If you are talking about VA, the pre-1790 "census" was compiled from tax records and listed tithables (those folks required to pay taxes). These records should be available through LDS Family History Centers on microfilm. I've seen published records for Monongalia and Harrison Counties for the year 1787. Jim
I've seen that Ancestry.com has available a CD of census before the 1790 Federal census. Does anyone know if this information is available non-commercially? All present WV counties. For example, if you're searching for Harrison Co WV in 1860, it would be listed as Harrison Co VA. Patti
Before 1860 what counties of VA would be the current WV? ----- Original Message ----- From: JSample763@aol.com Sent: Friday, July 19, 2002 11:41 AM To: HCGS-L@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [HCGS] Census before West Virginia split from Virginia Census record information for WV and VA can be somewhat confusing. Hi Ruby, Sorry we didn't make the meeting again! Arden is having some health problems and it limits his "goings on". Here is the site for Randolph County, WV Enjoy. http://www.rootsweb.com/~wvrandol/ RECasto wrote: > > Folks, > After going to the Randolph County Genealogical Society's webpage that I > gave you in the meeting news it is for Illinois and not WV. > > Still you might find something on it that you can use. > > Also if you want to read the back e-mails for HCGS you can go to > http://archiver.rootsweb.com and type in hcgs or if you are looking for a > surname list just type in the surname. > > Ruby Casto > > ============================== > To join Ancestry.com and access our 1.2 billion online genealogy records, go to: > http://www.ancestry.com/rd/redir.asp?targetid=571&sourceid=1237

The Harrison County Genealogical Society held their regular monthly meeting this morning at the Waldomore, Clarksburg, WV. There were only 12 in attendance and that was good for as hot as it was. It was good to have our good friend Betty Williams from Lakeland, FL with us today and she will still be here for the September meeting. Darrell gave a report on the new micro film reader which has been ordered and was to have been shipped the 29th of July and we should have it in a week to ten days. Diane Dieterle the lady writing the Duvall book refunded our $90.00 which we had sent her for the two volumes of her new book. She has so much material that it now will have to be in three volumes. We voted to buy all three volumes of the Duvall book. Diana Johnson noted that we are missing on volume of the Braxton County, WV obits and we will be ordering it. It is for the years 1911-1920. Diana also made mention that the Nutter reunion will be held at the City Park (Norwood Park) Nutter Fort on the 17th of August. Tim Eastom has two more volumes of the Nutter book in addition to the one he has already published. Jerry Hawkinberry gave us the webpage for Randolph County, WV which is www.rootsweb.com/~ilrcgs THE ANNUAL PICNIC WILL BE AUGUST 13TH at 5:00 P.M. at Lake Floyd, Rt 50 West of Clarksburg, WV. If you plan to attend please bring a covered dish. Hot dogs and hamburgers will be furnished by the Society. The German Festival at Sistersville in October was discussed and we had thought there would be someone going to set up a table with our publications but no one volunteered. Patricia Dennison wanted us to name a planning committee for the workshop which we are planning in May, 2003. We need a lot of input and if you would be willing to help please be at the Waldomore, Clarksburg, WV on Saturday the 28th of September at 10:00 A.M. for a meeting so a report can be made at the October meeting. Diana Johnson, Elaine Post and Jerry Hawkinberry will be at the meeting. We need more volunteers and ideas so please try to give Patricia your support in making this a great workshop. We also had a discussion on the Annual Christmas Dinner. Several places were named and of course we left it up to Darrell to see what he can do.. It was suggested we rent someplace and have it catered. Any ideas where you would like to go for the Christmas Dinner please let us know. The next meeting will be September 6, 2003. On my way home I have to pass the City Park (Norwood Park) to a lot of the older ones from this area , and it was jumping with activity at 11:30 A.M. August 1, 2 & 3 is the Annual Blackberry Festival and it is becoming quite an event. Jim Reid's always has a booth and do they ever make good blackberry pie and cobbler. That's all folks. Ruby Casto Membership Chairman for HCGS
Reminder: The regular meeting of the Harrison County Genealogical Society will be tomorrow, Friday, August 2nd at the Waldomore, W. Pike St., Clarksburg, WV, at 10:00 A.M. I know it is hot but would like to see another good turnout for the meeting. Ruby Casto Membership Chairman for HCGS

I received this from another list.... Enjoy Ethel Do You Have A.A.A.D.D? They have finally found a diagnosis for my condition. Hooray!! I have recently been diagnosed with A.A.A.D.D. - Age Activated Attention Deficit Disorder...this is how it goes: I decide to wash the car. I start toward the garage and notice the mail on the table. Ok, I'm going to wash the car. But first I'm going to go through the mail. I lay the car keys down on the desk, discard the junk mail and I notice the trash can is full. OK, I'll just put the bills on my desk and take the trashcan out, But since I'm going to be near the mailbox anyway, I'll pay these few bills first. Now, where is my checkbook? Oops, there's only one check left. My extra checks are in my desk. Oh, there's the Coke I was drinking. I'm going to look for those checks. But first I need to put my Coke further away from the computer. Oh, maybe I'll pop it into the fridge to keep it cold for a while. I head towards the kitchen and my flowers catch my eye because they need some water. I set that can of Coke on the counter and...uh oh! There are my glasses. I was looking for them all morning! I'd better put them away first. I fill a container with water and head for the flowerpots * Aaaaaagh! Someone left the TV remote in the kitchen. We'll never think to look in the kitchen tonight when we want to watch television so I'd better put it back in the family room where it belongs. I splash some water into the pots and onto the floor. I throw the remote onto a soft cushion on the sofa and I head back down the hall trying to figure out what it was I was going to do? End of Day: The car isn't washed, the bills are unpaid, the trashcan is overflowing, the Coke is sitting on the kitchen counter, the flowers are half watered, there's a water spot on the floor, the checkbook still only has one check in it, the remote is missing, and I can't seem to find my car keys! When I try to figure out how come nothing got done today, I'm baffled because I KNOW I was busy all day long!!! I realize this is a serious condition and I'll get help, but first -I think I'll check my e-mail... I DON'T REMEMBER WHO I'VE SENT THIS TO!!!
