Here is a link to several BBC News reports on DNA studies going on in Wales, suggesting that the Welsh could be the most ancient in the British Isles (due to their land-locked location - mountain barriers). http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-wales-18489735 Be sure to also see the related article links at the bottom of the page! Thanks for the link. I was working up a program on DNA for my local gen society for Jan 3 and this comes in handy. There are many great links on the Internet. Just Google terms such as Genome, gene, base pair, DNA, RNA, etc. There was a study out that from 1% to 4% of our DNA is from Neanderthal. There were only a few specimens, so it is statistically weak. For many years, it was assumed that we had no DNA from Neanderthal. Over 90% of our DNA is the same as Chimpanzees. I don’t know if that 4% Neanderthal is of the total or of the less than 10% which was thought to be uniquely human. That makes a big difference. When you considered that just going back 5 generations, you have 32 ancestors. If one of those was a full blooded Neanderthal, you could have 3.125% Neanderthal genes even if the other 31 had zero Neanderthal genes. It is a lot to wrap your mind around. This Welsh DNA study really brings to life the potential for adding to our historical knowledge by analyzing DNA. There was another story about a body found buried in a peat bog in England which was about 2000 years old and very well preserved. They tested local kids in schools but none were related. Then they tested a teacher who was from another part of England and he was related. England was conquered and the population altered many times in the last 2000 years. Don’t forget the WVU game today.
