"Statement of Service and Personal Description in the case of John Henderson, formerly 1st Sgt. co. A, 1st [U.S.] Artillery and Order of the Board of Commissioners for his admission to the Soldiers Home, D.C." [Summarized] Born Belfast, Ireland 1799. First enlisted in U.S. Army (Corporal, 1st U.S. Infantry) 11/15/1824 at Baton Rouge, LA. Fair complexion, gray eyes, fair hair, 6' tall. Re-upped (with no more than a 14-month gap in his service) until finally discharged July 1, 1849 at Fort Columbus [New York]. Served as Ordnance Sergeant; then Sgt., Co. K, 5th U.S. Infantry; and finally as ist Sergeant in Co. A, 1st U.S. Artillery). Admitted to the Soldiers' Home near Washington, DC 5/3/1852. Died at the Home 8/10/1862.
