The German Reformed Church in New York City was established in 1758 and translations of its records from 1759 to 1776 have been published in The New York Genealogical and Biographical Record. This entry appears in the NYGBR, vol. 128, no. 3 (July 1997), p. 164: 1765. Jan. 4 Buried Johannes Reissner, native of Kragenburg. Note. Age 68. Other church members are described as natives of Hagenburg, Haagenburg, Haagenberg, Hagueburg or "Staugenburg in Hesse." Apparently they all refer to the region of Hachenburg, formerly within the borders of Hesse-Nassau and today part of the Rhineland-Palatinate in west-central Germany. A check of the Reformed church records of the town of Hachenburg on Family History Library microfilm 1,340,481 didn't turn up anything on the Reissner or Reisner family in the eighteenth century. How can I identify the town in the Hachenburg region where Johannes Reissner was born in about 1697? Several books have been published on emigrants from the Westerwald. Are they the best place to start? Thanks for any suggestions. Rick Crume Glyndon, Minnesota
Using the Jewish Shetl Seeker http://www.jewishgen.org/ShtetlSeeker/loctown.htm I found a Kunzenbach located 2.5 mi ESE of Weinheim at 49.32, 8.43. It is near a Gorxheim and there is a Lohrbach to the east. Looks like they might have used a church in Birkenau or Weinheim, both about equal distance. I have 2 films out for Evangelical churches in Weinheim and I can check for Kohls next time I go over to the FHC. Do you know of they were Protestant? Peter Kohl came from Goetzel, and I have letters from his children that have been translated and passed down to me. The translator said that it was probably absorbed by Weinheim, but I'd like to be sure...and since Goetzel was in Hesse Darmstadt and Weinheim was in Baden, I'm not quite sure where to start my research. It is above Goreheim, a hundred steps from the street above the valley between our place (Goetzel) and Weinheim." Any help is appreciated! Can anyone tell me if this is the right list for information about Lippe-Detmold, Schaumburg-Lippe and Braunschweig? I am trying to find out where my gr, gr, grandfather, Johann Adam Scheller and his wife Dorothea Eva Goring emigrated from somewhere between 1826 and 1847. Adam (he dropped the name Johann) became a citizen in 1852. On his Naturalization papers he is listed as coming from the Kingdom of Bavaria. If this is the wrong list for me to be on, can anyone tell me the right list? Thank you in advance for any help you might be able to give. Ray Scheller
Dear Armin Gumerman, I also would love a copy of that article on Hesse Darmstadt in the period after the Napoleonic Wars when you have time. Thank you so much. Hi David, Thank you for the wedsite and information Would you kindly send a copy of your article and map. Thank you very much, Wendy From: David Rorer [mailto:drorer@fuse.net] Sent: Sunday, June 13, 2004 10:26 PM To: HESSE-L@rootsweb.com Subject: [HESSE] Maps of Germany There has been a lot of interest in my article and map. A very good source of accurate historical maps will be found at the website below. http://www.ieg-maps.uni-mainz.de/enter.htm The site is in German, however, very basic German and not hard to follow. If you click on the link under the map displayed it will open up a larger image. The adobe acrobat icon will download a map in that format. All the images can be downloaded to your computer. I recommend printing them on card stock with a color printer, they are quite nice that way. The site is maintained by the University of Mainz and new maps are added periodically. If you cannot find exactly what you are looking for keep going back. I recommend to all that you bookmark the site and pass this information on to whatever other newsgroups you belong to. David Rorer
