Hello, I am looking for information on Louis Peter Spies and Elisabeth Catharina Engelhardt. Louis came from Hessen (or Hesse) Darmstadt, Germany when he was about one. Louis was born 13 November 1848. Elizabeth Catharina was born in Rock Run, Stephenson County, Illinois but her father father George "Peter" Engelhardt came from Erbach, Odenwald, Starkenberg, Hessen, Germany, 31 January 1848 aboard the ship "SWITZERLAND". Louis and Elizabeth Catharina settled in Cumberland, Cass County, Iowa. I am trying to connect Louis Peter Spies to Augustus Spies who also came from Hessen (or Hesse) Darmstadt, Germany in 1850 He lived in Wisconsin and later settled in Menominee, Michigan. Augustus was married to Gertrude Prince (PRINTZ) I have the Immigration Lists: New York, 1820-1850 and found Augustus Spies whole family, but I have not found Louis Spies. I will be looking forward to hearing from someone with a connection to these names. Thank you, Cheryl Morales
Dear Sue, I could do a lookup for you in the books on emigration from the Odenwald to determine, if your people are from that area. Karla Nurnberg P.S. I live near the Family History Library contact me and I might be able to help you with your search. Get more from the Web. FREE MSN Explorer download : http://explorer.msn.com
O my God, this mail adress must be more than 7 years old :) Heinz L. Zulauf <heinz.zulauf@rhein;main.net> Don't use it any more. Heinz
Would anyone on the list know if this town of BISCHWEILER,HESSEN might be dialect of the region or what? Have a namesake in INDIANA who's people settled there and said, this is the Hesse town they are from. GAHN is the family name. Thanks Doris .
"Heefursteen" is most likely a misspelling of Kurfurstentum (with an umlaut over the first "u") The prefix "Kur" indicates that the prince was one of the "electoral princes" who elected the Holy Roman Emperor "furstentum" translates into English as "principality" There were two ways of referring to Electoral Hesse: as "Kurhessen" or as "Kurfurstentum Hessen" The initial "K" in the word must look like an "H" while the initial "u" like a pair of "ee"s a not uncommon problem David Rorer ----- Original Message ----- From: "Trent Eyler" <eyler@cox.net> To: <HESSE-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Friday, April 30, 2004 10:53 AM Subject: [HESSE] Kurfuerstentum Hessen;Kassel or Kurhessen or Heefursteen > Horst, > > > > > The term "Kurhessen" always referred to what was the > > "Kurfuerstentum Hessen;Kassel (Cassel)" until 1866. > > > > Thank you very much for sharing the information about Kurhessen. > > When I was at the National Archives, I got a copy of the enlistment > papers for my GGGF, Peter Euler, for his service in our Civil War. Andrea, I found this in the internet and I think it could help you Horst Rosenstock in Germany HESSIAN history in short words Until 1866 the term "Hessen" always referred to what became "Hessen Darmstadt" later. Hessen Darmstadt used to be a "Freistaat" (Free State) of the German Empire with a "Grossherzog"(Grand Duke) at the top. It was never a "Grossherzogtum". The term "Kurhessen" always referred to what was the "Kurfuerstentum Hessen;Kassel (Cassel)" until 1866. In other words: For most of the time which is important for your genealogical research, there's either Hessen Darmstadt (or Hessen) or Hessen;Kassel (or Kurhessen). The other state which you can find from time to time is "Hessen Nassau". It was founded in after 1866 as a province of Preussen (Prussia). It's main parts were Hessen Darmstadt, Hessen;Kassel, Nassau, parts of Bavaria, the city of Frankfurt and other regions. In other words again: Hessen Nassau never existed at the same time as Hessen Darmstadt and Hessen;Kassel. This does not mean, that the old terms ceased to exist in the "language of the people". Horst, > > The term "Kurhessen" always referred to what was the > "Kurfuerstentum Hessen;Kassel (Cassel)" until 1866. > Thank you very much for sharing the information about Kurhessen. When I was at the National Archives, I got a copy of the enlistment papers for my GGGF, Peter Euler, for his service in our Civil War. One of these was a copy of his Volunteer Enlistment document from 1863. At that time, he said that he was born in Heefursteen, Germany. I have not been able to find such a city in present day Germany, nor do I get any hits when I do a web search on Heefursteen. Obviously, I could be misreading the script, but it does *look* like Heefursteen. Is it possible that what looks like Heefursteen was actually a misspelling or alternate spelling for Kurhessen or Kurfuerstentum? Any of you kind German researchers know what/where Heefursteen, Germany, from 1860, is today? Or what looks like "Heefursteen" might have actually been? Thanks for any insight any of you can provide on this question, Trent Eyler <eyler@cox.net>
Virginia Gross: "It has been suggested, at the German desk in Salt Lake City, that I contact the Archives in Kassel." You can email in English, address below; Herr Bansmann will reply in German. You need to send them the information you have about your grandmother. He will research her parents and ancestry. He will do 2 hours of work at a time for about $50-$75, then tell you the number of photocopies he has found and the cost for the photocopies, etc. For payment I suggest you get a check in German Euros for the amount from International Currency Express Inc. to save the check cashing fee. You can pay with a credit card: www.foreignmoney.com 310.278.6628 You will receive the photocopies with a the information hand copied (not translated); caution, Herr Bansmann does not copy out all the information. (My objective is to determine the truth about my grandmother's parentage). Her name was Amelia Hoene - born April 09, 1882 in Oberhone, D - 37269 Eschwege, Germany. I have probably exhausted the Family History Library resources looking for her. I have everything from the day she entered the USA, at the age of two, except for her true parentage. It has been suggested, at the German desk in Salt Lake City, that I contact the Archives in Kassel. Does anyone on this list have an address for these archives? Thank you..Virginia Gross

Über FamilySearch habe ich zwei IGI-Datensätze, die im Vergleich zueinander Zweifel aufkommen lassen können, ob es sich um eine und dieselbe Person handelt. Entweder ist die 1. Dear Lister, Hachenburg is an area. A area search of the various parishes in that area will probably turn up the records of your ancestor. KarlaGet more from the Web. FREE MSN Explorer download : http://explorermsn.com

I've tracked my ancester through Census records and have found that PETER HAHN and his wife KATHERINE ZIMMERMAN came from Hesse-Darmstadt. He was born in 1840 and she in 1846. I have located a map of the Hesse Darmstadt area of Germany from that time, now what is my next procedure to locate where they were from? They were Protestant, so do I search each town in Darmstadt? And how does one go about that from the USA? Thanks for advice and input. Karen Farr, Shiloh Ohio
