    1. [HCGS] *Daughter of the Elm Party - Tues. June 11*
    2. Hi Everyone! Seeing that there was so much interest in the Harrison County classic "Daughter of the Elm" - I just wanted to spread the word that Ross Ballard's audiobook is finally ready for distribution, and, that he is scheduled to have a CD release party at "The Waldomore" (Clarksburg library) on Tuesday, June 11th! (Call the library for the time.) For those who aren't familiar with "Daughter of the Elm" by G. Davisson Hall - the 1899 book was written as fiction, based loosely on fact, and real people of the area. (It was even banned for a while, I heard.) It's about an attempt to apprehend a fierce network of bandits, horse thieves, and murderers headquartered near the Big Elm (near Shinnston) in the pre-Civil War era. A romantic storyline involving "Lorraine" (the high-minded daughter of one of the hoodlums) and a young gang member, is woven throughout. If you've ever had a craving to hear impeccable English - Granville Davisson Hall's classic Victorian style grammar IS that! His command of the language is absolutely amazing, and Ross Ballard does his work credit in his reading. If you have an appreciation of art - you'll love the audio bookcover. It's a deep lavender with a band of muted yellows and features a picture of the Big Elm with an embedded oval of a young dark-haired, dark-eyed girl, representing "Lorraine" - the "Daughter of the Elm". It's a five hour listen - perfect for a five hour car trip. I don't have a CD player in my car, so I buckled up a boombox in the front seat beside me. When I got into the car & turned it on - I felt like I was climbing into a time machine, taking a trip back through time into old Harrison County. Ross effectively uses just enough sound effects and "voices" in certain places to add to the drama. He also uses an old-timey fiddler to slide in & out of chapters; the backporch style of the fiddler, in itself, adds to the homespun flavor. It was fun hearing familiar places mentioned, such as Sardis, Lumberport, Fairmont, Buckhannon, Parkersburg, Pittsburgh, "Worthlesston" (Worthington), and, my home, Despard - and trying to figure out the disguised family names, familiar to those of us who grew up in Harrison County. The prologue gives a glimpse of what became of the characters (fact? or fiction?).... and it made me want to know more of the actual characters. I strongly encourage as many as possible in the genealogical and historical circles to take the time to give a hardy Harrison County welcome to this young man, especially since his story involves a revival of a legendary book about our area. Not only should we encourage this kind of historical endeavor with genealogical threads, but this could also generate interest in HCGS itself and even for Harrison County tourism!! So, please drop by to show your support, and please pass the word. What an interesting gathering it would make for descendants of characters in the book to attend the party! Anyone else with nuggets of information stored away - this could be the time to share or exchange them with others. If anyone would like to contact Ross Ballard for questions or comments, his email address is listed at his website: http://newrivergorge.com/ My grandmother always said that a storm always goes around twice - and I've waited a long time for this piece of history and legend to come around again. <Sharon>< Sharon Sprouse Bramhall

    1. [HCGS] Rev. Joseph Blackwell Bailey, Harrison County
    2. Hi, I'm looking for a Bailey researcher with Rev. Joseph Blackwell Bailey in their line. He was born Sept. 15 , 1809 in Harrison County and died September 26, 1875 (if I have this correct). He married Mary Smith. He was a Baptist minister and farmer. I have him as the father of Elias J. Bailey b. 1834, father of Adolphus Bailey, my great grandfather. I am having information overload with the Carr Baileys and Minters. I have Joseph Bailey as the son of William Bailey and Mary Minter. Does anyone else have this? Please help me! 3. Christine, If you ask someone is DC it take 6-12 hours or more, but if you someone in West Virginia, it will take around 4 to 5 1/2 hours. The reason I said the above. I knew at different times, one person drove from DC to Morgantown and took around 12 hours which should have took 3 and this was last May. He was from California and ask someone in DC how to get to Morgantown. Guess what his trip was 3 hours back to DC. Another person this year ask someone in DC for directions to Buckhannon, and guess what it took several hours more than it should. -----Original Message----- From: Bryan Emond [mailto:emonds@earthlink.net] Sent: Saturday, May 04, 2002 9:05 PM To: HCGS-L@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [HCGS] MEETING Ruby, I assume you will be posting, by email, the information regarding the annual picnic. 1. [HCGS] MEETING
    2. Casto, Ruby
    3. Thanks to my good friend and member of HCGS, Barbara Hamilton, I did make it to the meeting this morning. She even took me upstairs in the elevator as I have 11 more days before I can do several steps. We really had good attendance today. There were 17 in attendance. We want to thank Barbara Hamilton and Dottie Riffle for doing the 2001 obits. They did the whole year at one time. I take the pages with the obits to the Waldomore and someone did 2000 so they were good enough to do 2001. Barbara is also doing 1982 and 1983 which were in books but not in any order. We also received the micro films of the 1930 census of the entire state of West Virginia. Darrell Waugh, president, talked about the trip to Richmond. He said that Country Roads prices have gone up so much that he thought that would not be feasible to use them. He has checked into renting two vans which will hold 14 passengers each. He would drive one and has a friend that would drive one. He also said, that if 20 people would go the cost would be around $91.00 each. That would be transportation and motel accommodations. He will try to finalize the details this week. We have subscribed to Golden Seal Magazine and also ordered the back copies. The Micro Film reader was discussed as the crank on the one we have does not work properly. After the building is rewired the library is to buy a reader printer and we voted to buy a new micro film reader. If anyone knows who sells them, please let us know. Jerry Hawkinberry is to check to see if she can get the pavilion for our annual picnic on the 13th of August. Bob and Janice Hardman passed out a leaflet on the German Festival to be held in Sistersville, WV on October 18-19-20, 2002. Looks like it will be lots of fun. They will have a Craft Show, History and Genealogy Fair, Professional and Amateur Entertainment, Puppet Show, Volkswalk, German Games and Contests, Silent Auction, Apple Orchard Tour, German Santa, Dancing, Singing, Food and Drink and Vendors. If you are in the area you might want to attend. Bertha Webb ended the meeting with a poem that her granddaughter had read to her: Here is a copy of it: Susie Lee done fell in love; She planned to marry Joe; She was so happy 'bout it all; She told her pappy so! Pappy told her "Susie gal, You'll have to find another I'd just as soon your Ma don't know But Joe is your half brother. Susie put aside her Joe And planned on marryin Will But after telling Pappy this He said, "There's trouble still" 'You can't marry Will, my gal And please don't tell your Ma But Will and Joe and several mo I know is your half brothers But Mama knew and said "my child Just do what makes you happy Marry Will or marry Joe Cause you ain't no kin to your pappy.
