You can download (FREE) a (blank) copy of the 1840 U.S. census form here: http://www.ancestry.com/save/charts/census.htm and see what information was collected (FYI: there is a place for only the names of the heads of households, NOT for the rest of the household member's names on this form.) The only instance that you would not find a name is if a child was under 6 mos. It was usually because the parents had not named the it yet.
