When Jacob Ehresmann came to the USA he gave his citizenship as "Kingdom of Hesse". The place of birth for his daughter Katherine Ehresmann recorded in the Gingrich family Bible after she married John Gingrich II is "Neuhausen bie Worms" (if we are reading it correctly). This appears to be an administrative district rather than a town. Is this correct? Was this area under the control of the Dukes of Hess in 1834? Or was Jacob's citizenship different from that of his daughter's birthplace? We had thought Katharine was born in Mannheim, although the exact source of this information is unclear. Is this simply incorrect? Or is there some administrative explanation? Maybe when asked in later life, she just gave the name of the nearest large city that she remembered? I am trying to locate anyone researching the Winter family in Hesse Darmstadt. The family I am interested in is that of Peter and Fredericka Bauer Winter who immigrated to the United States in the mid 1800's. They lived in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania where Peter was a barber. They had several children one of whom was Emil Winter a prominent Pittsburgh banker and steel manufacturer. Any help on the Winter or Bauer families in Hesse Darmstadt would be greatly appreciated. An ancestor's gravestone in Hesse that died in 1677 was born in Grossen Allen Rotha in Hesse. As I understand the language, the name doesn't sound correct - I would have expected something along the lines of Grossen an der Rotha, or Gross Allen, Rotha. Does anyone know of a Rotha in Hesse? In 1800-1810 the area of Germany west of the Rhine River was annexed to the French Empire. All records were kept in French etc. After the French were forced out of the area in 1812-14 the area came under German occupation then was reorganized as part of several German states. Good morning! I am looking for the Hesse-Darmstadt origin of my 2-great grandparents. There are a number of unknowns yet about this family. Year of emmigration is unknown and whether he married before or after emmigration is also unknown. There are a few people who lived in his area who might have been related or not. This is very frustrating and confusing and I know that with such little information that is known, there is not much chance in finding him or his ancestors. Any suggestions of where I might look further I would be grateful to have. John N. Koehler/Johannes N. Kohler (probably) was born 26 June, 1822 in Hesse Darmstadt he married (year and place unknown--before 1852) Verena B. Hopp born in Switzerland of German parents 9 December 1827 Probably he or they emmigrated between 1840 and 1852 and went to Detroit and then bought farmland in Sanilac County, Michigan. They were protestant. The first born child (that I know of) was John G. Koehler born 19 Aug 1853 in Detroit. I have more details on the US born children if anyone is interested but just to give an idea of the family names-they were in order of birth: John G. William A. Emma Friedrich Elizabeth Otto Clairibel In addition, there were 3 Koehlers old enough to be John N. Koehler's parents: Augusta Henry/Heinrich(?) Anna Names of the women are probably their married name--not birth names In addition, there are 3 Koehlers old enough to be brother and sister or maybe cousins of John N. Ko(e)hler Andrew W. born 1825 Barbara (who apparently remained single). There was also a Lewis/Louis Koehler--little is known about him. Any ideas where I might search further? One factor for oddities in the early 1800s could be the aftermath of the French Revolution spreading turmoil into other states of Europe. As the French alternately conquered, allied, switched allies, replaced rulers of various areas, there WAS an effect on record keeping. In many areas which had not kept civil records, the practice was introduced by the French. I wrote for some records from Belheim (now Pfalz) on the Rhine river. The oldest one (1803 as I recall) was written in French. The later ones were in German (Napoleon having met his Waterloo) - But the same German name had signed all of them. So - Yes! Barbara I have a tenuous link to WENZEL, in that my ancestor Karl Edler married Catharina Völsing in Romrod (near Alsfeld, a bit west of Fulda) Hesse-Darmstadt on 13 Oct 1822. Catharina was a widow whose former husband was Peter Wenzel. This information is in the archives of the EV church in Romrod, along with other information on Peter Wenzel, an army bandsman.
