Sharon, I DIDN'T KNOW THAT! Thanks much for this interesting, informative info! Since we resided there for twenty-five years and that being the homeplace of my husband (Paul "Perk" Hickman), North View will always be special to us. All three kids know that little place as home and visit quite often. See you at the Summit Park Reunion on the 27th!!! Cousin Patti
I am confused about the census books in the libraries. I wasted a lot of time yesterday going through Virginia census before l870 thinking that West Virginia area census was included--they didn't have West Virginia Census for any year. After all, when they took the census in what is now West Virginia, they took the census for Virginia! I couldn't find the family I was looking for. Then I found a CD and found a family I was looking for on the CD--I found it in 1860 census for West Virginia and when I went to get the spool, the guy looked at me strangely and said: that's impossible there is no West Virginia in l860. Well, I knew that--he got the spool and I found the family. The family was not in the Virginia census books I had been looking in so I went back to see what was going on and sure enough, West Virginia census has been excluded from these books. Why would they do that? and what has happened to the West Virginia Census books--they are not in any library I have looked in. Thanks for any enlightenment you can give me, Peggy Rifleman
Here's a quiz for HCGS-ers: What name(s) is associated with North View's orgin? a. Pine Grove b. Cottrill's Roost c. Manayka d. North Knob e. Pinnickinnick Flat f. North Glen g. It had three names h. All of the above i. None of the above - it's always been North View ANSWER: Three names: Pine Grove, North View, and Manayka. It's a tricky answer - and I hope I have this right! According to Davis's History of Harrison County, WV (p. 277), there were only two houses in the North View area during the Civil War era - the Wickes and Sehon homes. Because the approach to the Wickes house was through a row of pines - the area became known as "PINE GROVE". As early as 1871, some lots were laid out in the eastern part by subsequent owners, and in the 1880s & '90s, some of it was used as farm and cattle land. It wasn't until September of 1896, that "NORTH VIEW" came into being, when it was advertised as a new development by the Pine Grove Land and Improvement Company. The company built a windmill in the center of 100 lots to provide water. Back then, most little villages surrounding Clarksburg had their own post offices. North View opened its post office in a store in 1904. (Davis, History of Harrison County, p.277; Clarksburg Telegram May 14, 1904). But apparently, if you bought a lot in the North View area, that didn't necessarily guarantee that North View was your official address - you may have lived in MANAYKA - the name of a post office, according to the WV Archives, which existed between 1918-1935! Even birth certificates listed "Manayka" as the place of birth. Here are a few SOURCES for the placename, "Manayka" (North View): 1. WV Archives and History website lists placename: "MANAYKA, Harrison, 1918-1935" 2. Carnes, John, Pvt, Pride Ave, MANAYKA, WV BATTERY "E" - 314th Field Artillery, WWI Source: http://www.rootsweb.com/~wvmarsha/314/314-rostere.txt 3. REVISED LIST OF DECEASED SOLDIERS OF THE WORLD WAR (I) January 1, 1922 West Virginia The Adjutant General's Office, Charleston: Miller, Icel Pvt Feb 5-18 Broncho pneumonia MANAYKA Btry D 1 Trench Mortar Source: http://ftp.rootsweb.com/pub/usgenweb/wv/military/ww1/domj-r.txt 4. Paul E. Maxwell states in his fact-filled article within "Harrison County Heritage 1784-1995", that North View derived its name from a subdivision "near the turn of the century". He states that the post office was "oddly enough called MANAYKE (sic)." (Also see: http://www.olgaswritings.com/) 5. Clarksburger, Bernice Holbert, said her older sister's birth certificate states her place of birth as MANAYKA. Bernice's family lived on or near 19th Street. (Freddie Layman, Clarksburg,WV) By now, we are all asking the same question (myself included): Whatever could the source be for the name "Manayka"? I believe Manayka is a first name. Could this name have come from one of the original families who first settled there - OR from one of the immigrant families who arrived there in the early 20th century? ...Somebody go and ask Grandpa! - Sharon Sprouse Bramhall (Corrections, comments?)

The Harrison County Genealogical Society held their regular monthly meeting this date at the Waldomore in Clarksburg, WV. Darrell Waugh, president, advised there would be NO trip to Richmond, VA in September as he only had 9 signed up to go. Darrell also told about the problems he had with trying to buy the refurbished microfilm reader. He is to order a new one this afternoon from a firm in Ohio. The society has ordered the 2 volumes of the Duvall book which is being published by Diane Dieterle of Salt Lake City, UT. John Pierce Duvall was a very prominent citizen of Harrison and Lewis Counties. It will not be published until fall. Several of the Duvall family are buried in the old part of the Bridgeport Cemetery, Bridgeport, WV. The annual picnic will be held at Lake Floyd, Rt 50 West of Clarksburg, WV, on the 13th of August. It will be covered dish affair with the society furnishing the hot dogs and hamburgers. We meet around 5:00 P.M. and eat sometime before 6:00. Patricia Dennison gave some reports on the upcoming workshop. We were going to try to have it in October but it was voted on to have it on May 17, 2003 and a place and time will be announced later. That will give us more time to get speakers and others to hold classes. We would like to make this a great workshop. There were 16 in attendance at today's meeting. Diana Johnson will be the volunteer at the Waldomore for the rest of July on Monday's and Thursday morning. David Houchin, librarian, has bought some WV History books from the James & Law Company, and they are still at the main library being cataloged. The next meeting will be held on Friday, August 2nd at the Waldomore in Clarksburg, WV. Ruby Casto Membership Chairman of HCGS

I'm hoping to connect with researchers working on the following families: John G. Carder and Susannah Yerkey who lived in Harrison. John and Susannah were born abt. 1810 John Hudkins m. Rebecca Stout. They were born in 1827. They lived in Union Township. Reuben Allen Kemper and Rosemond E.A. (likely Emily Adeline) Hitt who lived in Lewis County. Reuben died 1902 or 1903 and Rosamond died in 1898. I am happy to share what I have. Thanks! Beverly Railey Walter Oakmont PA

Dear "List" -- I have an unusual posting....About two years ago I made contact with a distant cousin through this list. His name is John Jenkins....he is a retired Army Sergeant Major, and he lives in Kentucky. I have done less than a terrific job of keeping in touch with him lately, and now all of my e-mails to him are returned as "Undeliverable." In truth, I hope he sees this and reconnects with me directly at: LMJenks@aol.com But......if anyone knows what has happened to John, I would be very grateful to learn how to contact him. Does anyone know where to find the Harrison County tax records from 1850-1920? Are they on microfilm somewhere or at the courthouse? Thanks Beverly Railey Walter

What's a Military Family Worth? by Rush Limbaugh, March 11, 2002 I think the vast differences in compensation between the victims of the September 11th casualty, and those who die serving the country in uniform, are profound No one is really talking about it either because you just don't criticize anything having to do with September 11th. Well, I just can't let the numbers pass by because it says something really disturbing about the entitlement mentality of this country. If you lost a family member in the September11th attack, you're going to get an average o $1,185,000. The range is a minimum guarantee of $250,000, all the way up to $4.7 million. If you are a surviving family member of an Americansoldier killed in action, the first check you get is a $6,000 direct death benefit, half of which is taxable Nex you get $1,750 for burial costs.Ifyou are the surviving spouse, you get $833 a month until you remarry. And there's a payment of $211 per month for eachchild under 18. When the child hits 18, those payments come to ascreeching halt. Keep in mind that some of the people that are getting anaverage of $1.185 million up to $4.7 millionare complaining that it'snot enough. We also learned over the weekend that some of thevictims from the Oklahoma City bombing have started an organization askingfor the samedeal that the September 11th families are getting. in addition to that, some of the families of those bombed in theembassies are now asking for compensation as well. You see where this is going, don't you? Folks, this is part and parcel of over fifty years of entitlement politicsin this country. It's just really sad. "Patriotism is not a short and frenzied outburst oemotion but the tranquil and steady dedication of a lifetime."-AdlaiE. Stevenson Jr. Every time when a pay raise comes up for the military they usually receive next to nothing of a raise. Now the greenmachine is in combat in the Middle East while their families haveto survive on food stamps and live in low rent housing. However our own U. S. Congress just voted themselves a raise, and many of you don't know that they only have to be in Congress one-time to receive a pension that is more than $15,000 per month and most are now equal to be millionaires plus. They also do not receive Social Security onretirement because they didn't have to pay into the system. If some of the military people stay in for 20 years and get out as an E-7 you mayreceive a pension of $1,000 per month, and the very people who placed you in harms way receive a pension of $15,000 per month. I would liketo see our elected officials pick up a weapon and join ranksbefore they start cutting out benefits and lowering pay for our sonsand daughters who are now fighting. "When do we finally do something about this ??" If this doesn't seem fair to you, it is time toforward this to as many people as you can.
Dear Friends, The President of the United States is threatening to veto the defense appropriations bill for fiscal year 2003. He intends to do this because the bill ends the concurrent receipt penalty for disabled veterans who are 60 per cent service connected disabled. Right now if a retired service person receives a pension of 2000 a month and for his missing leg he gets 1000 a month from the VA. His income is figured like this, 2000 dollar pension minus the 1000 dollar VA disability pay equals 2000 a month. That's right they retired veteran funds from his earned pension his own disability pay. The only benefit from the disability pay is the veteran does not pay SSI on the 1000 dollars. Please keep in mind how these individuals become 60 percent or greater disabled and ask the president to reconsider his decision to veto. Please click on the link below and contact President Bush now and please let your friends know of this and ask them to contact the president. http://www.fra.org/action/index.html
