Records of the German Reformed Church of New York City from the 1760s and 1770s were published between 1995 and 1997 in the New York Genealogical and Biographical Record. The records show that Johannes Reissner was buried on 4 January 1765 at age 68. He and many other members of the congregation are recorded as natives of Hachenburg. The Family History Library has microfilmed the Reformed Church records of the town of Hachenburg, Hessen-Nassau. I checked them and did not find a record of baptism of Johannes Reissner in about 1697. Scanning the records, I didn't notice any Reissners. The Familienbuch had no entry for Reissner. Can Hachenburg refer to a larger area that covers a region within the Westerwald, not just the town of Hachenburg? If so, how can I identify the parish where the Reissner family lived? Thank you. My family came to New Orleans, LA, USA from Grand Duchy Hessen in 1849.I believe they were Protestant. I need help in trying to find a record of their birth. Where do I start? Jan in S.E. TX
Dear George, My husband's ancestor was Friedrich HALLSTEIN and he was born in Hoechst not Bad Koenig. He left Germany in the early 1850's and settled in Little Germany area of Manhattan. He was a baker probably bread according to what the family tells me. His wife survived him by several years and she died in New Jersey. Unfortunately, I have not found their marriage in Manhattan, but I located most of their children's births and marriages in the vital records. Friedrich's father left his family in Germany. He may have settled in Pennsylvania after arriving in the U.S. I seem to remember his name being Georg. KarlaGet more from the Web. FREE MSN Explorer download : http://explorermsn.com

To Ernestine - I have a Johan Peter Rummel, but he was born in 1741. I don't have any Seitz in my data base. Do you know who your Johan Peter's father was or do you have any other Rummel names from the early 1700's. Maybe we can find a match there. To Karla - I also have a lot of Hallstein ancestors. They are from Hochst and Hetschbach. I also have a lot of other ancestors from Langen Brombach. Who were your husband's Hallstein ancestors? Hello, Is there someone who could look-up addresses of DAMER families living today around the area of Willofs (Lauterbach) near Schlitz and Fulda, Germany? I would like to write to some DAMER families of Germany. I have finally found my relative who was spelled her name DOMER once immigrating to the US. Now that I have finally located her birth record as Elisabetha DAMER of Willofs, I would like to see if anyone in Germany today has the genealogy of their DAMER family going back to the 1800s. Thank you for any help. Margaret in Maryland, USA Searching WEIPPERT, DAMER of HESSE-DARMSTADT
I have Johan Adam Rummal born in 1744 in Hochst im Oldenwald, which is about 20 miles east of Darmstadt. I have his line and a lot of Rummels from that area dating back to 1600. Rummel is a common name in that area. If you have a specific name, I would be glad to look it up in my data base to see if I have anything on it. I know when I was researching various collateral lines, I ran across the Rummal name from a lot of villages in the Hochst area. By the way, I looked for the village of Koenig on the map and couldn't find it. What other villages is it near? georg

Some years ago, seeking data in Germany and knowing only the state, I wrote to the Staatsarchiv Darmstadt. I not only gave the name and birthdate of my ancestor from Hessen but also the data for the girl whom he married in St. Louis, even though, because of her fairly common surname, I had no hope. I was fortunate: The archivist was familiar with my ancestor's family! But the miracle was that he was able also to identify the family of the girl my great-grandfather married in St. Louis! Please forgive me if I do not post to the Hesse list properly. This is my first attempt. I am most interested in the post below which was written by Jerome Dittman. My mother's maiden name is Dittman and we have been able to trace our ancestry back to Johann Heinrich Dittman (or Detman) who came to the USA on the ship Crawford, which departed from Rotterdam in the year of 1773. This ship arrived at the Port of Philadelphia on Oct 25, 1773. I would like to find out more information about Johann, such as where he was born and his parents. He married Elizabeth Horn and one of their children was David Dittman (my G,G,G Grandfather). He is buried in Clarion County PA. Thanks for any information. City directories of the years after their arrival will tell you in which part of the city they resided. Then, if, you know their religion you can locate a near by church of that religion and check it's records. The baptismal records of their children may give the town from which the parents emigrated from. From that you can go on to the area in Hesse where the town is/was located and search for the records there. That is the procedure that I used in locating the birth place, which were in Hesse and Hannover, of both sets of my German born great grandparents. Jerry Dittman Boonsboro, MD
