Or maybe it just turns into another number when you cross the state line. Then you turn right to get to Core. I like traveling the back roads but I bet the majority of people that go there would want to travel I-79 and get off around Morgantown or Mt. Morris. There is a big coal mine at Blacksville. Patricia
Sarah Lantz Benedum, wife of Michael Late Benedum, lived in Blacksville. Her family farm was located in both WV and PA, as is the Lantz family cemetery I think. So the research is in both Monongalia Co, WV and Greene Co, PA. Learning about her maternal lines is much easier--- just head to Ritchie Co and look into Marsh and Collins. Beverly Railey Walter

I was looking at Davissons in the Tetrick files recently and saw where someone (I think it was his grandson, Issac) said that John B. Davisson married Rachel Gaines in Blacksville. This would also have been in the mid 1800's, probably around 1840. Thanks, Patricia
Patricia, It was my great grandparents that were married and in his Civil War papers it says 1852, Blacksville, Pa., but I've been told it is WV. I can't find a record of their marriage and have been told they were married in Harrison County, but surely he should know where he went to get married, unless he was awfully forgetful. Rick Toothman gave a talk at one of the workshops and he is the one that told about people going to Blacksville and getting married at a big tree. Is there anyone on the list doing research on the Flanagan family from Harrison/Doddridge Counties? I am looking for information on my gggrandmother, Mary Ann Flanagan Williams. She was born about 1826 and married Thomas Williams, son of William and Sophia Freshour Williams on 2 Oct 1845. I believe her parents were William and Elizabeth Sheets Flanagan. Thomas Williams died 14 Feb 1898 but I have been unable to find the death date for Mary Ann. Thanks for any help Charlotte
Was it somebody from this group that talked about people going to Blacksville to get married? If so, was it Blacksville, Pennsylvania or West Virginia? Also, at what time period would this have been common? Patricia
I am forwarding this from the Mineral Co. list. I think it is a wonderful idea to do no matter where you are visiting graves. There are soooooo many of us still looking for the final resting place of our ancestors. It doesn't take a whole lot of time and the results mean so much. All it takes is to take along your video camera, tape recorder or pen & paper and collect the information from the memorial stones. You could donate this to the Mineral County USGenWeb in memory of those you were visiting. I got this from another list, and am going to participate with this idea. When you shop for those memorial flowers and wreaths for your own loved ones, won't you join me in picking up a couple of $1 bunches of flowers to place on those lonely graves where no flowers are placed? Do it for our fellow researchers who haven't found those graves yet. Do it for the family members who may not be close enough or healthy enough to do it.. do it for those who have long since gone but used to care for the graves. Do it, just because you're a family historian, and care about these who have passed before us. Do it, because it just feels good! It is a special feeling know that these who would have been without, can now show that someone cared!" Have a safe Memorial Day weekend. Patti and All; As soon as me and Dave can get together we will send you all a format to work what you want on getting your families separated! It is a long process so bear with us a little! We work different tours and it is hard to get together except on Saturday's and sometimes on Sunday! But we will get back to you all! We are thinking about trying to get another class sometime in the near future! We will have to talk about it at the next couple of meetings and see what comes out of it! Till then I hope that we answered most of your questions as good as we could with what time we had and if not you know where we are! At least me that is! Anna, I didn't mean to send that message to the group, glad to know I am not the only one wanting to know. John said it probably would be later this summer as he had several projects right now. A very hearty thanks to all that worked on the workshop this past weekend. It was my first HCGS workshop. It definitly won't be my last. I was very impressed with the presentors and the range of subjects that we could pick from for our "classes." Wonderful Job Guys!!!! Thanks again, Anna Chandler Morgantown WV

Thank you for your input. I was just thinking awhile ago that I should send out some sort of a survey to those who attended the workshop. I had never been involved in planning an event like this before. I certainly learned a great deal. Patricia
