    1. [HENDERSON] Henderson Station/Depot/Home/Store/Trading Post
    2. Larry Gosnell
    3. I'm trying to gather and sort out as much information and records as I can on anything that makes reference to a HENDERSON Station, Home, Depot, Store, or Trading Post. Below is what I have so far but I'm sure there must be other information out there on this subject matter. There were several Joseph Henderson's in Greene County Tennessee at about the same time and mine was one of them. He does mention a store in his will probated in 1834 Greene County. I'm curious if, during the course of your research, any of the Greene County/Henderson researchers have been able to learn much about the "Henderson station...depot...store"? Are all these references to a Henderson station...depot...store...trading post, all the same place? I would appreciate very much, anything that one would be willing to share with me on this subject. 1. From GOODSPEED'S History of Greene County 1887. The settlement of what is now Greene County was begun about 1788. One of the first settlers was Anthony Moore, who in that year located not far from Henderson's Station, and whose daughter is said to have been the first white child born in the county. The first Methodist society in the State was organized in this county. It was named Ebenezer, and was established in the Earnest neighborhood some time about 1790. This neighborhood was on the Nolachucky River. One of the largest camp-grounds ever built within the bounds of the Holston Conference was erected about one and one-half miles from Ebenezer, near what is now "1887" Henderson's Depot. It was used for many years and was not abandoned until the civil war. It was known as Stone Dam Camp-ground. 2. The history of Afton states that "Unlike most villages, Afton evidently was located not because of any geographical factors, except the cataracts of Sinking Creek, but as a result of the activity of one of her early citizens, Joseph Henderson. Joseph established a trading post at what is now Afton. In his will he left his children money in trade at the "store." He was also responsible for the founding of Afton, Tenn., according to a history of the village: Although Afton is not one of the oldest villages in the county, this section was one of the first and oldest villages in this entire area. Henderson bought a grist mill from a Mr. Marsh who had built the mill and the adjoining Stone Dam at about 1800. An old house, with stone chimneys still stands at Afton - supposedly the Henderson house. Henderson's effects were sold at auction in 1868 and Andrew Johnson bought the property which consisted of the town of Afton. Deeded it to his daughter Margaret Johnson Patterson. 3. 10 Sep 1829. Joseph Henderson established a trading post called Henderson Home, later it became known as Afton. For a long time there was an old log cabin on the Moyers property with a log carved 1783.
