    1. [HCGS] A couple notes from "The Rending of Virginia, A History, By Granville Hall
    2. >From a letter of Mrs. Elizabeth Nay of Princeton, Ill, to the Shinnston, (W. Va.) News: "Since my old school mate, G. D. Hall, has written "Daughter of the Elm, I have been transported in my mind back to the old home many times. My father was the old ferryman in Mr. Hall's Book. And when the evening mail brought the eagerly looked for "Daughter of the Elm, " I soon became oblivious to about everything else until its pages were all perused-before retiring. Rev. Leroy F. Fortney, Plainfield, Vt. I think I recognize most of the characters who are given fictitious names and personally acquainted with some of them as well as nearly all of those whom real names are given. I was born in '60 and did not know--------,---------and some of the others, but the incidents, or similar ones, I have heard spoken of at home in a kind of traditionary manner. ________(George Holmes) was a cousin of my mother's and Uncle Andy-----(Morrow) is my great uncle. "Old Black Joe," Daddy Long's servant, lived for several years on my father's farm. I was well acquainted with -------. My father owns and has lived on the Old Higginbotham farm adjoining Peter B. Righter's place since '71. Capt. John Righter owns a mill just below Worthington. I wish to congratulate you on your book. It will certainly reach a great sale. I do not pretend to be a critic but it seems to me to contain all the element of a successful story. L.E. Strum, Waverly, Ohio

    1. [HCGS] A little more on the "Big Elm"
    2. Hello to all. I promised to write a bit more so here goes, I received this letter in 1999 from Miss Alveta Arcuri in Fairmont WV. She writes to me, "My brother Joseph, was a personal friend of Mr. Hall's widow. Before she died, she gave my brother the copyright and he had more books published and then when my brother died, it was given to me in his will." " I had more copies made and I sold them all (1500). I still get many calls for the book." My brother contacted an agency in Hollywood for a movie but never materialized. Sherry

    1. [HCGS] MEETING
    2. Casto, Ruby
    3. The Harrison County Genealogical Society, Clarksburg, WV held their meeting this morning and we had a good turnout of about 15 people even though it was cold. We had about 20 degrees this morning. We did receive the one new book which was ordered, Harrison County, WV marriages 1895-1912. Darrell said, he still only has around 20 people signed up for the trip to Richmond, VA. He is going to go ahead and make arrangements with the bus company and he will cancel if necessary. He will have the actual cost at the next meeting in April. He said, it probably should be about what it was the last time he checked. In the neighborhood of $60.00 to $75.00 and that is only for transportation and two nights lodging. Meals and anything else you might want to do you will be on your own. He must have 30 to 35 people going. The dates are September 17-19. The treasurer is going to order the the 34 rolls of the 1930 census for West Virginia. They are to be out in April. They will be a big asset to our collection at the Waldomore. I also mentioned someone redesigning the front cover for our newsletter. We have used that same cover for several years and I think it would be nice if it were redone. I'm sure someone will come up with something in the near future or at least I hope so. We also want to welcome our new member that was with us today, Esther Duncan of Bridgeport. Till next time. Ruby Casto Membership Chairman of HCGS

    3. Jean, I called the records room at the Harrison County Court House and they said for a will it is $1.50 for the first two pages and $1.00 for each additional page. But she also said if you were sending a check for a request for a will that you would need to send them $10.00. Harrison County Clerk 301 West Main Street Clarksburg, WV 26301 Hope this is the information that you needed. Ruby
