    2. Vielleicht hilft dies jemand.

    3. Hi Listers, I am relisting my enquiry for the forebears of Hans Jacob PETRI or PETERSEN, born in Denmark C 1620. Described as "Sauhirt aus Danemark ( I think "swineherd from Denmark"). No Idea where he was born however he is noted as marrying Martha "unknown" in 1653, probably in Hesse Germany, and dieing in Reinheim in 1656. They had at least one child Hans Caspar PETRI born 15/05/1653 possibly in Reinheim. Hans Caspar married Anna Barbara BADER in Groß-Bieberau 04/02/1673. She had been born in Groß-Bieberau C 1658. They had at least one child Johann Heinrich PETRI born C 1672 in Ueberau and died 15/03/1744 in Ueberau. Johann married Elisabetha Barbara "unknown" in 1700. She had been born in Ueberau C 1677. They had at least one child Eva PETRI born C 1712 Eva married Johan Adam HOTTES 1744 in Groß-Zimmern I know that pre 1620 is a long time ago and that wars and the Reformation have played havoc with whatever records there were, but any assitance will be very much appreciated. Cheers Peter Strauss Melbourne Australia

    3. John, The question was about confirmation, which is a distinct rite in which infant baptism is reaffirmed as a person becomes an adult member of the church. Confirmation is a stage in becoming a church member that is used only by those churches that practice infant baptism. These churches maintain two rolls of membership: they count "baptized membership" as distinct from "confirmed membership." The groups you are thinking about did not practice infant baptism, therefore they had no confirmation rite. Their singular membership became effective at the time of their adult baptism. Rev. 3. Alan & the List- I held off replying to your query in the hopes that others would do so. The Rev. Suloff has done this and I would second his comment. Most males and females were confirmed at 13 with the occasional male slipping to 14. There clearly were exceptions in western Germany 50 or so years earlier than your dates due to warfare and French occupations but by 1854 out and out foreign invasion was not an issue and all three Churches: Roman Catholic, Reformed (Calvinist) and Lutheran generally confirmed at 13. 3. Hi Ed I wish you and all members of this list a happy new year! It is funny for which small villages you are looking for. Rebsborf belongs now to the town of Steinau an der Straße. You find it on the map in the middle of the triangle Birstein - Steinau - Freiensteinau. It belonged to Hessen Kassel Rebsdorf had 10 houses with 72 inhabitants in 1895 Nösberts belongs now to the town of Grebenhain. It is some km north of Freiensteinau and it belonged to Hessen-Darmstadt, province Oberhessen. Also Nösberts-where is it? I am entering data for completion of a book on the Schilling's from Niederdünzebach, Eschwege, Fulda, Hünfeld, Heyerode. Searched the web for these 2 places without luck. Probably they are in either Hessen-Cassel, Hessen-Nassau or Hessen-Darmstadt Edmund Hessian Grenadier at: http://members.tripod.com/~Silvie/Schilling.html ==== HESSE Mailing List ==== Many towns in Germany have the same name! 3. Would anyone know of a town in Hesse that was known as Gellhausen? I've had someone give me an alternate spelling of Geilhausen but I would like to make sure that the spelling on my great great grandfathers grave marker could have been worn by the weather or maybe such a town did or did not exist. Thank you for your help. Marie Van Laeys
