Greetings from the warm and sunny and snow free Mississippi Gulf Coast. My local society had our Christmas dinner meeting last night at a local restaurant. I had a seafood platter. Everything was locally caught and it was excellent. I brought half of it home in a takeout box. I had oysters, shrimp, crab, broiled red fish, a baked potato and a salad. And no BP oil!! We were swapping tall tales about our ancestors. I told about Penelope Stout who was scalped by Indians. (I avoided the gruesome details while we were eating.) A lady told about being descended from Andrew Barnes who claimed to have shot Cornstalk. Another lady said that she was descended from Cornstalk. These ladies then got on their walkers and jousted with butter knives at three paces. Then they hugged and wished each other a Merry Christmas. (Just kidding about the jousting.) We had our annual election and installation of officers for the new year. I hold the records for having been president the most number of times. I managed to get other people to fill most of the offices. (It pays to be on the nominating committee.) I still have to do everything else: website, yearbook, newsletter, e-mail meeting notification, projects, etc. etc. We only lost one member to death this year. She had a heart valve replacement at the Cleveland Clinic. The surgery went fine but she caught pneumonia and died. Several other hospitals including the Mayo Clinic had refused to operate on her. We are like many organizations. Our members are getting older. We are not recruiting enough new members. We are down to about 35 local members and about 15 out of town with 20 to 25 attending monthly meetings and work shops. We lost about 6 members who moved away after Hurricane Katrina. I sat next to a retired marine LC. I’ll probably help him with his memoirs. One of the men in his unit in Korea was the son of Allen Dulles. He was hit in the head with shrapnel and is still living in a hospital in Switzerland. (Allen Dulles was the head of the CIA. His brother John Foster Dulles was Secretary of State.) These stories should not be lost to history. Dave Kuhl 210 Glen Eagles Drive Ocean Springs, MS 39564-9041 e-mail: [email protected]
Dave - say hi to all the Seabees down there in Gulfpoot. I'll have to look you up the next time I'm there (I've been a Seabee since 1967, and am now the Vice Chairman of the Board for the Seabee Memorial Scholarship Association - we have about 100 children of Seabees on $1,700 scholarships each year) Jim - Sent from my iPhone - FaceTime! Cool. I'll be here. My wife has a lot of health problems, so I am tied down giving her shots, etc. She does not want to travel. So, most of my "travel" is on the internet. I did a program in November on DNA. How is your DNA project doing? Enjoyed your remarkable account! Somehow I had forgotten that you lived on the gulf. By the time I finished reading your news, I could smell the ocean and seafood. That was delightful reading! Thanks for sharing... I send greetings from the north coast and Cleveland. - Sharon ________________________________ From: Dave Kuhl <[email protected]> To: hcgs <[email protected]> Sent: Fri, December 3, 2010 12:13:07 PM Subject: [HCGS] Greetings Greetings from the warm and sunny and snow free Mississippi Gulf Coast.
