3. Ethel and Charlotte Could this be the Jacob that is buried in the Ash Cemetery on Gregory Run? His stone is hard to read but the death is Sept. 10, 1856. There is a stone next to his but it is too difficult to read; could this be his wife? 3. Danny, Thanks. Sometimes we do need to share things besides genealogy. We are in this together like it or not. I feel like I should share this also. This could have been one of our ancestors! Ethel The Rusty Gun A protest raged on a courthouse lawn, Round a makeshift stage they charged on, Fifteen hundred or more they say, Had come to burn a Flag that day. A boy held up the folded Flag, Cursed it, and called it a dirty rag. An OLD MAN pushed through the angry crowd, With a rusty shotgun shouldered proud. His uniform jacket was old and tight, He had polished each button, shiny and bright. He crossed that stage with a soldier's grace, Until he and the boy stood face to face. FREEDOM OF SPEECH; the OLD MAN said, Is worth dying for, good men are dead, So you can stand on this courthouse lawn, And talk us down from dusk to dawn, But before any Flag gets burned today, This OLD MAN IS GOING TO HAVE HIS SAY!! My father died on a foreign shore, In a war they said would end all war. But Tommy and I wasn't even full grown, Before we fought in a war of our own. And Tommy died on Iwo Jima's beach, In the shadow of a hill he couldn't quite reach Where five good men raised this Flag so high, That the WHOLE DAMN WORLD COULD SEE IT FLY. I got this bum leg that I still drag, Fighting for this same old Flag. Now there's but one shot in this old gun, So now it's time to decide which one, Which one of you will follow our lead, To stand and die for what you believe? For as sure as there is a rising sun, You'll burn in Hell 'fore this Flag burns, son. Now this riot never came to pass. The crowd got quiet and that can of gas, Got set aside as they walked away To talk about what they had heard this day. And the boy who had called it a dirty rag, Handed the OLD SOLDIER the folded Flag. So the battle of the Flag this day was won By a tired OLD SOLDIER with a rusty gun, Who for one last time, had to show to some, THIS FLAG MAY FADE, BUT THESE COLORS DON'T RUN. Author Unknown

    2. I realize that all of us are having a rough time with what is going on right now in Iraq, but my heart is with the troops that are over there doing a job. Please read this and share with other people. Danny A California mother whose son is right now in Kuwait poised to knock Saddam's block off, wrote her son asking how he would feel if she joined other relatives of service members in an anti-war demonstration in Hollywood last month. After reading her son's response, she elected notto participate. Dear Mom: It's really your decision to march if you want to or not. You are the one who has to decide if what we are doing out here is right or not. My opinion is not yours. I do, however, have things I would like for you and Grandma and everyone else at home to know. I am a United States soldier. I was sworn to defend my country against all enemies, foreign and domestic. People may not agree with the things we are ordered to do. I would like to address those people by telling them that terrorism is not only a threat to us as Americans, but to many other innocent people in the world. What type of country would we be if we didn't defend the rights and freedoms of others, not because they're Americans, but how about just because they're human? We live in a country where people feel secure with their daily lives. They do business like usual and don't worry about the thought of terrorism actually happening to them. The people of 9-11 thought the same thing. We now know that it can happen to anyone at any time. Yet as Americans we're afraid of losing our soldiers to defend our security. I can only speak for myself when I say that my life is an easy expense to ensure that my family and friends can live in peace. I strongly believe in what we are doing and wish you were here to see for yourselves the honor and privilege that American soldiers aboard this ship are feeling, knowing that we are going to be a part of something so strong and so meaningful to the safety of our loved ones. Then you would know what this potential war is about. We will stand tall in front of terrorism and defeat it. We as soldiers are not afraid of what may happen. We are only afraid of Americans not being able to understand why we are here. I ask for your courage as Americans to be strong for us; I ask for your understanding in what we believe is right. I ask for your support in what we are sworn to do: defend our country and the life of all. We will succeed in our task and will end the threat of terrorism in our back yard. We will also end the threat of terrorism in our neighbors'. We have to remind ourselves of what this country stands for: life, liberty and justice for all. In order to maintain those rights we have to stop the threat of terrorism. I am proud to be here. I will be coming home, but not until I know that it's going to be safe for all Americans and for everyone I love. My family is first. My country is where they live. I will defend it. Lonnie J. Lewis Navy corpsman C Co. 1/4 WPN PLT UIC 39726 FPO AP 966139726 P.S. Mom, please send this to everyone who has a hard time understanding why we are here. Ask the paper to put what I've said in a column so that others will know why we are here and what we are here for. I love you all and will be home soon. I left my address so that if anyone feels like writing to let me know how they feel, they can. ======================================================= Clarksburg WV dmjenkins110@wmconnect.com ---------------------- God Bless America - Bless God America http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~jenkinsconnections/

    3. Hi Jean, Thanks for writing. First let me get this out of the way, our mailing address is Davis but we live in Old Timberline in Canaan Valley, so maybe you have been close to us at some time, we will have to see and get together someway because if we can't connect with Mary Ann, we can in the generation before that I bet. Anyhow, on to Mary Ann, I don't have her married to James Radabaugh, but to William David White. I don't know if she remarried after his death in 1890 or not, but I don't have any record of it. They had several children: Daniel Newton-my grandfather married Nancy Baker; Melvin Lee-died in Midland, Texas, Bertha Sofrona or Sophronia; Laura Alice (died when 8); Ida who married a LeMasters; Homer; Savilla Catherine (died at 8 months of age); Eliza Jane married E. B.Bond; and an unnamed child that lived one day. I have a photo of Mary Ann with Homer; Lee; Bertha and Daniel Newton and Mary Ann was probably about age 50. Don't remember any mention of a Radabaugh, so I'm thinking that maybe one of John (lst) sons or grandsons had a son they named John and he had a daughter named Mary Ann. Do you have any info on the John-where he lived, birth or death dates, etc? John Elder, Jr. was born 31 Jul 1796; married 9 Dec 1819 both in Harrison County and died 3 Oct 1877 in Alvy, Tyler, (W)V. He is buried on Big Run in Tyler County. John Sr. had the following sons (and this may be where another John came in that had the Mary Ann??) William Kedrick b 1 Mar 1806 in Harrison and died 11 Mar 1891 at age 85 but I don't have where. His wife was Ruanna Willis. Samuel Elder b 1818 (no other info). But there were lots of other Elders also. I just found a big error in my work as I have two different father's for my John, Jr. so I'd better do some more research. Oh well, there is so much to keep up with and it gets soooo confusing doesn't it. Will let you know which I find is right, but the dates indicate that John Jrs. parents must have been Joseph and Elizabeth (Betsy) Shields. Just looked up where Bellefonte, Pa. is located and found that you are very close to State College, Pa. A friend that has a house here lives in State College somewhere so maybe you know them: Bill and Honey Jaffee?? Another that I have met that is a relative of Bill's is Jim Hoover and he lives with wife, Michelle, somewhere around State College. If you would like more Riley info or something I have on the Elders, let me know and I'll be happy to send it to you. Just give me a little time to get it together as my husband is waiting for a call regarding surgery and that will put a stopper on things for a time. Also don't forget, let me know when you come to Canaan. Where do you all stay and do you come summer or winter? Betty From: "Jean Binns Smith" <shejean@pennswoods.net> To: <HCGS-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Tuesday, March 18, 2003 10:24 AM Subject: Re: [HCGS] Happy St. Patrick's Day > Dear Betty, > Delighted to get your St. Patrick's day wishes. Will get back to you when I have more time to check dates, but Mary Ann Elder (1847-1938) was my great grandmother . Did your Mary Ann( Molly) marry James Radabaugh? I knew her father was John Elder. Her mother was a Sharp, according to her death certificate. Some where I found something to make me thing she was Charlotte, maybe a census record.. Do you remember Your " Grandma Radabaugh?" I do mine. I have her bible with Mary Ann Elder written in it. This is exciting, because every two-three years my husband and I go to Cannan Valley for a couple of days, and I know where Davis is. 3. Dear Betty, Delighted to get your St. I also have found a Riley, but not as much info as you. I'll have to look at it the next time I volunteer up there. My difficulty is finding the original immigrant as most of my ancestors have been in the US for such a long time. I was saying earlier that when I was younger I thought that I was around 3/8 Irish. Now, I'd be surprised if I was more than 3/32 Irish. My corned beef and cabbage dinner tasted pretty good although my 1/4 plus Irish daughter didn't care for it. She did like the soda bread though. Patricia

    3. After getting Barbara's message, thought St. Patrick's Day may be a good time to mention the Harrison County folks I'm researching. Riley: Jesse arrived in Harrison County about 1809 and settled in Valley Springs, (W)V. He had several children--including another Jesse that married Nancy Golden. Our line follows his son, Elijah that married Sarah Carter. Any info on Jesse or Elijah's wife, Sarah, would be greatly appreciated. According to a man that wrote The Colonial Riley's the first to come over from County Cavan was Miles Riley (Ryley) in 1635. Elder: My Elder's begin with John that lived in Harrison County bef 1810. He was born in Ireland to William Elder, wife unknown. Thanks to other researchers who have shared info. I have found my line of Elders (also they make my husband and me cousins as Agnes Riley married John Elder; and Fielding Riley, son of Jesse, married Margaret Elder, daughter of John and my ggrandmother was Mary Ann Elder, daughter of John R. Elder, Jr. who was the grandson of John R. Elder, Sr. and wife, Margaret McHenry. The Elders came to America prior to 1795. I don't know where in Ireland they were from, but from the fact that it was reported that they were Scotch Irish, I would guess Northern Ireland somewhere. I'm sure there are others of Irish descent in both of our families, but these are two of the main ones. I'll be happy to share info with anyone on any of the names above or the ones listed below and Happy St. Patrick's Day to everyone.
