I haven't gotten into searching this line as intensely as my others, but I will say the naming pattern helped! Also...many children died...and tho it was common to rename another child with the same name (thus confusing some of us that search lol) It also could be some didn't and just continued the naming. The pattern helped me when I went back with my Armstrongs to Scotland. So now I am trying it with my Copelands. I too was very lucky in that my mother passed info down to me so I started with alot to go on. Well I wish you good luck. You can only do the best you can! Yes, I heartily agree that the R.W. Lists are great ! I got the Internet about 8 years ago and started subscribing to the Lists about a year or so later. I started with a few, and now? I belong to well over 100 Lists, perhaps many more than that. And, I belong to Lists in Canada and the U.K. Because of that, and the "British Home Children" List, I have e-mailed with people on almost every continent. And, it is a lot of fun ! A few years ago I thought I was e-mailing a man in Canada about my LEWIS ancestor. When I got a response a couple weeks later, that man was e-mailing from the top of the Andes Mountains in Peru. He was "on assignment" there. I had basic information about my family-tree from my mother's research. But the people on the Internet have provided most of the rest of it. I have a great deal of information, but it is all on paper - in boxes in my living room. I don't have a web site, and never put it into FTM or anything similar. But, what I do is put all my "findings" into the Lists and Boards. As far as "naming patterns" go, I tried that. And, it didn't help with the KERR's and HENDERSON's. Mainly because we don't know about their parents in Ireland. Betty Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Perhaps pieces of census during 1800s....but not until 1901 (I believe) is there any definite info. Now...because you (and I) are looking back as far as 1700s that is even harder. There are the Freeholders lists, Griffiths lists, Directorys....and sometimes people who have researched a name will post info that they have come across (like myself I have lots of Armstrong info-not mine lol). The best way I have learned to search....is to first join a mailing list (thru rootsweb). I belong to maybe 10 of them. Ones with my surnames or areas that I am looking in. I CAN NOT emphasize enough what I have learned and found thru these lists! First...you are dealing with people who live in these areas are are so very helpful. Second there just "may be" that distant relative of yours who has one more little piece of info that just might connect you. And third...the "historical" and "genealogical" knowledge of some of the people on these lists will blow you away! lol I have learned so much, made many new friends all over the world and even found relatives....going back as far as ggg! g grandparents in Scotland....because of these lists. Also....yes you are quite right when you say crossing borders. N Ireland is not a very large area and back then people crossed what we see as borders today, whether to work, get married or baptize a child. It was usually "what ever is closer". So in searching Ireland, tho where they lived is very important....also too is what was near them. If you do decide to search there....let me know. I have incredible sites to look at. Map sites etc. If I ever do find new info on my Hendersons I will certainly post it. lol Before I go....2 things that I found extremely useful in my searching.... FIRST>>> If you have surnames as middle names...they CAN definitly be big clues in past lineage!!!! SECOND>>> The traditional naming pattern! Used during 1700s to the late 1800s..INCREDIBLE how this can help in search of past family! That tradition applied equally across Great Brittain and Ireland. 1st son After father's father 2nd son After mother's father 3rd son After the father 4th son After the father's eldest brother. 1st dau After mother's mother 2nd dau After mother's father's mother 3rd dau After the mother 4th dau After mother's eldest sister Good luck to ALL Sue in NY Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. My HENDERSON ancestor came from the northern part of County Sligo, Ireland, which is near the border with County Leitrim. And, County Leitrim borders on County Fermanagh, Northern Ireland. (I have an old Encyclopedia (books) where I can look at a map.) I know very little on Ireland's history; I have to keep looking things up. But, I would guess that families could have moved back and forth between these counties during the 1700's. Within the past few days, I was told that finding the parents of my HENDERSON and KERR ancestors in County Sligo in the 1700's -- would be nearly impossible ! So, the many people researching them have no way of knowing, also, who their siblings were (or cousins). Sad to hear that. Robert and Elizabeth (HENDERSON) KERR in late 1800's; they were born in Canada in 1827, a few years after their parents arrived in Canada. Robert and James were brothers; Mary and Elizabeth were sisters. Another HENDERSON sister married and came down to Massachusetts. I heard from a descendant several years ago. There are many descendants of the KERR / HENDERSON family group in the Prov. of Quebec in 1820's. Unfortunately, none of us can find out about he families they left behind in County Sligo, Ireland. And, that means we don't know about the siblings and/or cousins they left behind. We know about a few KERR's who settled in other parts of Canada at the same time who might be related to them. But, I don't remember that we found other HENDERSON's who might have been related. If anyone has a HENDERSON who came down from Canada from 1850 on, there is a chance they could be connected to that family-group. But, if you have one arriving in the 1700's, we don't have a way of finding out if they were related. Betty Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Does anything look familiar?

Debbie says "hi". She knew who you were immediately. It's nice to hear from you. Yes, Fred and Eliza (aka "Lizzie") Smith were my grandparents. Fred died in February, 1950 (long before I came along in '55), so I didn't know him but I did get to spend quite a bit of time with my grandmother Lizzie when I was a kid, and enjoyed being with her very much. She passed away August 16th, 1977 at the age of 86. If that date rings a bell, it's because that's the day Elvis Presley died. I was on the air at WKDA Nashville that lazy summer afternoon when the bulletin came in. It woke everybody up at the station, let me tell you! Then later that night I got a call at home informing me about Grandma's passing, so I got hit with a double whammy that day! Anyway, my grandfather Fred Smith and his father George Washington Smith came into the Missouri Ozarks from West Union, Iowa in the early 1900's and settled on a farm a few miles north of Buffalo. Fred met Eliza Evans ! soon after, and they were married in 1906. My mother Violet Wanda turned out to be the last of their 7 children, born October 1, 1927 and you know the rest from previous posts. By the way, another individual who has been following my Mom & Dad's story on this board over the past few days (her name is "Lynn") has been trying to get a line on some Hendersons in Arkansas. Maybe the "Mary Henderson" you mentioned is part of the ones she's looking for. You'll find her message a few posts back. Thanks guys. Debbie and I hope this finds you both well. Take care.
