    1. [HENDERSON] Shadrack Henderson, Nelson Co., VA, 1811
    2. Hello, Henderson listers! I'm looking for any information on Shadrack Henderson, whose will was probated in Nelson Co., Virginia, in 1811, and any information on his children. The will gives his wife's name as "May" (perhaps an error for Mary) and lists his children as - Sally Martin [md. George Martin in 1794] Barbary (Barbara) Martin [md. Elisha Martin in 1795] Joseph Henderson John Henderson Mary Tisdel [md. Robert Tisdale in 1804] Nancy Kirby [apparently md. James Kirby in 1806] Lucy Beaver William Henderson In particular, I would be especially interested in any evidence that any of these "children" of Shadrack Henderson were known by the surname MARTIN (aside from the marriages of Sally and Barbara to Messrs. Martin). I have several reasons to suspect that Shadrack was the second husband of the wife May/Mary named in his will; that May/Mary's first husband was a Mr. Martin; and that at least three of Shadrack's "children" (i.e., John, Nancy, and William) were known by the surname (or maiden name) MARTIN in certain records of the period. These reasons are described on my Web site, at http://va.genealogy.tripod.com/martin.htm A transcription of Shadrack's will is at http://va.genealogy.tripod.com/shadrack.txt Please respond to scott.simpson@altavista.com , rather than only to the list. 3. For the persons interested in Daniel Henderson. The TNGenWeb site for Greene Co. has a Daniel Henderson b. in Green Co. abt 1772, married to Sarah Hickman. He is also listed on the 1791 & 1792 Greene Co. Tax List. Maybe this will give someone a lead. My GGGfather Atwill? Henderson was to have served during the Mexican War [1848-1848]. It has been the family story that he died at sea in the Gulf of Mexico but, I haven't found anything to verrify by that name. He was m. to Mary Foreman and had two sons born in NC, Atwill (Atwell) Henderson b.1844 and Russell Henderson b,1846. Just wondering if you might have a similar senerio with some of your Henderson line. I also have noticed a marked family resemblance between your James Pickney Henderson and my GGfather Atwill Henderson. I will email you direct and send a jpeg and let you compair for yourself. On the Irish line of Henderson's it is my contention that the line was originated from Scottland and was established during the Scottish occupation of Irland by Robert the Bruce. Does that sound logical?

    3. Hank, I have been reading with interest the emails to and from you today, and wonder if you aren't from the HENDERSON clan at Fordell, Fife, which is documented back to the 1300's also. Some of them went to the Carolinxa from vA, but my John, son of William, son of Thomas, son of William m. to a BRUCE and then William from fife and John, etc., went to Garrard Co, KY and then to Tn where he died. I'd be interested in knowing if this is also your line. I guess I'm still young, as age 70. Boone/Henderson connection so I was wondering if you ever heard of a Obadiah Henderson? I have heard that he was possibly a "Long Hunter" with Daniel's group. I come from a line of Hendersons that came from PA to Illinois about 1854. A distant cousin believes that this Obadiah was our Uriah Hendersons father but they don't seem to have any information to back it up. One reason that I'm inclined to believe there is a connection is because our Uriah settled in Putnam Co. Illinois along with a Andrew Henderson. Andrew Russell Henderson married Hannah Dixon. They have a son George who marries a Margaret Finley. The Finley's of Putnam Co say we are related to them but they aren't sure just how. I did a little reading up on Daniel Boone and found that he came out of PA and certainly the Finleys were involved in the Boone history. I know this is sketchy but I was wondering if you had ever heard of this Obadiah or knew of any connection be! tween the surnames I have mentioned. thanks lois

I suspect that you are in the same clan but down a different stream. From North Carolina, etc, it appears that my direct line went to Mississippi then to Texas. Another branch which my line seems to have stemmed from went through Alabama, Texase, Louisana, Arkansas - maybe not all the same branch there. It can get a little confusing. >From (Judge) Charles Henderson (The Translyvania Company - the one that hired Daniel Boone to open the wilderness road through the Cunberland Gap, then lead the settlers into Kentuky) My branch split off in oine direction and several others split in various directions. Looking at Daniel - perhaps that is a direct line from Charles (Judge) Charles Henderson. I believe one of his daughters married the son of Daniel Boone (Or the other way around). It may be that the name Daniel followed that line. Then on down the line from Charles, James Pickney Henderson (An Uncle of mine but I can not document the connection) went through Mississippi to Texas, arrived there in about 1835. Joined the Texas revolution, ffirst ambassador to France, and first Governor of Texas. In about 1855 his law partner (Rusk) was US Senator from Texas, committed suicide, and James Pickney Henderson was appointed to served out the term of the deceased Rusk. However James died after a couple of months as Senator I thinkk of Pneumonia. There is a statue of him in the court house square in San Augustine, Texas, and , of course, his picture in the rotounda of the capitol at Austin ,Texas. His picture is the first in the line of governors and James W. Bush is the last - until now. Wish I could give you more - but that is it. I have my direct line back to 1370 in Scotland. Average age 72.3 years - so I have beat the average by six years and counting. Sincerely Arno A. "Hank" Henderson Jr.

I wish I could offer a little more assistance, I'm afraid I won't have much information that can help you, however I would love to talk more about the subject with you, if you would like to email me that would be great! kjaj4v@aol.com Now more to the point of your question: I don't have a clue who my JW Henderson's parents were. US Census records show that JW was born in Canada in 1820, his father was born in England and his mother in NY. Family legend states that his father's name may also have been John or John William, or possibly even Johnston Henderson, and no clues to his mother's name. I believe he had brothers, whose names I do not know. I have no idea about sisters. John William Henderson was a widower at the time of his marriage to Eliza Uptogrove Bratt. No idea who his first wife may have been. Again, sorry I don't have more information for you, but I would love to talk to you more about this. I've had another researcher ask me the same question and I would love to hear more about your William and Mary Henderson. Look forward to hearing from you. K

    2. Bill Caddell
    3. Russell, That was my opinion also, but, as you know, many back in the 1800s (and before) could not read or write, and, the census taker simply wrote down what he heard. I was advised (my original email) about the problem with ANDERSON-HENDERSON by a professional genealogist in Virginia recently. My ancestor, Andrew CADDEL (the immigrant) served indentured service in Virginia(?), married a Jean HENDERSON (the dau of the planter to whom he was indentured) in abt 1765, Orange Co., NC. At the time he had both ANDERSON and HENDERSON neighbors. One of his daughters married a James ANDERSON. They lived in the Ornge/Caswell/Person Cos. area from c1754 - c1805.
