    3. Mapquest shows Innenstadt as a small suburb of Frankfurt just like Westend & Altstadt. David Kemle ----- Original Message ----- From: Steve Frank<mailto:SFrank@woh.rr.com> To: HESSE@rootsweb.com<mailto:HESSE@rootsweb.com> Sent: Friday, October 01, 2010 5:19 AM Subject: [HESSE] Innisstaadt, Hesse-Darmstadt I am new to your mailing list. I am researching the family of Conrad WERNER or WARNER, born Abt. 1820, and Martha STRACHT or STRACK, born Abt. 1825 in Innisstaadt, Hesse-Darmstadt. They had a daughter, Helena, also born in Germany on January 16, 1848. When I use my Germany Atlas, I find Immenstaad near Lake Konstanz and Immenstadt also in Southern Germany. I have also found Innenstadt or Inner City area of Frankfurt on a Google Search. In Germany, does each major city have their own Innenstadt, or does Innenstadt only refer to the Frankfurt area? I would appreciate any guidance from the group on where to be searching for this family. Thank you. Anyway, I'm looking for the birthplace of Philip RIEHL and/or Mary SCHAEFER both born about 1854 in Hesse-Darmstadt. This is the location listed in both the census data and the LDS files. Their children were Louis, Charlotte, Charles and Caroline. Thanks, Narda

    2. There was a message not long ago from jeffyleighton, which looked very much like a hacked account. I hope you didn't click on the link. I'm not sure, if it was from a user account, or one that just got through. The point being if it looks like the internet equivalent of "processed ham pieces smashed together to make a single piece of pseudo-meat" made famous by a company in Minnesota (Ya, fer sure!), it's probably coming from a hacked account. Lack of a subject, or a strange subject (relative to the strange subjects of genealogists), it might be a hacked account. If it looks like an advertisement, it might be a hacked account. If it offers you millions for your bank account number, it might be a hacked account. etc. And wow! I didn't even know we had an administrator! He's so quiet. Here, I thought attachments just got dropped by the mailinglist software. 3. Hi all, if ever you see a reference to "Baden" (especially when a link to Switzerland is made), pls do consider the City of Baden located in the german speaking part of Switzerland, in the Kanton of Aargau, not far from Zürich. In former times Baden was an own Kanton and before that it has been a county, belonging to the Habsburgs. Also the city of Baden-Baden in former times was briefly referred to as "Baden". So this reference may not refer to the region (former Grand-Duchy) of Baden, but to a city of that name. The confession of your ancestors may help there. Most swiss-german are protestant, whereas the city of Baden and its surrounding was catholic! There were lots of emigrants from the swiss city of Baden beginning with the second decade of the 19th century. After Zürich, Bern and other protestant swiss cities have won the war against the city of Baden, it went through an economic drop, which led to the emigration. Also note the city of Baden was kind of the "Capital" of Switzerland (Tagsatzungsort) for quite a while, until after the war (I think 1812 it was). You'll find both cities, their history, etc. online in the internet. Cheers, Thierry

    3. I have a Born in my family tree: Maria Katarina Born who was born circa 1785 in Nonnenroth, Hesse-Darmstadt and died there on January 1, 1819. She was the daughter of Sebastian Born and Maria Raab. She married my ancestor Johann Heinrich Diegelmann on October 16, 1806 in Edelzell, Fulda, Hesse-Darmstadt. She had seven children with him, all in Edelzell, before her death in 1819. Maybe that will give you a lead. They were Catholic and the Catholic Archives in Fulda are very good. Good luck! 2. Switzerland and Baden share a common border. It would not have been unusual for a family to leave Germany by making a route through Switzerland, if permission to leave the country was not forthcoming. Although, it might be more unusual for a Hessian to take that route. My Swiss ancestors were "German" speaking and lived in the NE part of Switzerland, back in 1600-1700s. They migrated to Alsace, and some later to the US. This is as profound as I get on Mondays. 3. I just spoke to my last living uncle, and he told me that "Jacob Born was a Heugonot, a French Heretic, who betrayed his Roman Catholic faith. Even though all the censuses say "Baden" or "Germany" , my grandmother continually referred to him as their "Alsacian"grandfather. I know the borders were constantly changing during those times, and I don't even know if he spoke French or German, or (probably) both. I saw one census where he said he had come from "Deutschland". Maybe my uncle's memories could help narrow this down. Or maybe not! 3. You should try Ancestry.com. And if you don't want to pay, check if your local library carries it. I'm wondering if the last name could be a little different. I checked Castle Garden and only find one Con. Born in 1836. 3. Hello, I am new to this list. I am searching for a connection for my gg-grandfather, Jacob Born, (b 17 Oct 1828, d 1 Feb 1889) who according to some censuses came from Baden, and on his naturalization papers (1854) he stated Hesse-Darmstadt. He said he immigrated here in 1836, (but no ship OR port is listed) but there doesn't seem to be a Jacob Born coming into New Orleans during that year. (New Orleans was where he spent the remainder of his life) He married Wilhelmina Rice also in 1854 whose parents came from Baden. I need to check ALL other ports that had arrivals from Germany in 1836. It is very possible that his family came to the states and originally settled in Ohio, because that is where Wilhelmina was from, but I have no proof of this yet. Of interest, and thanks to some notes made by my Born grandmother, he went west to California out to the Goldrush. I was lucky enough to be able to find him in El Dorado County, in the Log Town Vicinity, in the 1850 Federal Census, with (presumably) his father, John Born, born about 1800. Nowhere else have I so far been able to come up with any other references about his father, so I can only imagine that he didn't survive the riggors of the goldrush life. But his name must have been Johannes or something other than just "John" when he crossed the pond. I don't have any more information than this......(although I have just sent for his obituary from New Orleans) and I am attempting to find some baptismal records for his 1st son, my great grandfather, Edward Augustus Born, born Aug 7, 1855 in New Orleans. Does anyone have any information that could help me in my search to find my ancestors across the pond? Many thanks in advance, Kathy Cochran

    1. [HESSE] Ippinghausen Muster Roll in 1777
    2. Michael Helmantoler
    3. Hello. I have been reading this list  for a year now and it is very helpful. Especially the last post aobut the difference between  a familienbuch (family book) and ortsfamilienbuch (OFB) or ortssippenbuch (OSB). Could anyone point me to a OFG,OSB for a Private Hellmenthal who was recruited in 1777 at Ippinghausen, Hesse to fight the Americans. I found him in HETRINA. but no record that the Lieb Regiment was deployed to America. Ippinghausen is near Wolfhagen and Naumburg for Evangelical Church records. It is currently situated in Kassel, Kassel, Hessen, Germany, its geographical coordinates are 51° 16' 0" North, 9° 9' 0" East. Danka, Michael Helmantoler
