Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/IMi.2ACEB/1069.3.2.1 Message Board Post: Bobbie would you be so kind to give me the documentation you have on Elijah & Louisa with Elijah being the son of Elisha Helton & Esther Osburne. I can not find a marriage record in Harlan Co. for a Elisha marrying a Esther Osburne. Of course they could have easily gotten married somewhere else. One other thing that a lot of people have problems with in the Helton family. There were two Elisha Heltons who married two Hester Osburn's. Researchers have, for years, not been able to distinguish between these two families so they lump them all together. In 1854 a Elisha Helton married a Hester Osburn. A copy of this marriage record is in Book 1 page 334 at Harlan Court House. In 1874 a Elisha Helton married a Hester Osburn. A copy of this marriage record is in Book A page 184. Another thing that mess a lot of researchers of the Helton family is that in one census a person will be listed as Elijah and in the next census he will be listed as Elisha. Randy Oplinger

I forgot about this post. Since then I have made the connection to Billy to his father Carlo! Letty's maiden name was CRAWFORD, Carlo's mother's maiden name was VAUGHN, they were living with them at that time and someone made the mistake as to putting Vaughn instead of Crawford! Thru my research my line is as follows: John Helton / Barbara Shephard Elisha Helton/ Esther "Hetty" Osbourne Elijah Helton / Louisa Vaughn Carlo W. Helton / Letty Crawford Billy Helton / Charlotte Burke (my grandparents) I have a copy of the marriage cert. for Carlo & Letty but never got a chance to get Billy's birth certificate yet. Thanks for the #'s. The name Aaron is a speculation from others, I too have yet to find a link to this name! There was a few Elijah Helton's at the time frame of mine & yours, but I now have it documented that my Elijah b/ May 1861 married Louisa Vaughn in 1881 and had 3 children: Carlo, Camile & Ida. and his parents were Elisha Helton & Esther Osbourne. Thanks for your help!! Very much appreciated.... Bobbie

Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/IMi.2ACEB/1069.3 Message Board Post: Bobbie the birth records of State of KY list the mother with her maiden name. You are correct that your grandfather was a son of Luty Vaughn in the birth records. He is listed as Billie Helton in these records. If you get his birth certificate. His father's name should be on it. His birth certificate number is 44497 & it can be found in Volume #089. In the Helton marriage record index of Harlan Co., KY you will find that Carlow Helton married Letty Crawford in 1903. You will find a cpy of the marriage record in Book 1 on page 242 at the Harlan Court House. I can not find a marriage record for a Carlo Helton to Luty Vaughn in Harlan Co.. I have this Carlo(w) Helton's lineage as Elijah, Robert, John. I don't have the Aaron Helton you mentioned. Where did you get that? I need that for my Helton tree if you have it as confirmed information. The 1900 Annonated Harlan Co. census lists Carlo Helton living in the household of his parents, Elija Helton & Louisa Vaughn in the Wallins Creek District. Shown as siblings of Carlo are Camile age 14 & Idie B. age 8. Carlo is shown as 16 yrs. old & b. Sept 1883. Elijah's parents are listed in this census as Robert Helton & Lucretia Slusher. Elijah is a brother to my wife Sherry's ggrandmother Sylvania Helton. Feribe Helton Vaughn is the mother of the above Elijah Helton's wife Louisa Vaughn & Feribe's husbands name is James Vaughn. Hopefully some of this might help you. At least I do hope I have not cornfussed you with the above info. Randy Oplinger

Lillian is a small community on the west side of Perdido Bay where Hwy 98 crosses the bay; the bridge is called the Lillian Bridge. There is a Lillian Church and Lillian Elementary School about a half mile north of Hwy 98. About 4.5 miles west of the bay is county road 97 which goes south to Perdido Beach. "Place Names in Alabama", Virginia O. Foscue, gives Perdido Bay as being named abt. 1512 by one of Ponce de Leon's explorers. The word is the past participle of "to lose" in Spanish; maybe they were lost or had been lost. 1930 Escambia Co., FL census, p. 223, Millview precinct, a Chester of the right age: Helton, John F. 64m Rebecca 63f Chester 12m nephew Modeste 9f niece (could this be Maude?) Look up Charles Mose Helton in the family trees at Ancestry.com; says he was married to Bessie Lee Skillman. Then check out Membrance Helton on this message board; Henry Co., AL and Covington Co., AL are mentioned and an Indian heritage. Membrance bought land in Covington Co. I didn't see a record in Henry Co. He is in Santa Rosa Co., FL in 1880 living with a son named Jason. 1910 census for people I think are members of the above: p.43 Escambia Co., FL, precinct 3: John W. & Charles M.; this John looks like it could be George!! p.31 Escambia Co., FL, precinct 2: John F., wife Rebecca If you think this is your Helton family, I will be glad to e-mail images of the census. Genealogy is a hobby after 10 years of tracing family history. The Helton family is a great family to research; they have spunk and fire in the belly. I have copies of court records from Lumpkin Co., GA of a James Helton tried for murder. Abraham Helton, my wife's most ancient ancestor so far, drew land in the Ga lottery as a Rev. soldier; I later found records where it was claimed he was neither white nor married and his land grant was revoked.. Calvin Helton, another of my sife's ancestors and also named as Bark Chicken in the court record, was tried for stealing the horse of Gen. Eli McConnell. Gen. McConnell's house still stands in Cherokee Co., GA and he had a mill near it. I have walked on the foundations of a mill he later bought which made rope from cotton fiber. In the Atlanta Constitution I found a James Helton of Carroll Co., GA who put a sheet over him to scare a black man and! was knifed to death by the man. Also in Carroll Co., Ga, a Burnadette Helton shot an occupying soldier who was entering her house during Reconstruction (after the Civil War, you know, the Destruction of the South). She was later pardoned by Gov. Smith (I think I have the Governor's name right) saying she acted under duress and also noting that she was the only white woman held in the Ga. State Penitentiary at the time. E-mail me at l_cotton@netzero.net or L50cotton@aol.com if you would like further assistance or just more tidbits. Dahlonega was a Cherokee word meaning yellow or yellow rock; Dahlonega, GA was the site of America's first gold rush. Lanny Cotton
