I have found Mattie and her husband Joseph, a farmer, in the 1850 Census for Tuscaloosa County, AL. They are in Township 19. Both born SC. Joseph is 70, Mattie (Martha) is 50. Also in the household are John, 18, a farmer, Eliza, 14, and Henry, 10. They are listed as Hitton, not Helton. Sone Allen R. Helton (Hitton) is nearby with his wife Martha, and children Sarah, John & Martha. 2. I’m estimating Josepth's death between 1850 and 1860 because he does not show up on the 1860 Census, and Martha is living with son Allen & family. 3. Jospeh & Mattie started in SC, moved to GA between 1831 & 1836, moved to AL before 1840, based on chlidren’s ages and birthplaces. 4. Elizabeth is married to Blakely Eddins, and they live in the next town over. She is 22 in the 1850 Census, cannot read or write, born GA. More as I get it.
