The Harrison County Genealogical Society held their regular monthly meeting this morning on the second floor of the Waldomore, Clarksburg, WV. There were 15 of us in attendance and it was good to have Jim Cottrill of Pittsburgh, Pa and Ethel & Arden Swiger of Elkins, WV with us today. Jim Cottrill brought 8 x 10 pictures in protective sleeves and gave them to each one that was there that had attended the Christmas Dinner. He did a fine job and we want to thank Jim for them. Darrell opened the meeting by reading a poem "Research & Rhyme" that John Nuzum had brought for him to read. The Braxton County births book is in and also a Westfall genealogy was given to the Society. There was a lot of discussion on the workshop which is to be held on the 17th of May and if you have not registered yet, please do so asap because time is running out. If you get it in by the 7th of May it will still be $12.50 but walk-ins at the door will be $15.00. The two LDS members teaching the class will be Jane Malone of Fairmont and Charles Preston of Clarksburg. Registration will begin at 8:30 with donuts and coffee. John Nuzum will be at the Waldomore from 9:00A.M. to noon on the 17th of May as David Houchin, the librarian, will be at the Courthouse teaching a class. To all the local people Darrell Waugh, our president of the HCGS, will be on the noon news May 5th of WDTV Channel 5 and on May 12th on the noon news on WBOY Channel 10. He will be speaking on the workshop. The Waldomore has been painted on the outside and it really looks good. Now would be a good time to take some pictures of the Waldomore. Blanche Day had brought a copy of the 1930 census of Tenmile District of Harrison County which her daughter Martha Dennison donated to the Society and we can make copies of it to sell. We want to say thanks to Martha for this district of the 1930 census. John Nuzum says he has all of the Elk District Census of Harrison County from 1850 to 1930 in one book. We will probably be making copies of this also. The trip to Washington, DC which is in the planning stages has been set for October 7, 2003 and the cost will be $25.00 for members and $30.00 for non members. If you think you would be interested in going please let Darrell know. dew38@msn.com It is a fun trip even if you don't find out anything. The date of our annual picnic has been set for August 12th at Lake Floyd. More details will be forthcoming later. What a surprise I recieved at the meeting of the Harrison County Genealogical Society this morning. It is also unbelieveable the way that it happened. Our member Sherry Nitschky from Colorado Springs, CO, heard that Bob & I are going to have our 50th anniversary on the 8th of May. She got in touch with Jim Cottrill in Pittsburgh, PA and he got in touch with Ethel Swiger in Elkins, WV. After the meeting was over Darrell said, Jim and Ethel, had something they wanted to do. I'm sorry that Bob couldn't be there as he just never has a good day anymore but everyone I think at the meeting was in on this except me and after the meeting we all went downstairs and had a piece of the anniversary cake that they had bought and a cup of coffee. They even had 50th anniversary plates, napkins and cups. What a surprise this was to me. Would you believe it someone even told Jim Cottrill that I didn't drink coffee so he brought tea bags with him. Oh yes, they even had gold lace placemats. I want to say a great big thanks to each of you that was in attendance today and it certainly was a surprise. What a great group to be associated with. Sorry I'm late getting the information on about the meeting tomorrow but this is the first time I have been to the computer today. Meeting time is 10:00 A.M. on the second floor of the Waldomore, Clarksburg, WV. May 2, 2003. I'm sure we will have to finalize the plans for the workshop. We need as many members as possible to attend. Thanks, Ruby Casto [This E-mail scanned for viruses by Declude Virus]

In a message dated 4/27/03 8:53:34 PM Eastern Daylight Time, jhines@ma.rr.com writes: > Has anyone got a count on how many we have so far? > Right now we don't have a lot so we still need to "sell" the workshop. There will probably be quite a few more registrations come in this week as May 1 was the deadline that was written on the form. We can accept late registrations but the charge will go up to $15.00. I had a question about the cost. Just to clear up any possible misunderstandings: the cost of the entire workshop is $12.50, late registrations - $15.00, lunch is $5.00 but you need to get your registration in early if you want to order lunch. Because these agencies are well aware of the great interest in family history, many are working to make their sites friendly to genealogists. Below is a handy list of some U.S. government sites and some tips for locating others. Hi Linda, Just wanted you to know I had no problem reading your book online - and what an interesting read! You have turned a sad tale into a tribute! At long last, the doomed soldiers aboard the Sultana are acknowledged and remembered in greater detail for those descendants seeking to find them. I salute you! The work you continue to do to honor Civil War soldiers is very much appreciated. Congratulations on a fine job! Sharon Sprouse Bramhall
This is a reminder that workshop registration forms need to be sent in around the first of May. I'm sure that there won't be a problem if a form is sent in a couple days late but there is a cut-off date concerning the lunch. If you later decide that you want to attend, please let us know. Thank you, Patricia Dennison
Would anyone have the directions to or know where we could find them to the NAY Cemetery at Worthington, Marion County? Thanks Ethel

Just received this from the DAR list. Sounds good! HOUSE PASSES RESOLUTION AFFIRMING PLEDGE Good News! The U.S. House of Representatives overwhelmingly approved a resolution affirming the Pledge of Allegiance with the phrase "under God." The vote was 400-7 in favor of the nonbinding resolution. The resolution says that reciting the phrase "one nation under God" is a patriotic act, not a statement of religious faith. Consider each day a gift.
