    3. Hello everyone, My question is of a different nature. I have spent quite a while looking over Don Watson's web page. Thank you very much for the time and effort that has been put into such a wonderful resource, by the way. I have went to the Merged IGI on the Family History site for Europe, and while I get a couple of hits for the family names I enter, I do not get anyone remotely close to my family. My question is this, Has the Mormon Church been able to film the majority of the records? And is there any way to seach out which churches were destroyed in the combined World Wars? I have families not only in the Hesse-Cassel region, but in the Alsace-Lorraine area, and then there is the family that just poped out of nowhere (I am kidding. There is a researcher I talk to that says our ancestors are not the ones that are lost, we are. Our ancestors are right were they were when they were alive.) Thanks for your time, Elena In US, Palentine, and Alsace-Lorriane: Hergenroether/Harkenrider, Holzinger, Kinder, Crum, Geeting/Guthing, Sonner/Sanner, Eberly, Ambrose, Mattias/Matthews In US: Eddingfield, Byrd, , Besser, Correll/Gorell, Douglass, Vail, Cartwright, McCorkle, Bevins, Ruddle, Cailey, Rodeheffer --------------------------------- Do you Yahoo!? 3. http://1911encyclopedia.org/ will get you to the home page of the 1911 encyclopedia. To quote from there: The LoveToKnow Free Online Encyclopedia is based on what many consider to be the best encyclopedia ever written: the eleventh edition of the Encyclopedia Britannica, first published in 1911. At a time when many encyclopedias have capsulated and condensed important knowledge, the 11th edition is generally much more in-depth and thorough on it's topics. It is not uncommon for our entries to be 5 to 10 times the length of other encyclopedias. As a research tool, this 11th edition is unparalleled - even today. LoveToKnow is in the process of updating and editing thousands of the entries, preserving the treasured entries that make it so unique, and adding entries on new relevant topics. We hope that you enjoy and learn from the LoveToKnow Free Online Encyclopedia and that it becomes one of your favorite places for reference information. It really is an unparalleled source for history. A word of caution, the articles have been scanned from the original and put through an optical character recognition program, and will contain spelling mistakes. This is not the fault of those who maintain the website. There is a link for each article, to an edit page, which I have used to correct such mistakes and submit the corrected page. If you find yourself using the site, help them out and submit a page or two of such corrections yourself. 3. Hi Lorri, You need to do a bit more research before you can find where your ancestor came from. You need to start with records in American to find her home town. Look at the records in the place where he applied for citizenship. These would include county records and church records. Also, look at club and fraternal records too. If that doesn't work, do the same for his relatives. You probably won't find him by looking at German records until you know the village or town where he lived. Hope this helps, Carol Elk Groove, CA -----Original Message----- From: David Rorer [mailto:drorer@fuse.net] Sent: Saturday, April 03, 2004 6:46 PM To: HESSE-L@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [HESSE] Hesse Cassel ELECTER is a misspelling of Elector. 2. My third gt. grandmother was Marie Magdalene Ilgen, daughter of Rev. Ludwig Albrecht Wilhelm and Anna Barbara (nee Kautz) Ilgen, born Oct. 12, 1787, in Friesburg, Salem Co., New Jersey, US. She married Jacob Bowers (Bauer) in Haines Township, Centre Co., Pennsylvania, in about 1803. Jacob and Marie moved to Hamilton Co., Ohio in 1804. They were of the Reformed Church. Hamilton Co. later was subdivided and this couple lived in that part called Montgomery Co., Ohio, near Germantown. Is this the Ilgen family of which you inquire? Earl Kisling, San Pablo, CA

    3. Hi! I am looking for further information on Johann (John) Gottlieb Ilgen, who was born in Hesse-Darmstadt around 1830. He may have had a brother named Wilhelm, but I am not completely sure. I believe he immigrated to the U.S. in the 1850s, but again I am not completely sure of this. Details on this individual have, so far, been sparse. If anyone knows anything or has any information about this man and/or his parents/family, please get in touch. Sincerely, Tanya Austin, TX

    1. [HESSE] Hutzel from Metzlos and Eckhardt from Salz
    2. Kay Fulfs Cayler
    3. I believe that my ancestor, Conrad Hutzel or Hotzel came from the village of Metzlos. Does anyone know if the records of that village have been filmed? If the records are not in Metzlos where would they be located? I also believe the wife of Conrad, Anna Elizabeth Eckhar(d)t came from the village of Salz. Are those records filmed and if not where are they found? Conrad was 36 years old when he and his wife came to the US in 1847. They left Germany with two daughters and a son. The son died before the ship reached New York. They went to Lee County, Illinois. They were members of the Evangelical Reformed Church. Conrad had a brother, John, who was already in Illinois. He may also have had a brother, Adam. Any help on these locations or this family would be appreciated.

    1. [HESSE] questions about getting married in 1823
    2. Hello All - I've recently got an 1823 marriage translated. It is from the village Niedergemünden, Kreis Alsfed. I have a few questions... 1. It said there was a legally drafted marriage contract. Is that normal? What does that mean? 2. The groom is listed as 28 years old, recent resident, councilman and blacksmith. What does recent resident and coucilman mean / imply? His father is listed as resident, coucilman and blacksmith as well. The father of the bride is listed as councilman and resident. 3. Is there a difference in Hesse between the surnames Schmitt and Schmidt? Thank you, Anita
