    3. Hi Folks, The March newsletter was mailed yesterday the 24th and you should be receiving it in a few days. A lot of us local people received ours today. Please look for the information and application for the workshop which is going to be held on the 17th of May and if you plan on attending try to get your pre-registration mailed in early. It looks like Patricia Dennison has a good one day workshop well taken care of. She will probably have further information for you. Diana Johnson, the newsletter editor, is still in need of articles for the newsletter so you can send them to her at 26 Chieftan Hill, Clarksburg, WV, 26301 or to Harrison County Genealogical Society, P. O. Box 387, Clarksburg, WV 26301 and to her attention. Thanks and hope to see a lot of you at the workshop. Ruby Casto Membership Chairman of HCGS [This E-mail scanned for viruses by Declude Virus]

    2. In April of 1998, I put out a 700+ book on the Swiger's Connection. I am working on an update on CD only of this, hopefully to be finished by mid summer. It will be a lot cheaper and a lot less work than the book. I am asking people with connection to the family, Swiger, Bates, Allen, etc., to please send me pictures to put on this CD. I have a lot of additions and connections on this family. So please, email me at dmjenkins110@wmconnect.com. 1. [HCGS] Officials urge against unsolicited troop mail
    2. Officials urge against unsolicited troop mail 03/23/03 - WASHINGTON (AFPN) -- To bolster force protection, the general public is urged not to send unsolicited mail, care packages or donations to forward-deployed servicemembers unless they are a family member, loved one or personal friend, said Department of Defense officials. On Oct. 30, DOD suspended the "Operation Dear Abby" and "Any Servicemember" mail programs because of force protection concerns. Although these programs provide support to friends and loved ones stationed overseas, they also provide an avenue to introduce hazardous substances or materials into the mail system from unknown sources. Unsolicited mail, packages and donations from organizations and individuals also compete for limited airlift space used to transport supplies, warfighting materiel and mail from family and loved ones. Recently, DOD officials became aware of organizations and individuals who continue to support some form of the "Any Servicemember" program by using the names and addresses of individual servicemembers and unit addresses. These programs are usually supported by well-intentioned, thoughtful and patriotic groups who are simply unaware of the new risks facing deployed military forces, said officials. Some individuals and groups publicize the names and addresses of servicemembers, ships or units on Web sites. The result is a potential danger to the troops they wish to support. DOD officials cannot support creative and well-intentioned efforts that defeat force protection measures, but can instead recommend alternatives to mail and donation programs. To show support to troops overseas, the following are recommended: -- Log on to the following Web sites to show support, to include greeting cards, virtual "thank you" cards and calling card donations to help troops stay in contact with loved ones: http://www.defendamerica.mil/support_troops.html http://www.usocares.org/home.htm http://www.army.mil/operations/iraq/faq.html -- Visit Department of Veterans Affairs hospitals and nursing homes. Volunteer services to honor veterans who served in past conflicts. Mail from family members and loved ones has always been encouraged and the military mail system will continue to work hard to get that mail to servicemembers overseas, said officials. 3. Hi This cemetery is located on Gregory Run. I have never been there. A cousin of mine read the stones about 10 years ago and here is what she wrote: The cemetery is located just below the old Flowers store. The first road on the right, cemetery is on the hill to your left. This is beyond the turnoff that goes over the hill to Lamberts Run and the Hammond property. Also, there was a reading of the same cemetery by Guy Tetrick listing the same people. All of this property was once owned by Adam Ash, 1792 settler, and his descendants. The Marsh book on Pioneers of Ten Mile also lists this cemetery. Let me know if this is the same Jacob. Ethel Hammond Nielsen
