    3. The City archive of Battenberg can be found in the HStAM (Hessisches Staatsarchiv Marburg), Section 330 Battenberg. Most hits in HADIS for "Battenfeld", however, may be found in section 180 Biedenkopf. These are mainly refering to the town of Battenfeld. I suggest you try using the search function with more significant key words within the HStAM section. Good luck and regards, Thierry   Dr. Thierry P. 1. [HESSE] Apprenticeships in the city of Cassell
    2. Folks, I have learned recently from a short biography of my great-grandfather, Charles C. Fredigke (b. 1839), published in the 1896 history of Chicago, that he was a druggist's apprentice in Cassell prior to moving to Chicago with his family in August 1857. Do apprenticeship records for the 1850s still exist for Cassell? This same bio notes that his father, Michael Fredigke (b. 1807), was a master shoemaker in Cassell. This fact seems confirmed by the 1849 Cassell business directory which lists Michael. Did guilds exist for shoemakers and do records survive for such guilds? If Michael was an apprenticed shoemaker would there be apprenticeship records for the 1820s? Jim Otton Lakewood, Colorado **************Check all of your email inboxes from anywhere on the web. 3. Doris, I have traced 14+ Stephan Families into the US - it appears they all came in through New York, settled in Penns, Ohio, Missouri, Wisconsin, Michigan, Kansas, Iowa, Kentucky just to Name a Few. All Descended from one Johan Philip Stephan b1681 in Lamperthiem. I have traced my Stephan Family back to a Claus Stephan (nicolaus) b1566 in Diersheim , Offenberg, Baden-Wuerttenberg lived near Heppenheim (apparently near the Starkenburg Castle). He had 9 Children - 3 sons which I've been able to trace, One of which is my ancestor - Nicholas Michael Stephan b1598 - he moved to Lampertheim - had 6 son's. My line being Hans B Stephan b1624 in Heppenheim. No Doubt I have In-numerable Stephan Relatives from just those 9 male Stephan's, not to mention the Daughters. I have not tried to trace The sibling families of Johan Philip Stephan b1681 though he had 6 brothers & 6 sisters. At this generation there are a minimum of 30 Stephan Families by the Year 1700 as Claus of 1566 had 2 sisters that I know of. Boggles the Mind. Anyone Familiar with any of these Families - let me know? Doris - what Family names are you tracing ? 3. It all depends on what the researcher is looking for. Are we concerned with proper use of the language or should we be concerned with how the language is used and can we learn anything about the person who used it. Does it tell us anything about the area he is from or his education level. Since this is appearing in a newspaper, it is difficult to say who actually wrote the text. But I should think that if the editor wrote it, he would want to make certain that the message was understand by the readers and that he was using "their language". A saddler who used language normally associated with the highly educated may not get much business. Sometimes it pays to throw in a few errors. Thanks to everyone who contributed JK Gisela E. G.
