    3. Dear Listers: When was the last time YOU contributed to the content of the lists you are subscribed to? If you want to get mail, you must first write mail! If you are not sure when the last time you posted was, you can check via searching on your email address using the Interactive Archives for any of the lists: http://searches2.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/listsearch.pl type the name of the list you want to search in the box marked "Name of List" type your email address in the box marked "query" select which year you want to search by clicking the radio button next to the year 2002, 2001, 2000. etc click the search button. You can only search one year at a time. You may be surprised to discover how long it has been since you posted! I recently began to check against subscribers to one of my newly adopted lists. I am always amazed to find people subscribed to lists, hoping for a genealogical connection, but NEVER having posted a single message. If this sounds like you.... take the plunge. Send a query to the list. Depending on the range of topics allowed -- send a message that would be of interest to the group. The most frequent remark I get in response to my unsubscription questionnaire, is that the person did not connect with someone on the list. The second most frequent response is that the lists -- all of them -- are heavily laden with American topics. If one expects to connect, they must work at putting something on the list(s) to let your cousins know you are here and waiting for them! And you must do so with some regularity. One time a year won't do it. One time a quarter would be an improvement over annually, but still may not be enough contact. Those other-than-American researchers that don't see enough content from Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Ireland, Scotland, etc. need to remain vocal on the list(s). If you don't speak up, and remain an active participant then when someone from the area of your interest subscribes, they will not feel there is anyone to connect with. Invite your fellow researchers from your area or area of interest to subscribe to the Rootsweb lists. A reminder to most of my lists --- keep in mind that there is a world wide audience that can and does view all of Rootsweb's lists. When writing your messages and mentioning geographic locations, PLEASE spell them out. Cite the City/County/Province/State AND the Country. Do not use postal codes as identifiers. They are only about 30 years old and are not recognizable on a global basis. Check your queries to see if they are ridden with them and use the search and replace function of your word processor to quickly expand them to the actual names. Do not make the assumption that others are familiar with the geography of your area of research. Not sure what lists you are subscribed to? Visit: http://passwordcentral.rootsweb.com/ If list traffic is heavier than you prefer, consider switching to the digest mode. This puts several messages into one email rather than sending each one individually. This is especially helpful with very busy lists. Looking forward to seeing an increase in posts on all of the lists. Happy Hunting! 3. First let me say this is not my line but as my Heck's came to Montgomery County by 1811 (Peter Heck and family) I have been interested. Therefore I have not verified all the information I have on this line. E-mail me direct at thehecks@iland.net and I'll give you someone to contact and any thing else I can. John, who married Nancy Bachman, was the son of Abraham Heck and his second wife Elizabeth Urmey. Abraham was born in Virginia about 1804 and died in Montgomery Co.,OH on 23 Aug 1881. Abraham was the son of John and Catherine Heck who bought land in Montgomery Co in 1809. John died in 1810 but the estate was not settled until all children came of age. John and Catherine are believed to be the ones who co-owned land with "Daniel David" Heck in Rockbridge Co., VA which they sold in 1805. A. J. Heck ----- Original Message ----- From: "George H. 3. Evening to all. I am new to these lists and am researching my ex-wife's ancestors to complete a family history for my children. I have just recently learned that she descends from this couple through their son John Heck and appears no one has this line as of yet. With the help of messages on the rootsweb lists, the family trees already posted to rootsweb and ancestry, and looking at the census data online I have put together the following line starting with John and Nancy (Bachman) Heck. Children of John Heck and Nancy Bachman 1. Joseph F. Heck 2. Perry Heck 3. Warner/Vernon ??? Heck (1880 Census Lists Warner 1900 Census shows Vernon could be either because of the hand writing skills of the census taker) 4. John H. Heck 5. Charles William Heck 6. Howard Heck 7. Oliver Sylvester Heck My children descend from Oliver Sylvester and Olive (Ollie) Heck. I noticed that many people are missing the last two children of John and Nancy. Not sure why this is. John and brother Charles is listed on the 1930 Census with Oliver, Ollie, and their son Richard J. Heck. Hope this closes some holes in the family. Now for a couple of questions? Does anyone have any idea how to find the marriage date of Oliver and Ollie (maiden name unknown)? I believe Ollie's parents would have probably had to give permission for their marriage as she was only 16 at the time of their marriage as listed on the 1930 census. Also any help with this family would be greatly appreciated. George Drennon Sr.

I also have Heck's in Detroit, but have not run across Elmer Hugo Heck, that I can remember. The early Heck's in Detroit, belonged to St. John's Evangelical Church, at 2120 Russell St., Detroit, Michigan. Which is now St. John's-St. Luke Evangelical Church, the two churches combined. My grandmother was Florence Anna Heck, married in Detroit on 04 Dec 1912, but was married in her parents home. If I remember right, some of the Heck's ran a boarding house in Detroit too. Do you have any other info on Elmer? Was he born in Detroit? Most of the early Detroit Heck's are buried in Elmwood Cemetery. It's possible your Elmer might be related to my line in some manner. Drop me a line when you have the time........ Mike in Reno, Nevada

There is no date of marriage just the year but I am hoping the contact name came give you more information. I suggest you e-mail him as he may be able to help you. 1. [HECK] Virus concerns on Rootsweb Lists
    2. Travis LeMaster
    3. Virus, Trojans, Worms RootsWeb's mailing lists are filtered and attachments are removed. A virus that is distributed as an attachment will not reach you through a RootsWeb mailing list. New virus, trojans, or worms are constantly being found, along with older version that are still being circulated. A good virus protection software can be invaluable, providing you keep it updated. It is impossible for us to list the thousands of versions here, so we encourage you to refer to the Web sites of companies that list the current versions - especially if you believe you have received a new version. These are a few of the sites, including one that will do an online check of your computer (the first one). http://housecall.antivirus.com/pc_housecall/ http://www.symantec.com/avcenter/ http://www.stanford.edu/group/partners/hoaxes.shtml http://kumite.com/myths/ http://www.mcafee.com/centers/anti-virus/default2.asp http://www.europe.f-secure.com/v-descs/newapt.htm What can you do? Protect yourself by never opening an attachment from someone you do not know, or that look suspicious, and keep your virus protection software updated (check for updates periodically, and anytime you have heard of a new virus). If an unexpected attachment comes from someone you do know, write to confirm they sent the attachment prior to opening it. If you receive an e-mail that appears to come from RootsWeb (other than a mailing list digest), and there is an attachment of any kind, don't open it. If you feel the attachment is legitimate, use your virus protection software to check that the file isn't infected. The newest varieties of virus', trojans, and worms, will appear to come from someone you know (such as RootsWeb), or have a file name that would make it look legitimate. Don't assume that because you know the sender, or that because the subject line or file name appears to be legitimate that it is safe - if it is infected, those fields will be forged to appear legitimate. Remember, if you do not open attachments, you substantially reduce the chances of becoming infected with a virus. Delete it. Then empty the trash bin to make sure it is gone. If you are using an e-mail program that stores attachments elsewhere on your computer, such as Eudora, find it there and delete it, too.
