These further comments are based on an e-mail message I received last week from another correspondent: In the first post I mentioned the folks living with Clinton Corley in 1860. The 1860 Census for Clinton Corley was taken on July 20. There's Allen Helton, 36, born SC, and his wife Martha Helton, 33, and their son, Jack, 17. (Jack is a nickname for John) and their daughter Martha, 10. In the same 1860 household there's John Helton, 27, born SC, and his wife Emily, 31, born SC, and their daughter Ann, 3. And then Martha Helton, 70, born SC. Meanwhile-- In 1860 Blakely & Elizabeth Eddins were living on the East Side, Cahaba River, Six Mile P.O. Two households away, lo and behold, are J. H. Helton born GA and his wife Emily and A. Sarah. This is on July 25, 1850. And-- In the 1880 Census Allen Helton, born GA, is living in Bibb County, is living with his daughter Martha, born AL, in Randolph, Bibb County. In 1870 J. H. Helton is living with his Emily in Colbert County, AL. They eventually had two daughters named Elizabeth (born May 1867) and Mattie (born 1873). The reasons I believe there is a connection among the households are: 1. Kin often lived near each other so as to offer support. 2. I believe that 1860 Martha Helton aged 70 who was living with ol' Clint is the Mattie Helton living with my ggggrandfather Blakely Eddins and his wife Elizabeth Helton born GA in 1880. Mattie was listed as 92 in 1880--a small difference in age, maybe, but not necessarily a problem. 3. Elizabeth's birthplace is listed in one census as SC, in most censuses as GA, just like Allen's and John's. 4. Mattie is a common nickname for Martha. 5. Family names are often passed down, ESPECIALLY in my familly--here we have several J. (or Johns), Marthas, Matties, and Elizabeths. 6. Elizabeth and Blakely had several children, among whom were Eliza E. and John H. Eddins. 7. Both families show Matties and Elizabeths. If we follow this logic, then Martha/ Mattie Helton was born about 1788 in GA or SC. She and husband (John or Allen or Joe) born GA, had several children, including Allen, born about 1824 in GA; Elizabeth, born about 1826 in GA or SC; and J. H, born about 1831 in GA. Did J. H and Emily had a child named Ann or A. Sarah born abut 1856? Add to that John H. Helton, born 1831, and Emily, born 1829 (?) and the names Elizabeth and Mattie, and there seems strong circumstantial evidence that there is a connection. One thing confuses me, though--in 1860 John and Emily Helton & daughter Ann are living with Clinton Corley on July 20 on the East Side Cahaba River. John and Emily Helton and daughter A. Sarah are ALSO found living in their own household on the East Side Cahaba River on July 25. Wha' s going on????? I just think there are too many similar elements to dismiss a connection. Anybody have any comments?
