Our weather is beautiful but a little warm. 91 yesterday in Bridgeport and 90 today so far, but I had to mow the lawn. Also working on my garden so didn't make the meeting this morning. The Harrison County Genealogical Society Web Site has been updated for June 1st and Ruby's notes for today's meeting. All the best, Dick Web Master http://www.wvhcgs.com
West Virginia will be celebrating its 150th birthday this year. On TV they have been announcing about rallying around the flag at the Waldomore on the 8th of June; however they did not give a time. If you go to www.wvharrisoncountywv.com and click on the program about the 150th anniversary you will be able to find out what will be going on that day. The time is 11:00 a.m. There will be different events going on all over West Virginia. Happy Birthday West Virginia Ruby
The Harrison County Genealogical Society held their regular monthly meeting this date with 8 members and 4 guests in attendance. It was good to have Bob Blankenship back with us from Ohio. David said the genealogy class was well attended on the 23rd of May. It was sponsored by the LDS, DAR, SAR and the HCGS. He said there were 58 persons in attendance and that Mr. Bob Fish was dressed as a Va Militia Officer. The picnic was discussed and it will be held in the Maple Shelter at Norwood Park on the 12th of August at 5:00 P.M. Susan House will be helping Diana with it this year. It was announced that Janet Pratt will be taking over as editor of the newsletter and she needs to get together with Diana Johnson so she can get things set up with Pre Sort out of Fairmont to mail the newsletters. Janet was not at the meeting today. Kristen Haggerty from Lincoln High School was one of the winners of the scholarships and she was in attendance with her parents Allen and Lori Haggerty along with her grandmother Sandra Haggerty. She will be attending West Liberty College in Wheeling and will be studying chemistry and wants to teach or maybe work for the FBI. The other winner was Lauren McCarthy from Bridgeport High School but she was unable to attend the meeting today. David said the roof is just about done and that we should be able to meet upstairs on the 2nd floor at the July meeting. David bought a book on the VA Militia of 1812. Harold Reed had a clipping out of the Ritchie County paper and I did not get the date of the article. He would like to know if anyone knows the lady in the article. It is Kathy Reed a member of the Ohio Valley Chapter, NS-DAR & State Chairman of Genealogy Preservation. David gave an interesting talk about the Revolution War pensioners. The next meeting will be held on July 6th. Ruby Casto Membership Chairman of HCGS
This is the reminder of the regular monthly meeting of the Harrison County Genealogical Society. It will be tomorrow morning, June 1st, at 10:00 a.m. on the 2nd floor of the Waldomore. Ruby

Pam & Mike, Thanks for the Cunningham obit. As you mentioned there are a lot of Cunningham's in WV and surrounding states. I hope it was helpful to someone. Ruby

The sources for the information displayed are listed at the end of each file. The display typically goes down one generation into collateral families where the daughter marries someone with a different last name. In those cases, to see the next generation, you would need to go to a different file for that new surname for that daughter’s husband to find additional information. The files are free and open to the pubic and have been since the early 1990s. That means that there has been a lot of opportunity for public scrutiny, update and correction. Anyone researching in this geographic area should make these files a first stop. Go to: http://hackerscreek.com/cpage.php?pt=262 Scroll down to the bottom. Click on A-M or N-Z for the subject surname. Then click on the subject name. If there are multiple files with that same surname, search them all to find your subject family. I recommend that you copy each file of interest and save it on your hard drive. If you then open it in Microsoft Word, you can use the “Find” feature to more quickly locate the subject individuals. You can also add notes at the beginning of the file such as the web address where you found the file, the date copied, etc. I set up a “Surnames” directory of folders labeled A thru Z on my computer. I copy the Norman files for each of my families. I also copy each file, mark it up and send the corrections and updates to Don. The time cycle for update and republishing may take three years because Don has to wait for the HCPD webmaster to make the update. Everyone involved is a volunteer, so be patient. Save copies of your work and check back in six months or so. Most of these files were compiled by Don from multiple sources but not necessarily researched by Don. It is your responsibility as a user of these files to contribute corrections and updates. Don is a retired fireman. It is not his responsibility to research your family. It is your responsibility. Don just provides a vehicle for display and referees disputes. History: I have never met Don in person but we have been communicating since the mid 80s. We met through the Patchwork Quilt genealogy column in the WV Hillbilly newspaper and worked on the History of Gilmer County published about 1989. I am proud to say that I have contributed on many families and that you will see many listings of my contributions in the references at the end of Don’s files. We use to exchange stacks of 5 ¼ floppy disks in the mail which was well before the Internet became to be in common use. I mentioned refereeing disputes. I have a cousin who believed the myths published in four books that our common line was descended from a Rev War General. Just a reminder to those in reach of Waldomore in downtown Clarksburg that tomorrow evening at seven we'll be hosting a Genealogy Seminar. Bob Fish and Christina Rumback are doing presentations. I'll be on hand, and we'll try to have the West Virginia Room in manageable shape (despite the ongoing roof replacement) for those who might wish to pay it a visit. So... W.Va. Room, 5:00 - 7:00 Seminar, 7:00 - 9:00 Come one, come all. David Houchin CHPL HCGS David
Tornado news If you are following the news, analyst are predicting what was the worst tornado in history with winds over 300 mph has just torn through south of OK City. Our only HCGS member who lives in OK, Billie Jo Runyon, has checked in and she is OK. No reports of deaths. Two schools destroyed. Fires are burning out of control. It looks terrible from the helicopter views. More tornadoes are being tracked. Thousands of homes have been destroyed. 15 children are trapped under debris. Eva, I think you should go and represent your relative if she can't go. HCGS gives a $500.00 scholarship each year and when interest rates were higher we would give more than one. I don't know who won the scholarship this year as I didn't stay and read the stories we got in. I will know at the meeting on the 1st of June. Where does Kristen Haggerty go to school? HCGS doesn't have anyone go to the schools to represent us so don't know what Genealogy Society it would be. We just have the recipient come to a meeting at the Waldomore. David, She has sent me her lineage I have a list but some no dates or marriages. She is trying to join the Daughters of the Confederates. I have been helping this Lady for a few years on her Flesher line, she descendant of Henry Flesher the founder of Weston, WV. She is planning a trip to WV in the fall to meet with me and I am doing some leg work {so to speak} for her. I asked Dave Kuhl, since I know he has a Arnold line if he had anything on Laura, I found about her today at the Library in the book "The Family and Early Life of Stonewall Jackson. Nancy Jackson also has information in her book on Edward Jackson. I will see what else she wants me to do. Thanks for the help I may need it before I am though, I think the main interest is that two Flesher' s married Edward Jackson's daughters. And they are Stonewall's Aunts. Louise It sounds like you have a fabulous collection of information. I wish that I could get away and come visit you. Back to 800??? Unfortunately, my wife’s health problems keep me tied up here. I have not been back to WV since 2005. One of my wife’s sons has been promising to take some time off from his work and come and stay with his mother and give me a break from my nursing duties. He does contract computer work in New York City. He recently installed Windows 7 for the New York City Police Dept. Every time he gets ready to take some time off another big job comes along. Maybe you can get together with David Houchin and share what you have. The only way to share it with the entire HCGS family is to get it organized in some computer presentation. A pedigree chart or register format would be good choices. Now that the weather is better, maybe you can drive over to Clarksburg and meet with some folks there. Your collection would make some great articles for the HCGS newsletter or the HCGS website. HCPD is another option. It sounds like a lot of typing might be needed. I would hate to put that burden on Eva Newlon. Maybe she can line up some volunteers to help copy what you have. Do you know David Armstrong? He works out of Buckhannon and might be talked into doing something with your research. He recently published on the railroads in the area. There is a group which meets once a month at the Belington library. It might be worth a visit there. The head of the library there seems to be very supportive of genealogy. I don’t know if there are any volunteers at ARFHS in Beverly who could help. But, that is another option. Is there a functioning group in Marion County? If I did not live 1,000 miles away, I would be banging on your door tomorrow.
