    1. HENDERSON "Loyalist" - MA/USA to NB/CAN
    2. Betty
    3. Hello, This summer I have been working on a genealogy project for my newly found (Internet-found) step-cousins. I met them in person this summer, and found out that they knew very little to almost nothing about their grandparents, Charles A. BEDELL and Mrs. Hazel (SHAW) (McCAVOUR) BEDELL. As it turned out, Hazel SHAW had been born in New Brunswick, Canada, in 1895 to Edward SHAW and Eliza(beth) HENDERSON. Edward SHAW was born in England, and Eliza HENDERSON was born in New Brunswick, but I couldn't find anything before that. Because of the NB Lists, and the helpful people there, I was given a "contact" for the SHAW family, and he e-mailed me this morning. He said that he thinks Eliza's parents were John HENDERSON and Mary BOYLE, who married in NB in 1850. But, he thinks that John came from "a Loyalist family" from Massachusetts ! I was wondering if anyone knew who this HENDERSON "Loyalist" was ! FYI: Edward SHAW was born in England, but he might have come to Massachusetts first, before moving on to New Brunswick. And, Edward and Eliza might have visited Massachusetts once or twice, as one of their daughters might have been born in Lowell, MA. Thank you for your time. Betty (near Lowell, MA, USA) Another FYI: I also have an Elizabeth HENDERSON on "my" family tree. She was born in Quebec, Canada, in 1827, and, in 1851, she married her cousin, Robert KERR, who had also been born there in 1827. Their parents were part of a "family group" which left Sligo, Ireland, in 1823. Robert and Eliza KERR's first son, William KERR, would grow up to become my great-grandfather.

I just "searched" the archives for "Loyalist" or "Loyalists" and I see there were at least two. One went to Quebec Province, and one went to Nova Scotia ! So, perhaps, the John HENDERSON in New Brunswick was a member of the extended HENDERSON family who went to Nova Scotia in the 1700's !

As it turns out, Hazel was born in New Brunswick in 1895 and was a child of Edward SHAW and Eliza(beth) HENDERSON who probably married in Saint John, NB, ~1878. (In 1881 Canadian Census) Because of the Internet, I was put in contact with a descendant of another member of that SHAW family. I heard from him this morning, and he tells me that the parents of Eliza HENDERSON were probably John HENDERSON and Mary BOYLE. They probably married in New Brunswick in 1850. This person also believes that John HENDERSON came from a HENDERSON "Loyalist" who came up to Canada from Massachusetts. I was wondering if anyone knows which HENDERSON from Massachusetts was "a Loyalist." .... FYI: Mrs. Hazel (SHAW) (McCAVOUR) BEDELL became the second wife of my grandfather, Silas Dean LEWIS, ~1938, and thus the four BEDELL children became the step-children of my grandfather. Thank you for your time. Betty (near Lowell, MA) Another FYI: I have an Elizabeth HENDERSON on "my" family tree. William KERR was the first child of Robert and Elizabeth KERR, and he would grow up to become my great-grandfather; he migrated to Boston, MA ~1870.

    1. James Henderson Guilford Co. NC- NOT married to Anne Cahoon
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: Henderson, Cahoon Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/yNi.2ACEB/5483 Message Board Post: There has been some confusion about just who was the wife of James Henderson, for whom a marriage bond giving the name of his bride as Anne Cahoon purportedly existed in Guilford Co., NC, dated 30 July 1779. This conflicts with statements made by one of his sons and one of his granddaughters that James's wife was Sarah. The bond DOES exist, however, the clerk who made it obviously made some big errors. I have a copy of the bond from the Greensboro Public Library. At the top of the bond, the groom's name was first listed as Holliday, which was then crossed out, and Henderson inserted. In the body of the bond itself is stated "that whereas the above bound John Holliday hath made application for a license for a Marriage to be Celebrated bet[ween] him & Anne Cahoon. A bond WAS issued for John Holladay and Anne Cahoun on July 20. I can only imagine what caused the clerk to make this error, but it obviously IS an error and there is no reason to assume that James Henderson was ever married to Anne Cahoon, given the obvious errors on the marriage bond and the testimony of two close relatives to the contrary. Don't ever trust transcriptions to establish anything important in your family tree. Too often what is basically a falsified record ends up in publication. A transcription is good for a finding aid, but that's all.

I am interested in this family because his son, George Henderson b. Jan 28 1894, provided information on my Diehl family that was published in J. W. Jordan's "Colonial Families of Philadelphia." If there is a family connection, I would appreciate hearing from you. I can provide a lot of early Henderson information, but I need to contact descendants of young George Henderson. After that you can trace the children through the continuing census records. I have found two separate marriage records for this Thomas Henderson and the census records do back up the info. First to a Sarah/Sally Rigney and second to a Matilda Brown. The first marriage was in Lawrence County and I can't remember if the second was in Lawrence or Gallia County, but it was one of the two. Hope this helps. Try the Lawrence Register for more info. They have census indexes you can look at for free. Also the Scioto County resources list some Lawrence County information. Good luck.
