    1. [HCGS] MEETING
    2. RECasto
    3. Reminder that the regular meeting of the Harrison County Genealogical Society, Clarksburg, WV will be held at the Waldomore this Friday, September 6th at 10:00 A.M. To all of you concerned about the list, I'm sure it will be discussed. As far as I know there have not been any firm rules, other than not to discuss religion, politics or put any pornograhpy on it. If we are afraid to use the list, I see no use having one. I'm sure we all have an elusive family that we need help with and who knows the person to help you may just be on the HCGS list. Don't forget we just don't have members in Harrison County, West Virginia but all of the United States up into Alaska. Do not reply to this message on the list. If you need to say anything please send it to me and I will take it to the meeting with me on Friday. Thanks, Ruby Casto Membership Chairman of HCGS recasto@iolinc.net

    2. To John M. Hines, Sr. and anyone else who interpreted my message the same way Mr. Hines did --- Please go back and read what I wrote! I am saying the same thing you are....just using different words. The Web is filled with crap, porn, junk and....well, you name it whatever you want. This "fight" (I would prefer to call it a viable and lively discussion!) began because a couple of listers complained of the nature of a few messages. Those complaints were their opinions, and of course they were -- and are -- entitled to them. However, having an opinion does NOT MAKE THEM CORRECT! There have been implied statements that there are actual rules that govern this list. To my knowledge, those "rules" would have to begin and end with the First Amendment to our Constitution. If there are by-laws or some other kind of rule, I for one have never seen them, and I doubt that 99% of the rest of the list has seen them either. When and how would we have ever had the chance to see them? Personally, I thoroughly enjoy every one of the "poems" or homilies or whatever....even if they are not specifically aimed at Harrison County Genealogy. So what? Who does it ever hurt? For some of us it helps to create a smile...... or even to MAKE OUR DAY! I enjoy reading submissions that make me feel good about family....or about the art & science of studying family.....or about our GREAT country that allows us to do that -- and to have this list at all! If people have problems with that, I don't agree and I don't understand....but I know some fellows personally who died to defend their right to express those problems -- so I say: Have at it! Complain if you want....but then if you don't get your way -- shut up or get off the list! I guarantee that if the Harrison County Genealogy Society chooses to keep a TOTALLY focused.....nothing but HCGS genealogy messages oriented list, I will shut up myself. I will then pay me dues and download the "list" messages whenever I can. God Bless America and all those who want to keep her FREE! Lee Roland Jenkins Member HCGS in Good Standing

    3. I think this is getting out of hand and if you don't like some of the stuff on this site then maybe you should ask to be removed! I for one do not care what is being put on this site, at least it isn't Pornography or anyother Garbage that you get on the WEB! I think with all the E-mail we get for people to buy or sell is enough for us to worry about! So I think we should just leave things as is! This problem may be discussed on the next meeting if anyone wants to open it in new bussiness! I would hope that it would be discussed with the President and the rest of the officers before hand so we will all be prepared to go forward! We also should remember that we are here to provide a service for the people and not here to complain or fight about what is on the site! Thank You One of the Board of Directors for Harrison County Genealogical Society John M. 2. Dear Bill, Barbara, et al --- I would suggest that the opinions you have expressed about what appears on this list are just that -- OPINIONS! They are not necessarily shared by others....and definitely NOT shared by ALL! If there are actual rules regarding what is and is not appropriate for sharing on the HCGS List, I dare say I have never seen them....perhaps the president or some other officer might comment or supply those rules. I for one prefer a wide open forum -- after all the DELETE key is only 3 inches away....at the most! Respectfully, Lee Roland Jenkins

    3. Our member Sherry Nitschky sent the following article to me and I would like to share it with our many members researching the same families. Holden, Missouri newspaper August 28, 1913 Nay-Fortney Mrs. and Mrs. Jas H. Nay were married in Holden 36 years ago on August 27, 1877. Esquire W. C. Smith performing the ceremony. Wm. Steele and Wm. Bridendolph being the witnesses. Mr. Postmaster Nay knew his wife, Miss Dona Martha M.D.L.V. Fortney, back in West Virginia from childhood. After the ceremony the happy couple left about 9 o'clock at night for Capt. Peaks, in Centerview Township, but owing to the lateness of the hour, stopped at R. B. Graham's. Jim was so flustrated he is not right certain where he stopped. Mr. Steele said it was customary to "stand up" at a wedding, but he remembers that he was sitting down. One thing certain, Jim and his good wife survived and are now grand-parents several times over. This James Henson Nay, Jr. is the son of James Henson Nay, SR and Abigail Ashcraft. Dona Fortney is the daughter of George W. Fortney and Catherine Mathis/Mathews. George W. Fortney and his brother Seth Fortney married Mathis/Mathews sisters Catherine and Mariah Cordelia and lived in Holden, Johnson County, MO. The children of James Henson Nay, Jr. and Dona Fortney Nay were: Hubert D. Nay Hugh P. Nay Earnest L. Nay Ethel A. Nay James G. Nay Willard Sheldon Nay Millard S. Nay Leon D. Nay Francis Bertram Nay Sherry could tell you Nay researchers more about it as she attended the first Nay reunion this year in CO and there will be a new book on the Nay family coming out. A Harry Nay is doing the book. Her e-mail address is yeoldentimes@aol.com Thanks Sherry for sharing this information. Ruby Casto

    3. Ruby, I get all the messages that are sent over the internet and almost all of them don't pertain to me. However, I have gotten to recognize the email names of the senders and have developed an "internet" friendship. Several years ago, I told Bill that his computer had a delete key that removed the message from his hard drive. I believe that his memory is getting short and he has forgotten what he learned. 2. Dear Listers, My number one brick wall for 22 years now is my third great-grandfather Travis WALKER, born about 1786 somewhere in VA, according to most records. (One record listed TN as his birthplace) Travis married a lady named Elizabeth, fathered at least three children: William 1812-1876 Harrison Co WV; Lucinda, who became the first wife of Shadrack COTTRILL and died at St Marys in 1852; and Travis Jr who married Maria/Mariah NORMAN in Lewis Co (W)V in 1843 and disappeared from the face of the earth. Travis spent his life in present-day Lewis Co WV where I've uncovered deeds to prove that he did exist. And, he died in Harrison Co WV in Jul 1870 of kidney disease. Friends, his place of origin and parents' identification are very important to me. Can you help? Thanks much! Patti Ashcraft Hickman

    3. Thank you Ruby and Jim. I did send a couple poems about genealogy but never thought anyone would be offended. The list had been so quiet that I also wondered if it was working..There hasn't been any queries or family information on here for quite a while. Sorry. I'll do better in the future. I have been a member of HCGS maybe 3 or 4 of those years. I save almost every piece of email on HCGS. I had a new operating system put on my computer so lost most of this year.I went back through the month of Aug and see nothing I would complain about, or want the membership to make a resolution about. In fact being fairly new I found some of the genealogy stories quite interesting. Some weeks I wonder if HCGS is working because there are so few EMAILS. Just maybe you meant this email for another board or have been at this far to long. Remember some of us are novices. This Email and the last two I read MAYBE do not belong on here!!!! 3. I just looked to see the number of messages sent to the list during the month of August and there has been 41 which would add up to a little of over one message per day. July there were only 20 messages June there were 27 & May 26 which does not average out to 1 a day. Lot of these messages are from me as our members are interested in our meetings and what is going on in the society. If you do not wish to be on the list you can go to www.archiver.rootsweb.com and read all of the messages that are posted. I really don't think the list is being over abused but I have printed off your messages and will take them with me to the next meeting, and see what the majority thinks about it. Thanks for your interest in our list. Ruby Casto Membership Chairman of HCGS

    3. Bill, I hope you get further than I did when I made the same suggestion awhile back. I was sent some pretty nasty comments as well as reminders that our ancestors were friends, why couldn't we be. I believe in being friendly and helping each other, but I see no need for all the irrelevant things. Hope you are successful. Barbara

    3. Sir, Could you please bring up at the next meeting a discussion of some kind of resolution to remind folks to stick to genealogy topics using the HCGS list? There are enuf jokes and stories all over the internet. This list is supposed to be used for one purpose. Maybe a resolution from the members present at a meeting with a reminder to those on the list would help keep some of the time & space consuming "other stuff" off. Thank you in advance for your consideration. Sincerely, Bill Mc Afee
