I remember my aunt Irene Gibbs (Johnny Cash's personal secretary for 15 years) telling me several years ago about someone inquiring about my parents' career, and when I saw your message I wondered if it might have been you. I'm pleased that your mother liked my mom's singing. Mother told me one time that the program director at Cincinnati's WLW Radio (where she and Dad briefly appeared) wanted her to sing some songs by herself and she turned them down. Said she was only willing to do duets with Dad. I think perhaps she might have been a little self-conscious without Dad on-mike to help her along (she was 8 years younger than him). Back at Nashville's WLAC, my parents recorded many of their daily radio programs on what was then known as "transcriptions", overlarge discs which the station could play if for one reason or another the featured performers couldn't be there in-person for their shows (usually due to personal appearances out of town). Dad had many ! of these in his possession at the time they retired from the music business in the early '50s, but they were all accidentally destroyed by excessive heat (Dad had left them in a hot car, not realizing how fragile they were). Even if that hadn't happened and I had them now, I'm not sure there's any machines around today that could play them (they ran at 16 rpm). Along with the King acetates made in Cincinnati that I told you about in my previous message, those ruined transcriptions were the only known recordings my parents ever did. At one point, they had a record deal pending with RCA, but it fell through. Mother's still living (she's now 80 years old, but still in reasonably good health). Dad passed away in April, 1995 at the age of 75. If there's any other information I can help you with, please don't hesitate to let me know. Thanks so much for your inquiry. I've enjoyed the discussion. My best to you and your family. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
