THOMAS C. HENRY Former State Prison Guard Dead at 86 at Watkins Glen, NY Word was received here yesterday of the death at Watkins Glen, NY, of Thomas C. Henry, for 28 years a guard at the Rhode Island State Prison. Mr. Henry, who would have been 86 next month, had been living there for the past two years with a daughter, Mrs. Arthur H. Jackson. The funeral will be held tomorrow at Watkins Glen and burial will be in Knotty Oak Cemetery, Coventry. Later, a memorial service will be held at Franklin Congregational Church, Cranston, in which Mr. Henry was a deacon. Mr. Henry served as a guard at the prison under Gen. Nelson A. Vial, the warden. He was known as an adept handler of tough prisoners and when asked what his rule was, replied that he always kept in his mind there was "a tender spot in the worst of them." Henry was known for the personal interest he took in his work and the prisoners invariably respected him. In addition to his daughter, Mrs. Jackson, one grandchild and a great-grandchild, he is survived by a sister, Mrs. Elizabeth Salmon, of Olneyville. His wife, who was Alice Emeline Whaley, died several years ago.
