If he applied for pension benefits or if his wife did after he died, sometimes you can find family information on the pension applications. Quite often they would state they have known so and so for such amount of time and they were in good health before entering the military. I have found brothers, sisters, and parents at times, just from their signatures. Just another hint. Good luck. CJ
