Hartman could be a family member, but you do not know which one. The second male child might be the one named after the mother¹s father. You do not know if that child died and they tried again to name a child after the grandfather or they were down to naming after other relatives, such as a favorite brother. Hartmann could just be someone in the family that had the name they wanted to give the child and not for whom the child was named. He may have been named after the same person. Jay -- Jay E. Frank

So Geinsheim, Gross-Gerau, Hesse, Germany. That would be for present day. ~Brian ----- Original Message ----- From: Phil Stevens <joe2phil@nwlink.com> To: <HESSE-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Fri, 21 May 2004 14:53:04 -0700 Subject: Re: [HESSE] Need help with town location < Yes , I found then too , But what is the Location discription ? 1. In search of Burgschwalbach history
    2. Michelle Stone
    3. Hi, Listers, I am trying to find a book in German: _600-Jahrfeier der Gemeinde Burgschwalbach_ by Hermann Bauer, 88 pages [Gemeinderverwaltung], 1968, ISBN B0000BPN02. It is featured on both the English and German versions of Amazon.com, but seems to be out of print. I cannot find it (or any other pertinent books) listed in the Library of Congress or the FamilySearch.org online catalogs. Do you have any ideas of how I might obtain a copy of this book (or photocopy of its pages)? Perhaps by writing (sending money?) to a library in Burgschwalbach or Diez or Limburg (any addresses or experience with how to handle this?) I can't seem to find the addresses of any libraries by city in Germany by searching the web...but then I don't read much German (yet). I have found that my DEMARE ancestor's extended family lived at Oberhäusserhof near Burgschwalbach in what was then Nassau. The Protestants among them are listed in church books of Burgschwalbach and the Catholic ones were recorded at Daisbach. Other towns in the area are Aarbergen, Panrod, and the bigger cities farther away are Dietz and Limburg. I am trying to find out all I can about the history of that specific small rural area centered on Burgschwalbach and would especially want to find info on the Oberhäusserhof and its history, if any exists. Any advice, please? Michelle Stone Marietta, Georgia, USA

    3. Nancy: There never was a duke of Hope Capel As I said in my previous message, you are misreading the scharfes ess ( ß ) as a "p" and the handwritten "e" as an "o." The hand written scharfes ess will extend below the line and can easily be mistaken for a "p" If you substitute the letters you will see that what was written was actually Hesse Cassel it was not translated. Take some time to learn how words in German were spelled and listen to the advice of those who know better! 3. At this time Fulda was part of the Grand Duchy of Frankfurt a short lived state set up by Napoleon. To background yourself on this period I suggest you read: "With Eagles to Glory, Napoleon and his German Allies in the 1809 Campaign" by John H. Gill "La Grande Armee" by Georges Blond (Translated by Marshall May) Eagles provides background on all the German states allied with Napoleon, their armies and where these units served in the 1809 campaign. Grande is a history of the "Grande Armee" and its disasterous campaign in Russia. For specifics on the military units see "Armies of Germany and The confederations of the Rhine 1792-1815" Volume 1, which covers Anhalt, Frankfurt, Nassau, Hesse-Darmstadt, Mecklenburg and the Saxon Ducal Houses. It is published by George F. Nafzinger and is available directly from him. G.F. Nafzinger, P.O. Box 1522, West Chester, Ohio 45069-1522 Accordig Nafzinger the Frankfurt Regiment became the 3rd Rheinbund Regiment which never advanced farther than Danzig. It's possible the person writing out the Nat cert. that that is how he heard it, but on every other paper I have it says this realitive is from Hesse Darmstadt, so how that translate to Hope Capel is odd. Perhaps I'll get out my hystery books and see if there ever was a Duke of such place for the time. Thanks again Nancy

    1. Re: [HESSE] Geography question / also Hesse military early 1700s / other stuff
    2. Norman Nicol
    3. Hello Brian, Dillenburg was originally the seat of one of the divisions of the ruling dynasty of the counts of Nassau. Nassau-Dillenburg was established in the 13th century and passed to Nassau-Dietz upon the extinction of that line in 1739. Eventually, all of the Nassau possessions were reunited under a single ruler. Your earliest known ancestor married in 1710 would have done so in Nassau-Dillenburg, but the territory probably would have been called Nassau-Dietz by the time he died. As for military service, if one wished to follow such a calling and his own small state did not have a regular standing army, there was no prohibition from going to a neighboring state and offering his services there. On the other hand, he may have been from Hessen-Darmstadt and married a young lady from Dillenburg in her home parish church. He may not have been from Dillenburg himself and could have been a native-born Hessian. As for people going from one place to another, i.e. from near Heilbronn to Dillenburg, the answer is yes. The straight-line distance between the two places is only about 185 km or 110 miles. People traveled greater distances all the time in the 17th and 18th centuries, usually walking the entire way. It was not unusual for people to walk from Frankfurt to Paris for example, especially if they were merchants or craftsmen. We have a different mode of thinking today and most people won't even walk a quarter of a mile to a store! Our ancestors were undaunted by distance, otherwise, they never would have made the long ocean voyage to settle in a new land. Doug Nicol -- Norman D. 3. OK, that sounds logical, because part of today's state of Rhineland-Pfalz was once part of the Grand Duchy of Hesse Darmstadt. After 1866 when Hesse-Kassell or Kurhessen was incorporated into Prussia, Hesse-Darmstadt was usually referred to simply as the Duchy or Grand Duchy of Hesse (Grossherzogtum Hessen in German) I have an article titled "Grand-Duchy of Hesse after Napoleon" which describes the geographical layout of the Duchy and includes a small map. It is in word for windows format and I usually send it as a zip file. If your ISP will allow you to receive attachments and you can open zip files, let me know and I will send it to you direct.
