What a sad, tragic story. It makes me wonder why this girl, Minnie, became available for adoption. I wonder if she had "mental health issues" even as a very young child. Out of curiousity, I went to the 1880 census for Michigan/US, and found out there were 35 James HENDERSON's in Michigan that year. And, this is the family being discussed: James HENDERSON Self M Male W 39 ENG Horse Teester SCOT SCOT Merinda HENDERSON Wife M Female W 32 PA Keeping House PA PA Ray HENDERSON Son S Male W 1 MI ENG PA Minnie HENDERSON Dau S Female W 10 PA PA PA Mary J. GLEASON Other S Female W 20 MI Teaching School CAN NH -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Source Information: Census Place 2nd Ward, Manistee, Manistee, Michigan NOTES: It says that Minnie came from a PA family and she was born there. And, James' wife, Merinda, came from a PA family and was born there. I wonder whether Millie is a niece of Merinda. Or, perhaps, Merinda had a first marriage and Millie was a daughter from her first marriage. Also note that James was born in England and his parents were born in Scotland.
