    3. I was reviewing some of my records from Bensheim, Hesse. I noticed in baptisms 1863 - 1869 the priest is Johannes Stumpf. Sometime later this weekend I will review some of the earlier records and see there are any baptisms for that name. 3. Hi Kathleen. I have never heard or seen the name "DEAO" before. Further, there is no single occurrence of this name today, all over Germany in GeoGen. Finally, the spelling is absolutely untypical for German. Would it be possible to see a historical German document with that name?  May be I can deciffer what the German spelling has been?  The spelling may have changed after emigration to the U.S. as in so many other cases. It looked right to me. What I hope to do next is find this person after his christening. Parents? siblings? emigration? I first found the Deao name in 1850 in Illinois, but Eli Deao was born in 1824 in NY. 3. Hello, Thierry Thanks for taking the time to help. I agree, Deao doesn't sound German. The first place I saw a reference to Germany was on the 1880 census for Eli Deao [who was born 1824 in N.Y.], which listed his father's place of birth as Germany. When I later saw the Deao baptism record, I assumed that Germany must be correct, and I've tried to make a bridge between the two. But I can't find Joannes in Germany or the U.S., and I can't find Eli Deao before 1850 in Illinois. Joannes would be too young to be Eli's father, but it's the ONLY crumb I have. >From FamilySearch.com: JOANNES DEAO - Christened - 17 FEB 1809 Dom Katholisch, Mainz, Rheinhessen, Hessen There are many Deyo families in the U.S., mostly descended from French Heugenots who were in America for years before Eli would have there. But regardless, none of them have an Eli, Elijah, Elias, etc. born about that time. I have researched the neighbors of Eli in Illinois, as well as the family of his wife, Mary Ann Simmerman [in case he married a cousin]. I've corresponded with the LeDoux family, and tried to find other names with similar "shape" or soundex. The other Deao family branch in the U.S. [we can't find a common ancestor] believe their family may have been Slovak or Polish and they know their ancestors used different spellings such as Dija, Deyo, Dio, etc. So . . . I'm not sure what to do next, and am considering any and all suggestions! Many thanks - Kathleen

    3. They were all born before the marriage but I don't think that is conclusive. In 1900 Margaretha indicates she had given birth to 3 children and all three are still living. It is likely she is not the mother but I can't seem to find anything about her children or his. It is possible that she married in Bensheim. I have not reveiwed all those marriages yet. The records for Bensheim only go up to 1875 so there's no assurance she will be there, but I will order that film anyway. My family didn't dome to the US until 1882 and if Margaretha was married at the time, I have know way of knowing what her married name was. I only discovered who Margaretha was yesterday and I guess I was looking for a short cut. 3. Don't have a Phillip but I have a Sebastian Stumpf emigrated from Zella in 1870 but his parents are Johannes & Elisabeth (Keller) Have lots of others but none with your names. Seems to be very popular name in Alsfeld/Grebenau area as well as the Ziegenhain area further south. I have about 25-40 spread amongst quite a few towns and those are just the legal emigrants. 3. Dear Nancy, I am definitely not descending of your Stumpf in NYC, but I do have that name in my AL indeed and we may have the same ancestors.
