Hi - this word was translated for me as meaning surviving (daughter)[it's from a marriage record and lists as Anna, Johannes Schott's hinterlassene]. Too late, I realized I needed clarification. Does it mean that Johannes was dead by the time of the marriage? Or, does it mean that Anna is the only daughter of Johannes who survived to adulthood? Thanks, Anita

On my ancester Conrad Shafer/Shaffer/Schaffer death certificate are his parents names John Shafer and Mary DREUTER. It was hand written so I may be interpreting Dreuter wrong, maybe it's Druter? It is assumed that the parents John & Mary did not immigrate to the US. Conrad is from Hesse-Cassel, Germany (village unknown at this time) Born May 1846 or 1847. He immigrated in 1864 at age 17-18 and settled in Huntingdon, PA. He died in 1907 where his parents names are written on death certificate. I'm finding this surname is not common so I though I'd take a stab in the region of origin. Andrea Welter

It is a matter of language. In English it is Hesse. Auf Deutsch es sind Hessen. Then there is Kassel/Cassel. The usage of the C instead of the K is more the Latin usage than the English usage, though in the 19th century the C was commonly used in English. Both forms of each word are correct. I have been working on the ROVER branch of my tree and wanted to post here so that if anyone was connected, they could contact me. There were 6 surviving ROVER sons, born from about 1860 - until the late 1870's. They were Friedrich, Nikolaus, Hinrich, Johann Heinrich, Diedrich, and Martin. The 3 eldest remained in Germany and the 3 youngest emigrated to America to the New York city area, one by one, starting in the mid 1880's. I do not know if there were any others who preceded them as the first set sail for America at age 16, alone without family. I have found a record of a Hermann ROVER from Kuhstedt who came to America earlier than john, but so far I do not know anything about him. I have established contact with some relatives in Germany that arte descendants of the 3 remaining brothers, I am glad to say, but have not as yet delved into German records. When I look for my ancestor, Christian VOELPEL (VÖLPEL) in the IGI for Germany, I get several hits naming a place in Hesse called Mehrnberg. Unfortunately, they are all member-submitted entries. When I Google this name, it suggests that I really want Mehrenberg. Neither place is in my Oxford World Atlas, but one of the Google hits mentions Giessen, which I can find. Is Mehrenberg/Mehrnberg a small place near Giessen? In VOELPEL's naturalization paper, he renounced the Duke of Nassau. I have no other information on his origins. Would it be worth my while to look in church books for Mehrenberg, or is this too slim a clue? Thanks, Bart
