It's very interesting that your grandfather and my grandmother were siblings. My wife and I traveled from our home SW of Hutchinson, KS to central MO in late September. We headquartered in Hermann, MO for three days, while we explored the Hensley connections in the area. We located Clifton's (and Adaline's) graves east of Columbia in an old church cemetery. The inscriptions were badly weathered, but it appeared that Clifton's incription noted his place of birth as Albemarle Co., VA. This seems to tie him to the family of William Benjamin Hensley, who would have been his grandfather. Clifton's father, William, would have been the oldest son of the marriage between Elizabeth Appleberry and William Benjamin Hensley. They moved to the area of Kanawha, VA (became WV in 1863) around 1800. There is some indication that Wm. B. fought in the battle of Pleasant Ridge in the Revolutionary War (so he saw this frontier country), and asked for his land "! bounty" for service in this area. You probably have the story, but four of his sons emmigrated to MO in 1826. They ended up in Jefferson Co. south of St. Louis (around Hillsboro, MO). We found two of the brothers' graves in Sandy Baptist Church cemetery, along with several dozen other Hensleys. One of the other brothers lived in the St. Louis area (Thomas). William (Clifton's father - we think) is not buried there. There was a William Hensley, Sr. listed as a resident in Boone Co. in the 1830's to 1850's period. His birth date is about right to be the William, son of William B. There is also a "William" (no middle initial) listed in the county at the same time, along with Clifton. Clifton was a fairly prominent citizen of Columbia, Boone Co., MO. His name appears repeatedly in the newspaper. He lived in the city of Columbia, and was well enough known that locations of businesses, etc. were referenced from Cliff Hensley's home. Not so with the other two Wm.'s in ! Boone Co. Both were apparently farmers in the eastern part of the cou nty. The fact that the newspaper articles never seem to reference a connection between Clifton and the Wm.'s make me wonder if they were NOT closely related; or was this just "family differences"? I have nothing concrete to verify the relationships, but keep hoping that something will turn up. I appreciate your information...
