Posted on: Henderson Queries Reply Here: http://genconnect.rootsweb.com/gc/FamilyAssoc/Henderson/1063 Surname: Henderson, Ellenwood ------------------------- I recently purchased a photograph of a man at an antique shop, whose name is listed as Sherman Henderson, and "Gertrude Ellenwood's mother's brother". The picture was taken by a professional photographer named Root in Eureka (Humboldt Co.) CA in approx. 1890. Sherman is posed, has dark hair and a moustache, is dressed in a coat, vest, shirt and tie typical of 1890's, and he appears to me to be approximately 30 years old. If Gertrude's maiden name was Ellenwood, then Sherman's sister married an Ellenwood, if that would be of any help. I enjoy buying lovely old pictures like these in antique shops and locating descendants/family members so that I can re-unite the pictures, for only my costs, with people who will treasure them. The picture of Sherman is in excellent condition, is 4-Œ x 6-œ, and is an original, on heavy card stock, as was typical during that time period. If this is your family, please do NOT post here, but Email me directly.
Posted on: Henderson Queries Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/FamilyAssoc/Henderson/1062 Surname: Henderson, Thornton, Valentine ------------------------- Thanks a million for your response. I am addicted to genealogy research and I need my daily fix! PLEASE send me the page you were talking about! Now about this Daniel, I am afraid we are not talking about the same one. Since I posted that original message, I have found out some facts and been able to document MOST of them. The thing troubling me at the moment is that IF you go by the 1850 Census, my Daniel was born in 1800. Here is what I know - Daniel Henderson b. ~1790 (in South Carolina) d. before 1860 buried in Lemon, Smith County, Mississippi. Wife 1 Sallie Valentine b. ~1800 (in Alabama) d. ? buried ? children from this wife: William "Bill" Henderson (my direct ancestor) Caroline Henderson Alexander Henderson Richard Henderson Wife 2 Sarah Catherine Thorton b. 1808 (Smith County, Mississippi) d. before 1860 buried in Lemon, Smith County, Mississippi children from this wife: Nathan Henderson Harriet Henderson Benjamin Henderson So I do not think we are talking about the same person. Please, let's keep in touch as we will probably stumble upon facts that the other is interested in. Just a quick word. I have been thinking a lot this week about a man called David Hollingsworth (from Louisiana.) He was my high school band director and last I heard was the he was in Florida. If you are any relation, let him know I would love to know how he is doing these days. Again, Thanks a million!
>From "Gail Bath" <gailbath@home.com> I am trying to find John HENDERSON born about 1857 and married to Alexina STORRIE. I can find very little about John but family info says he was a cabinet maker and died 22 Jun 1893 at age 36 leaving his widow with 6 children. His family was supposed to have taken back the family business leaving her very little. Alexina was born 22 Jan 1858 in Edinburgh parish and died 18 Dec 1945 in Victoria, BC. She immigrated to Canada around 1911 with most of her children. I have recently found out that Alexina STORRIE was illigitamate and the name on her birth certificate was Alexina COMB, her mother Mary Ann COWIE COMB. I'm not sure where STORRIE comes in but the IGI lists Alexander STORRIE and Mary Ann COWIE as her parents. I know it's not much to go on but any help would be greatly appreciated. Cheers, Gail
Posted on: Henderson Queries Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/FamilyAssoc/Henderson/1061 Surname: Henderson, Hollingsworth ------------------------- I think I have found a Daniel Henderson in the line I am looking at. Born CA 1790 in South Carolina. My records show that his daughter was Delpha Henderson, who married Jacob Jr. Hollingsworth in Craven County, South Carolina. The connection is sketchy at best right now. I show that Jacob Sr. Hollingsworth was born in Virginia, but died in Craven County, South Carolina, where his son, Jacob Jr. Hollingsworth was born and married Delpha Henderson. They then moved to Pickens County, Alabama. Their children included Daniel Jackson Hollingsworth, my great-great-great-grandfather, who was born in Pickens County, Alabama. I have a copy of a page from the Hollingsworth Register by Henry Hollingsworth, Vol. 3, No. 4, dated December 1967. This document says, and I quote: "...Jacob who married Delpha Henderson and moved to Pickens County, Alabama." Henry H. states in this article that the complete copy of Jacob Sr.'s last Will and Testament is included in the Register, in Vol. 1, No. 3, October 1965, pages 114-115. I can send you a copy of the page I have in my possession if you will email me your snail mail address, regarding the Hendersons. It states just what I said. I don't have a copy of the Will from Jacob which may include Delpha and her father. Also, just to confirm Delpha's existence, you can look her up on the LDS website at http://www.familysearch.com, and she is mentioned in the 1850 Census at a ripe old age still living in Jacob Jr. Hollingsworth's household in Pickens County, Alabama. If you find any information about Daniel Henderson to confirm that he is her father, please let me know. I am sorry that I do not have her mother's information. I'll see if I can find anything in Census records in SC. Thanks! It is good to know that someone else is looking for information on the same man. :) Cheryl Hollingsworth cheryliz@directlink.net

>From <Pegr001@aol.com> Dear Mr. Elliott, I do believe this is my Henderson line and includes some information on my Dunnegan line that I have not been able to unravel the mystery. I am at work at the moment but will get back with you later with dates, etc. Off the top of my head, I am looking for the parents of Delilah Henderson who married Alexander Tate. Their daughter, Elizabeth 'Sophronia' Tate married my ancester Thompson Dunnegan. Thompson's father, Absalom Dunnegan, has several daughters and we are guessing as to who they are, but they married and the group we have little information on went to Clay and Owen Co., IN among other places. I would be very interested in any information you are willing to share and I will send you as much information as I have on this Dunnegan family group. Message From TwigsNTX@aol.com Seeking clues on the following missing Henderson's of IN. Abaraham Henderson, b ca 1797 KY, son of David Henderson and Ingra Kittle, came to Owen Co., IN by 1818. In the 1820 census he seems to be married with a young male living in the household. His first wife apparently died, as he married 13 Jul 1826 Owen Co., IN to Elizabeth Evans, daughter of Andrew. Abraham Henderson died/estate by 1836 Owen Co., IN, and the heirs were listed, Elizabeth (wife) b ca 1805 KY, Daniel b abt 1817-19 KY/IN, Rebecca b 1822 IN, John b 1820-30, Margary b abt 1830 IN, Martha J. I have identified the married daughter's of Abraham Henderson, but am seeking the lost sons. Does anyone have a Daniel, John, Isaac or Levi born in Indiana in the above timeframe? Also of interest is another Daniel Henderson living in Owen Co., IN at this same time. Daniel Henderson b 1807 VA (too old to be son of Abraham above), wife Nancy b 1810 VA, Mary E. b 1828 VA, James 1833 IN, Edmond 1835 IN, Charles T. b 1837 IN, Nancy A. b 1839 IN, Henry J. b 1841 IN, Martin (W.)? b 1843 IN, Joseph E. b 1846 IN, Jeremiah S. b 1848 IN. It is believed this Daniel's wife, Nancy was Nancy Elliott, and the Martha Elliott b 1786 VA was perhaps her mother, living with them in 1850 Clay Twp, Owen Co IN. If anyone has knowledge of the above two families, I would love to exchange further data. Regards, Mac Elliott

I am seeking information regarding a Dr. James Claude Henderson. He enterd the Confederate Army in St. Clair Missouri as an assistant surgeon. He may have moved to Missouri from North Carolina or what is now West Virginia. Thanks Dean Henderson http://www.netscope.net
There is a lot of material out there that can't be completely documented. On the other hand, it can't be completely discounted. As far as I can see, the best solution is to keep it in an "undocumented" file in the hope that someday it can be verified. I see a lot of people doing this. Don't discount oral tradition. A lot can be done with the undocumented information to make it useful. I think my own Henderson research is an example. I got my basic names from my mother. She was not a Henderson and I don't know who she got the information from. It could have been my grandfather Marshall whose mother was a Henderson. I never knew my grandfather who died a full ten years before I was born. Or it could have been my grandmother Marshall, the daughter-in-law of a Henderson, who was interested in family connections and who, I have since found, knew many of the family members. What I got was a listing of family first names and some very vague places where they had lived. When I started I wasn't sure if these were Marshalls or Hendersons or who lived where. By the time I was able to start serious research (about two years ago) most of the older generation was long gone and the few the existed were unknown to me. By searching on the name of Samuel Henderson, one of my great grandmother's brothers, and finding someone of that name in the county my grandparents lived in, I was able to find a biography written when he was still alive. It listed him and his wife (which matched with the name my father had called his aunt), his parents, his eight siblings and his children. There was information in this that was new to me, but I was able to verify it was my Samuel because it listed as his sister, my great grandmother whose name was known to me. A brother whose name I knew was also listed. The best part was that several of the last names of the married sisters and daughters matched names I knew. It also listed where he was born and that he had lived in IL and OH prior to coming to NE; and that his parents came from PA. Since finding that information, I have been able to build upon it. I have searched census records to verify names and date and where various family members lived; I have obtained copies of marriage records from IL where Samuel and most of his siblings married; I have found information on Samuel's maternal grandfather and obtained a copies of his will and Revolutionary War pension records. Best of all, I have followed some of these vague leads and found some cousins who have additional information on branches of the family. One of these is Samuel's granddaughter, now 87, who I had met when I was a child of 6 or 7. She has been very helpful on her branch of the family. (I had memories of the visit but had begun to think it was all imagination on my part before getting in contact with her.) Joining the Clan Henderson and submitting my information to their genealogist netted me another cousin descended from yet another of Samuel's eight siblings. He provided me with information on that branch. Another cousin came to light through correspondence with someone researching the county in IL where my Hendersons had lived. What I am saying is that our ancestors were living, breathing people, who didn't always keep exact records. Perhaps the first Bible was destroyed in a fire or lost along the way west and the records were put into a replacement. Perhaps the census taker spelled the name wrong. Perhaps they gave him the name they were known by or preferred. Perhaps grandma lied about her age. Maybe the first baby came just a wee bit early and they fudged the date when asked by a later census taker. (My grandmother used to say that an amazing amount of first babies were premature. And someone once told me that only the mother knows for sure who her children are.) Maybe the family was off visiting relative in another county or state when the census was taken. Perhaps they just avoided the census taker. Carol is quite correct when she says that books are not always accurate. It all depends upon the thoroughness of the researcher and the records available to him or her. In some cases it may have been a lack of good research, but in others it was simply wishful thinking on the part of the author, particularly if a lot of the ancestors were rather prominent. There are any number of reasons why it is difficult to pin these things down. The best we can do is take down the information that looks right and matches and seek to verify it with actual documentary evidence. Gloria
I have thought about getting involved in the Clan Henderson site(s) but I wouldn't have any idea where my line fits in. I don't have my line worked back enough to have a clue where we're originally from. I can't get out of Ohio in the early 1800's to find out where we even came into this country. If/when I do get my line across the ocean, what Clan Henderson sites would you recommend? BTW, my grandfather, Harry William Henderson Sr (Adams Co, OH; 1908-1993) used to have a lot of really witty sayings, one of which was "The first baby can come any time. After that, it takes nine months." - Diana
