    1. Re: [HCGS] [HCPD] Revolutionary War--questions, need help
    2. How do you find some one who was said to have fought in the Revolutionary War who may have died in the war? Especially when you have no information such as correct spelling of the name or exact location? This is lengthy so please bear with me. According to family notes my 3rd great grandfather came from Germany and was in America in time to have fathered a son, born according to 1850 census records, in 1769 near Hagerstown, MD. and to have fought "under Washington." The family "after Penn made a treaty with the Indians, located near Gettysburg. Later came across Braddock's old road to around Morgantown." Not sure of the sequence of the events. Brothers George (my ggg grandfather) and Frederick STEORTS / STORTS / STEORTZ / STOTZ / STOTS / STURTZ, etc came from Germany together. I always thought they arrived in Philadelphia but lately found a note that said they came into New York. George was a carpenter and Frederick was a machinist. This seems to be one of the more difficult German names. But there was enough specific information in the partial notes I have that I feel they are true. His son George STEORTS / STORTS / STOTS shows up on land purchases in 1816 at the Lewis / Harrison County border along what is now Rt. 19 just north of Jane Lew, WV. In 1827 he married Eunice Bailey Stalnaker, widow of John Whitman Stalnaker by whom she had five children. She was the daughter of Minter Bailey, Sr. who bought land next door in about 1807, the same land where Indians earlier killed Thomas Hughes and a Lowther. George and Eunice had six children, three girls and three sons, one died in the Civil War. George was 58 and Eunice (poor woman!) was 36 when they married. So George may have had another family earlier that I have not found either. In Mary Jackson's mother's journal (she was a connection through the Cookman family) she notes that the parents of "Jane Lew" George were Frederick and Ann. ???? There was a Frederick STORTS who died in 1783 in Bedford / Fulton Co. PA who was a Lt. in the PA militia during the war. He appears to not have had children but had a stepson Peter Swartzwelder (sp??) who married Mary STORTS. In Frederick's will he leaves items to his nephew George STORTS and niece Charlotte, children of an unnamed brother. I'm only guessing that George may have died in the war. If this Frederick STORTS was the brother then it makes since that he would leave something to his brother's children for whom he may have served as a guardian. I started a STORTS DNA Project but so far only two STAATS cousins have found each other and did not show a connection to the STEORTS / STORTS family. The tombstone of Eunice Bailey Stalnaker Steorts in Broad Run Cemetery says STEORTS one of two surviving sons who went to Missouri in the 1850s used STORTS. So many questions!! Any help appreciated. My gggggrandfather was one of the men that was dropped from the pension rolls because of Singleton's investigation. I just returned from DC with copies of his papers. The National Archives does not have in his pension file documentation where he applied. The only documents were the form of how much he was entitled to receive, Singleton's notes where he stated my ancestor should not receive a pension, and letters from my family attempting to clear my ancestor's name. One of the papers in the file states "see Virginia Agency Book". Any idea what this is or where I could find it? Also, is there anywhere else I can look for his statement on when he applied? Could this be in a state or federal court record book? Any suggestions are welcome. Kathy McCann Keyser ------Original Message------ From: N.A. 3. I have German roots and am wondering if you've seen the name with an umlaut over the O (the two dots)? If so, when they Americanized the name they took away the two dots and added an E after the O. So it would be spelled Stoerts. Another spelling for you to check!
