    1. Starkenburg records, Hessen-Darmstadt

The VOLK family came from Ober Kinzig and the SEIFERT family came from Erbach." My ancestors emigrated from Erbach also. This is Erbach in Odenwald in Kries Erbach. Using www.familysearch.com LDS Family History Library, enter Erbach, Hessen. From the list given, select Erbach, Kries Erbach. Topic Germany, Hessen, Erbach (KrSt. Erbach) - Church records Titles Kirchenbuch, 1600-1875 Evangelische Kirche Erbach (KrSt. Erbach) Kirchenbuchduplikat, 1808-1847 Evangelische Kirche Erbach (KrSt. Erbach) Kirchenbuchduplikat, 1836-1875 Katholische Kirche Erbach (KrSt. Erbach) I used the Church Book, Kirchenbuch 1600-1875 and found all of them in films including Baptisms, Marriages, Confirmations & Deaths. If your family was Catholic, then you have a smaller range of years, but still within the range you are looking for. Good Luck. Carolyn

    1. VOELPEL > 1849-51 USA
    2. Bart Hansen
    3. Hello list - I have just joined because the ladies at Genealogus Hamburg informed me that my gr-gr-grandfather most probably came from Hesse-Nassau. His name was Christian VOELPEL. The only documents I had were his naturalization papers signed in 1851 and 1854. In them he renounced the "Grand Duke of Mapan". For years I wondered what Mapan was, and they have determined it to be Nassau. It is in cursive writing and the last letter I now see as a u and the first an n. So, being new to all this, I ask where I should go next? His surname, VOELPEL, I understand should be VÖLPEL. I don't believe that name is overly common. I see just this morning that Paul Miller has posted some e-mail addresses. Can I assume they will deal with posts in English? The first of the naturalization papers was completed in November of 1851. Do folks feel that therefore he arrived in the US prior to that year? I understand there was a one year waiting period. This is a critical time, as the Hamburg records begin in 1851. Thanks very much, Bart Hansen in Virginia

I have quite a bit of information on the Seib family from Heubach, near Darmstadt but would be very interested in corresponding with others who are working on any of these lines. I am particularly interested in knowing if anyone from the Winter family immigrated to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania in the late 1800's. Thank you for any help you can offer. Patricia Martin Kennedy

Dear Peter: I have no firm information we are related, however, I am descended from a line of PETRI's that lived in Egelsbach, Hesse, in the late 1800's. Gross Bieberau is quite close to Egelsbach, and I believe I have traced at least one uncle (surname GAYDOUL) to Gross Bieberau. 3. Peter, I have worked with the microfilms of the Protestant church records from Gross Bieberau and I dont recall ever seeing the name Petri but that was not one of the names I was looking for. I know that I did see several surnames that are also given names and I may have seen Peter as a surname. Also, I mostly worked with the records for the 1800's. The handwritting in the 1700's is really hard to read. The family book for about 1805-1850 has been filmed and is a valuable tool if you can trace down that far. The surnames that I researched were Bixler/Buexler/Buechsler, Krichbaum, Hartmann, Rettig, Vetter, Elbert, Kaffenberger, Lautenschlaeger, Beilstein, Steinmetz and Schwoebel. I've been in touch with several other distant cousins who are researching these names in the Odenwald area. I've got a tree on WorldConnect named Bode_Bixler and would be happy to share info with you if you find overlaps later. For example, if the address ends in .COM, the virus's email body will appear in English. If the address ends in .DE, the email will appear in German.
