Just in short: King James of Scotland and England (of the "King James Bible") sent a lot of Scots to northern Ireland in the early-mid 1600s to settle there, Protestants in a Catholic community. They stayed and worked hard, increasing the value of the land which had been leased to them for 99 years. A century later, the leases came up for renewal (at greatly increased rents), there were famines on the land, and the Presbyterian Scots were not happy with the state-sponsored Church of England. So, for a variety of reasons, many of them emigrated from Ireland in the mid-1700s to North America: some to Canada, some to New Hampshire, some to the frontiers of the English colonies where they could claim land for themselves. Their fervor for independence from just about everything fueled the American Revolution. The term "Scotch-Irish" was actually coined here in the States in the late 1900s by family historians who wanted to distinguish their Protestant, pre-American Revolution imm! igrant lines from the many Catholic Irish immigrants who arrived in the mid and late nineteenth century. Friction between the Protestant descendants of the Scotch-Irish who stayed in northern Ireland and the Catholics there continues to this day. ===================== From: [email protected] Date: Wed Dec 14 09:10:47 CST 2005 To: [email protected] Subject: [HENDERSON] Re: John Henderson married Anne Givens abt 1764 in WVA This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list.
