    1. [HENDERSON] John Wimbish Henderson
    2. Hello, I am really new at this but hope someone out there recognizes my Henderson family and can help. I apologize if I am not using the correct format but I will learn as I go along. This is all I know so far. Most was gathered from cemeteries and obituaries. I am finding it very difficult to differentiate between Pleasant's and Alexander's in this family to find the correct line. John Wimbish Henderson John Wimbish Henderson, son of Malinda nee Wimbish Henderson and Dr. Alexander Henderson, grandson of Col. Pleasant Henderson (of the Transylvania Company) and cousin of Dr. Archibald Henderson (of the University of Virginia). John Wimbish Henderson was born in Charlotte, N.C. on October 7, 1855, parents: Dr. Alexander Henderson and Malinda Wimbish.       John moved to Sherard, Mississippi with his family at the age of four (abt. 1859).  At the age of twelve, his father died (abt. 1867), John his mother and his family moved back to Virginia.  Which would lead you to believe Alexander Henderson died in Mississippi, possibly due to injuries or illness from the Civil War.  I believe by then he had at least two sisters: Fannie nee Henderson Gardner Lesley born in North Carolina, and Sarah Leigh nee Henderson Greene, born 1853 died 1930 buried in Oakwood Cemetery, Tunica, Ms.   John Wimbish Henderson, moved back to Mississippi in 1888, to Holly Springs.  He practiced law with a partner whose last name was Chalmers (or Chambers).  He married Josephine Stephens, in 1900.  Josephine was born in Hickman, Ky in 1868 and died in Tunica, May 29, 1931.  He resided in Tunica, Ms. until his death in 1933.         He was an attorney in Tunica with a partner but I'm not sure who.  He was a writer, a poet, an inventor and the elected County Superintendent of Tunica Dept. of education from 1896, to 1913.  He was the Tunica County State legislator, and ran for governor of Mississippi.  He organized the 2nd Mississippi Infantry Company E , during the Spanish American War and was made a Captain.  The 2nd Ms. never saw action but he was promoted to Major and later served as a Colonel in Gov. Noel's staff in Mississippi. Other family buried in Henderson Family Plot, Tunica, Ms. Malinda Wimbish Henderson born: November 1829 died: October 4, 1905 Sarah Leigh Henderson                Anthony S. Greene born: 1853                                          b. 1858 died: 1930 Ruth Leigh Henderson born: 1902 died: 1915 Herman Aubrey Gardner born:  November 17, 1878 Died:  July 12, 1905 Other family members mentioned in some of John W. Henderson's obituaries 1933 are: Sisters: Fannie H. Lesley Mrs. Greene of Ciaro, Ill. (but I think there were more) Daughter: Ruth Henderson Travis (my grandmother) Nieces: Mrs. G. W. Roycroft Mrs. Oscar Dooley Mrs. Ivan LaRue (I think these are nieces with the maiden name of Gardner) Nephew: Albert Gardner Brother in Law: Alexander Gardner Thank you, Vicki

    1. [HENDERSON] Archibald Henderson
    2. Carol Wells
    3. I seek Archibald Henderson the son of Nathaniel Henderson who died 1782 in Craven County, South Carolina. Older genealogy books are misleading and state as fact happenings that are not supported by documentation. Can these Archibald Hendersons be identified? Archibald Henderson born about 1740 in Scotland, died 1806 probably in Marlborough District, SC. Wife was Mary. Not the son of Nathaniel. Archibald Henderson who married Elizabeth Sellers 1803 and in 1838 was living in Haywood County, NC. Archibald Henderson born about 1740 maybe in Pennsylvania (someone's guess). His wife died before he did, name unknown. His will was signed 21 Nov 1778 in Mecklenburg County, North Carolina. Archibald Henderson born 1749 (baptized 26 March 1749) Augusta, VA, died Feb 1781 Augusta, VA. Father was James, Mother probably Martha Hamilton. Archibald Henderson born about 1753 (from his pension application R4866 GA) He lived ca. 1776 in Baltimore County, PA!, 1778 Hanover Co., VA, 1829 Gwinnett Co., GA, 1835 Henry Co., GA. Archibald born about 1750 or 1756, lived in Rockingham County, N.C. wife's surname Lloyd. Archibald Henderson born about 1760, lived in York County, SC. Wife was Sasrah Carothers, dau of James. I have indormation about later Archibald Hendersons, but it's unlikely that any later man of this name would be a son of Nathaniel who died 1782. Carol

    3. Posted on: Henderson Queries Reply Here: http://genconnect.rootsweb.com/gc/FamilyAssoc/Henderson/11191 Surname: Henderson, Milby, Lea, Ward ------------------------- Lois-- Thanks for your response! In the 1880 TX Census, J. A. was shown to be 40 years old. I suppose 4 years is debatable at this point. I have come across new information recently that says his wife's name was Emma V. She and their son, Joseph Milby were in San Antonio, TX by 1885. And then shortly thereafter, she is listed as widow of J. A. Henderson. Joseph Milby Henderson married Harriet Fitzhugh Ward in June of 1893 and then disappears from the city directory. As for the area in PA, I have not a clue as I have not wanted to go that direction until I verified that I had the right J. A. and Joseph M. Will you please tell me what you have on the Joseph born in 1844? Thanks for your help! Leona

He would have been about 36 in 1880. Does this age come close to what your ancestor should be? Have you any idea the area of PA your Henderson came from? I have some PA information on a earlier Joseph if you are interested. We think he may be connected to ours but just specualtion at this point.

    1. [HENDERSON] From another list re: William Henderson Lexington Ky
    2. Posted to Lexington County board from Ray Henderson - just passing it along for all of the Henderson's interest. Begin: I'm new to the list & thought I'd just jump right  in and ask a question. Am I the only person in the world who is working on the name HENDERSON in Fayette Co?? I have a James Alexander Henderson who was born near Lexington in 1786.  I suspect that his father might be William Henderson (from VA)  but since there seemed to be a Henderson under every rock & behind every tree in early Fayette Co I'm  not sure.   I know James had a brother named Archibald. Allied   ( Fayette Co    ca 1800-1830 )  names of this pesky James Alex Henderson family were CASSELL, TILTON & WHITE.   I'd love to hear from someone who was also working on this family. Thanks Ray Henderson xrx_doc@prodigy.net http://tnhendersons.rootsweb.com/ http://pages.prodigy.net/xrx_doc/index.html
