Hello, Duane: Just out of curiosity, I searched at http://www.dastelefonbuch.de for Roth, and of course, it brought up too many hits, and then I put in Reiskirchen and got 23 hits. Have your researchers already discarded these possibilities? For sure, Roth is a fairly common name, but there are Roths in Reiskirchen. I don't know if any of these postal codes correspond to Hessen. If not, could he have been from Reiskirchen, but not Hessen?? Good luck! --- Duane/Rita Lamers <kglamers@yahoo.com> wrote: > Greetings from Michigan, USA! > > My ancestor is Eduard Roth. Greetings from Michigan, USA! My ancestor is Eduard Roth. He was 15 years old when he emigrated 17 October 1863 on the ship Germania which left from Hamburg for New York. He was not with parents. On the passenger list composed at Hamburg Roth said he was from Reiskirchen in Kurhessen. Researchers are not able to find a Roth family in any of the two towns named Reiskirchen which are located in the state of Hessen today. It is possible that Roth did not tell the truth about the name of the village he came from. This is my question: Do the archives at Hamburg for emigration give information about the people who are leaving? If the archives can be useful to me, I wish to learn the postal address and the email address so that I can write for information. Thank you for your help. I regret that I cannot write to you in the German language. Sincerely, Mr. Duane Lamers kglamers@yahoo.com --------------------------------- Do you Yahoo!? Meet the all-new My Yahoo! Try it today!

Betty, Thanks for your interest in helping others in the Storndorf area. My family SCHLITT, most likely of the Cathlolic faith, originated there probably in the late 1600's. From there they went to the Antrfftal area of Ruhlkirchen, formerly known as Katzenberg. Dorothy Dwb12345@aol.com
Betty, I am interested in your research as I have been seeking relatives in the Alsfeld/Romrod/Strebendorf/Ober Breidenbach area, an area very close and overlapping with the area you are researching. I visited Romrod in September and found marriage, baptisms and burial records of family members, dating 1822 to 1831. The surnames of interest to me are: EDLER HOELSCHER VöLSING (widow of Peter WENZEL. She married Carl Edler in 1822) HUMMEL I was unable to find a marriage (Frederich EDLER to Marie HOELSCHER) which took place in June 1845, so this may have been in Oberbreidenbach, Strebendorf, or other. Due to deaths of adults with young children in my records, I am also interested to learn if there were registers kept when the situation arose, and records of orphanages, and/or whether other family members cared for them. Also, for general background information, Herr Gerhard Bing, at the Romrod local government offices has published a book on the history of the area, "Heimatbuch Romrod", which gives a fascinating local history, and lists some family names including a Heinrich and Maria Roth. I would be very interested in learning of your findings. -- John Edler (Sydney Australia) ----- Original Message ----- From: "Betty Richardson" <bkrich@sbcglobal.net> To: <HESSE-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Saturday, November 20, 2004 06:51 Subject: [HESSE] Kehl, Roth, Rockel in Storndorf, Wallenrod, and Maar I am currently in Germany on a research trip. Hello Betty, How very kind of you to offer to look around for others! I am very interested in any ZULAUF family you come across in the areas you mention. I am specifically searching for the birthplace of my immigrant ancestor, Johannes Zulauf, born in 1753 according to computation from his gravestone. According to a note preserved from his youngest daughter, Johannes' father was Walter Zulauf, who was killed during the Seven Years War. Unfortunately, Zulauf is a fairly common name in that region of Germany. About ten years ago I thought I had my immigrant ancestor's family identified in Ober-breidenbach. I visited the Evangelical parish there and got information from the pastor about a Johannes Zulauf born in 1755. I used it for several years as hypothetical data until better information forced me to conclude that identification was not valid. The archives in Alsfeld were closed when I was in the area so I got nothing there. Am still looking and hoping for a lead to follow. Will be interested in hearing about any success you have in your own research there. Rev. Nelson R. Hello This is my first posting to this list and my first foray in to German genealogy. I see that other messages have been posted in English so I hope this is OK! In the 1871 English census my great great grandfather's brother, James CREASEY, is living in Netherfield, Sussex, with his wife, Mary (& some children). Mary's age is given as 41 and her place of birth as Wadzlar, Germany (she was a naturalised British subject). I have googled on Wadzlar and google suggested Wetzlar, which I believe is in the Hesse region. The couple probably married prior to 1863 (birth of first known child) and don't appear to be on freebmd as yet. If anyone come across a likely marriage I'd be very interested to know. When I find the marriage I will post back to the list with Mary's maiden name! Cheers Alex ___________________________________________________________ Moving house? Beach bar in Thailand? I am researching my Axer family ancestry. My family lived in the Albig, Armsheim, and Lonsheim, region in the 1700's and then some later in Kaiserslautern, Alzey, and Sarrbrucken. Because of the French invasion the Armsheim church records were destroyed. I do not know when they came to this region, but I think that it was after the thirty-year war. Their descendants may still be in the Rhineland-pfalz region. Some of my ancestors were Johann Friederich Axer, Johann Michael Axer, Johann Christian Axer, Hans Peter Axer, Johannes Axer, Anna Catherina Axer-Clonien, Anna Barbara Axer-Saeger, Anna Elisabetha Axer-Schmitt. Is there anyone who may have access to the Churchbooks of these places? Is anyone else researching this family? Other Variations are AXERS, ACKSER, AXTNER and AXEN. Any information would be of great help. Thank you, Rob Oxier rloxier@woh.rr.com
Seeking ancestral information for Johannn Christoph REINMUTH, b 12 Sept 1832 in the Brackenheim District, Massenbach, and his wife Amelia, (Emilie) b.1835. . Johann Christoph applied to immigrate to North America in 1854. Later, he is listed as a passenger on the Ship "Vandalia" which departed Havre de Grace for NYC. Arriving 24 Jul 1854, These GGGrandparents moved first to Virginia, and then to Chicago, Illinois, where they appear in 1860 US Census with daughter Anna. There are confusing details of a passage on the ship Hanra from Bremen, Germany to NYC arriving on 20 July 1863. The place of origin is listed as Glanchan for the three REINMUTH ladies. Possibly, Emilie went back and forth at about the time of Johann Christoph REINMUTH's death. The passenger list shows their infant daughter, Clara REINMUTH, aged 10/12 and Anna aged 5 years accompanying their mother. Emilie later married Phillip WOLF in Chicago, on 21 Sept 1876 Phillip WOLF was born in Germany in 1835. He was a shoemaker. We would very much appreciate any further details on the REINMUTH family prior to their immigration. Please send all responses to Douglas Roger Dexheimer, whistles73@earthlink.net and Karen Ann Filkey, a distant cousin, Lilly87cut@aol.com
In further searching and re-thinking possible phonetic spelling variations of what I see in the census in England, I believe the correct spelling of my ancestors town is: Dotzheim, Kreis Weisbaden, Nassau, Preussen Would this be the proper way two indicate the town as it was in 1834? Heinrich Wintermeyer, born 05 Aug 1834, son of Conrad Wintermeyer. England 1871 census gives his place of birth but it is very difficult to read. the town name is blurred and hard to read ... the first letter is either T or F followed by an "o" the last three letters are "ein or eim" spelling variations that I can "see" are: Tolslein Folslein Toltlein Foltlein This town would have been in existance in 1850 and was near Frankfurt am Main. Anyone have any ideas? I have searched various "townfinders" without luck. Regards, Al Rose Please visit my GEDCOM posted at URL: http://worldconnect.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?db=butchrose
Anita, I don't know the whole story in your case, but "-chen" (and possibly "-ken"?) is a diminuitive suffix in German, that is, "little" or "young". It has been used both as a given name suffix and as a surname suffix. Since you found Bergken associated with baptism records only, I would guess that the suffix might have been added in those cases as an affectionate reference to denote a "little Berg". That would explain dropping the suffix as the child became older. The "-and" is another name suffix, whose meaning is unclear to me. David Uhrick
