    3. Dave Kuhl brought up a matter to me that I keep forgetting about - that all our HCGS chatter goes into an online archive.  Anybody can read it - forever and ever.   I didn't realize that until  I googled my own name a couple years ago!    What a surprise!!!     Is there any reason why we just can't be part of a regular email "LIST" in which we can simply  "REPLY TO ALL"  to communicate?   Why use Rootsweb if we don't have to?     Our conversations would be private.  Well, except for NSA snooping and scooping :):)  (Sorry, I couldn't resist!)      If we did decide to go the private route - we would each need to have a HCGS LIST in our "Contacts" in order to initiate a conversation.  I'm sure some smart person could send instructions on how to ADD the HCGS List to our contacts.     Maybe I've forgotten the reason why we originally chose to use Rootsweb to communicate.... someone remind me.     <Sharon><

    3. HCGS member Larry Francis may be the most knowledgeable on these Rootsweb server lists since he manages a list for Fauquier County, VA.   As I understand it, Ruby is the authorized gatekeeper and can approve new member access to the list or take away access for members who have not paid their dues.  She may have limited capability to authorize attachments or bigger messages to go through.  But she can’t go into the archives to delete junk, bad e-mail addresses, etc.   Sue Moore has similar gatekeeper control over the HCGS Yahoo group.  As far as I know, there is no archive for the Yahoo list.    It might put a damper on the chit chat to know that our silly comments on rats and roaches are being archived forever.   The archives can always be mined for data and sift through it to find some gems.  However, the more junk that is saved, the harder it will be to find the gems.  If we could delete the junk, who should do it and is it worth the effort?   It can be embarrassing to have mistakes come back to you years later.  For example, I was researching my Kuhl family from census back in the 1980s.  I did not find the children of two of the brothers, so I assumed they moved west.  The reason that I was not finding them was because they changed their names to Cole but stayed in the area.  I still see an occasional reference on line that they moved west.  The only people who don’t make mistakes are the people who don’t do anything.  However, it would be nice to go back and correct some of those errors.      Most of us have similar experiences where we “took off after a wild goose”, made some erroneous observations and then those got repeated by others.  Those are the times when you are glad that no one gave your name as the source of the bad information.      Dave Kuhl 210 Glen Eagles Drive Ocean Springs, MS 39564-9041 e-mail: dbkuhl@bellsouth.net >________________________________ > From: Sharon Bramhall <sharon.bramhall@yahoo.com> >To: "hcgs@rootsweb.com" <hcgs@rootsweb.com> >Sent: Friday, June 14, 2013 11:07 AM >Subject: [HCGS] privacy and online archives > > >Dave Kuhl brought up a matter to me that I keep forgetting about - that all our HCGS chatter goes into an online archive. Well, except for NSA snooping and scooping :):)  (Sorry, I couldn't resist!)    >  >If we did decide to go the private route - we would each need to have a HCGS LIST in our "Contacts" in order to initiate a conversation.  I'm sure some smart person could send instructions on how to ADD the HCGS List to our contacts.   >  >Maybe I've forgotten the reason why we originally chose to use Rootsweb to communicate.... someone remind me.   >  ><Sharon><    > >------------------------------- >To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to HCGS-request@rootsweb.com with the word 'unsubscribe' without the quotes in the subject and the body of the message > > >

    3. Sharon Because Rootsweb started out in the mid 1990's as with the slogan -- Genealogy should be Free. People were cads if they didn't share... Then Roots web was free.. then genealogy supercompanies starting buying server space because no one would donate to keep the free systems going, then the companies tried to sell the free information, which gave them a black eye-------- funny thing--- is black eyes are only temporary. Imagine going a driect email oon all the genalogy lists- you'd have a problem as a spammer-- Paul Pettit On 6/14/2013 9:07 AM, Sharon Bramhall wrote: > Dave Kuhl brought up a matter to me that I keep forgetting about - that all our HCGS chatter goes into an online archive. 3. Although I do not have the answer to this issue, I do think that this is a good conversation to have. I have always believed in being very cautious about the internet. I try only to use words and photos that I wouldn't mind being read and seen by anyone in any generation forever. We shouldn't have any illusions of anything else. So, at this time I would like to give a shout out to my great-great-great-grandchild. Thank you for continuing my work! 3. I just googled my name and several emails through the Rootsweb members only list were there.  So everything that is being said on here is not private. I will definitely be more careful about what I say.
