I did not realize until you mentioned Dallas County Missouri and KWTO exactly who you were. We have been doing some research on the Smiths of Dallas County. Am I correct that Fred and Eliza Smith were your grandparents? We are trying to connect the various Smiths here with the Smith who married into our branch of the Hendersons. Reuben Smith was born ca. 1843 in PA. His family was in Dallas County MO, Miller TWP in the 1880 census. He married Mary Henderson in AR ca 1865. DH told Bob that you said your Henderson family is not connected to the branch here in MO that you know of, but who knows. Our Hendersons came to Missouri from Kentucky about 1847. Love the story of your parents, Ruth and Bob in Dallas County MO Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Hello, I would like to tell you that I have just started up a new List. I mean it to include research for all the Counties which exist north of the St. Lawrence River in the Province of Quebec. I am aware that many of the Counties have now been grouped into "municiopalities." For instance: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Argenteuil_Regional_County_Municipality%2C_Quebec I am also aware that for residents of the U.S., the place-name, Laurentides, might not be familiar. As a resident of the U.S., I had to learn about it myself. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Laurentides_(region) I also had to learn about the Laurentian Mountains: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Laurentian_mountains I had thought about naming a new List for "Argenteuil County," because that is where some of my ancestors settled. * But I needed to include a much larger area. I thought about naming it, Laurentian Mountains, but found out there was Message Board for LAURENTIDES. So I decided to use the same name. This is the information page: http://lists.rootsweb.com/index/intl/CAN/LAURENTIDES.html I have also found out that the area - north of the St. Lawrence - is often referred to as the Southwest part of the Province of Quebec. But, some refer to as "Quebec North." But, if you look at a map of Canada, you will see that the Province is very large, and there is a very large part of the Province which is MUCH north of the St. Lawrence River. Thank you for your time. Betty (near Lowell, MA, USA) List Administrator for: LAURENTIDES@rootsweb.com CAN-USA-MIGRATION@rootsweb.com (I allow both genealogy and history and geography on my new Lists.) * About 5 years ago someone started up a List for "the former Township of Gore" in Argenteuil County. Some postings are about bordering towns. My ancestors were part of a KERR / HENDERSON family-group which settled there in 1820's.)

I've been so busy with Wanda over the past few days, I forgot that you're interested in this thing too. Unfortunately, I don't have much else to offer. Dad told me that his father, my grandfather John Lindsay Henderson (whom I was named after) was born in 1887 and died in 1939 of an accidental self-inflicted gunshot wound (he was cleaning his rifle and it went off). Sadly, that's all I know about him. I don't know how he came to settle in Greene County, Pennsylvania or what part of the country he migrated from. Of course Arkansas is a long way from Pennsylvania, but there might be a tie-in somewhere. I'll try and contact my cousin Dottie in Nashville (Radio Dot and Smokey's daughter) and see what I can find out. I understand she dabbles in ancestry a little bit. Maybe she can fill me in on a few things.-JH Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Details are sketchy about his early years in music, but at one time he and his younger brother Jack toured the country as "The Sunshine Brothers" with very little success. Then somewhere along the way, Dad broke away from Jack and went on the road alone, bouncing from one radio station to another. In late 1943 he landed at KWTO in Springfield, Missouri, a well-known haven for live talent, and Dad joined the daily "Red Belcher Show" as a featured singer. Also at the station was a sister act called "The Smith Sisters" (consisting of my mother Wanda Smith and her older sister Helen). Mom (born October 1, 1927) spent her childhood on a farm in Dallas County, Missouri (40 miles north of Springfield), and the KWTO job was her first time on radio. To make a long story short (well, I guess it's too late for that) Dad saw her and liked what! he saw! They married April 29, 1944, left KWTO and headed to at station in Jackson, Tennessee for their first job as a duet act. Then it was on to KTHS Hot Springs, Arkansas, WVOK Birmingham, WLW Cincinnati, WNOX Knoxville, and several others before finally finding a home at WLAC Nashville for about 5 years. After retiring from the music business in the early '50s, my parents settled in Dallas County, Missouri (the area where Mom grew up and where she still lives to this day). I was born there in '55, graduated from high school in '73, left for radio jobs in Pittsburg, Kansas, Winter Haven, Florida and finally Nashville before coming home to roost in '81 to accept a staff announcer/deejay position at KWTO Springfield, Missouri (sound familiar? yep, the station where my folks met!) I haven't deejayed since '92, but am still at KWTO working as a studio engineer (the station is now "news talk"). When I was involved in country radio, I did have a chance to interview many of th! e biggest country stars of the day. Among them: Kenny Rogers, Vince Gi ll, Charley Pride, Roy Acuff, Billy Walker, Jack Greene, Minnie Pearl, Eddie Rabbitt, Alabama, Reba McEntire, Ricky Van Shelton, Dan Seals, Vern Gosdin, many others. The highlight for me though, would have to be the interview I did with my all-time favorite performer Floyd Cramer, whom I had a chance to chat with backstage at the Grand Ole Opry House in May of 1980 just before the taping of the TV special "A Tribute To Chet Atkins". I never learned to play music, but if I had, it would have been to play piano like Floyd, the absolute best! He was a nice guy too. If you would like to send Mom a letter, I'm sure she would love to hear from you. Her mailing address is P. O. Box 786, Buffalo, Missouri 65622. She worked mostly with her husband Louis Swan (as "Radio Dot And Smokey") until their divorce in the mid '50s. I believe they appeared for a while on the famous WWVA Jamboree in Wheeling, West Virginia, as well as other smaller stations in the Virginia and West Virginia areas. At one time they even had several records on the market, released on the MGM label (no hits however). During their association with Ernest Tubb in Nashville in the late '40s, they made guest appearances on the Grand Ole Opry and appeared in Ernest's movie "Hollywood Barn Dance" (1947) in which they sang a couple of songs. Remarkably, that picture is still in print and is now on DVD. If you're interested in seeing footage of Radio Dot and Smokey performing, you can purchase the movie through the Ernest Tubb Record Shop in Nashville. After Dot's music career ended, she stayed close to her many friends in the music business by opening a Nashville c! lub located on what later became known as "Music Row". "The Professional Club" was specially geared toward music industry personnel and Dot owned and operated it until her death from heart failure on December 26, 1972 at the age of 56.-JH Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Author: debijon1 Surnames: Gibbs, Cash Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.henderson/5692.1.1.2/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Hello again Wanda. I remember my aunt Irene Gibbs (Johnny Cash's personal secretary for 15 years) telling me several years ago about someone inquiring about my parents' career, and when I saw your message I wondered if it might have been you. I'm pleased that your mother liked my mom's singing. Mother told me one time that the program director at Cincinnati's WLW Radio (where she and Dad briefly appeared) wanted her to sing some songs by herself and she turned them down. Said she was only willing to do duets with Dad. I think perhaps she might have been a little self-conscious without Dad on-mike to help her along (she was 8 years younger than him). Back at Nashville's WLAC, my parents recorded many of their daily radio programs on what was then known as "transcriptions", overlarge discs which the station could play if for one reason or another the featured performers couldn't be there in-person for their shows (usually due to personal appearances out of town). Dad had many ! of these in his possession at the time they retired from the music business in the early '50s, but they were all accidentally destroyed by excessive heat (Dad had left them in a hot car, not realizing how fragile they were). Even if that hadn't happened and I had them now, I'm not sure there's any machines around today that could play them (they ran at 16 rpm). Along with the King acetates made in Cincinnati that I told you about in my previous message, those ruined transcriptions were the only known recordings my parents ever did. At one point, they had a record deal pending with RCA, but it fell through. Mother's still living (she's now 80 years old, but still in reasonably good health). Dad passed away in April, 1995 at the age of 75. If there's any other information I can help you with, please don't hesitate to let me know. Thanks so much for your inquiry. I've enjoyed the discussion. My best to you and your family. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
