Hi Folks, We had 24 in attendance at the HCGS picnic plus three football players from Liberty High School. As usual there was plenty of good food and if you were in the area and did not come you missed a good time. Rain was threatening in the Clarksburg area but when we reached Maple Lake the sun was shining but about 7:00 P.M. we did get a little rain. We have had some rain for the past 13 days. Clarence and Lois Price were in from California, Betty Williams from Florida and Jim & JoAnn Cottrill from Pittsburgh, Pa. It's always good to have Jim attend our functions because he is the shutter bug. I have already had a preview of the 34 pictures he took at the picnic yesterday evening. We also want to thank Jerry Hawkinberry for all of the work she does in making this picnic a success. When she comes, she has the hamburgers patted out and brings all of the necessary utensils, plates, etc besides getting the pavilion for us. What I like about the location you don't have to carry things but just a short distance. Diana Johnson & I did a little skit about HU being the leader of China, similar to Who is on First Base. Thanks Lee Jenkins. Diana also had a couple of mind puzzles for us to do. Don't forget the FTM workshop this Saturday, then the bus trip to DC on the 7th of October and lastly will be the Christmas Dinner. Ruby Casto

James Lowell McPherson, appointed in 1943 at the age of 22 by Governor Matthew M. Neely, holds the record as the youngest poet laureate. According to Jim Comstock, McPherson's parents, unbeknownst to him, submitted a poem entitled "West Virginia" (written while an undergraduate at West Virginia University) to a contest conducted to select the state's laureate. (note 5) He received the letter notifying him of his laureateship while serving as a Pfc in "the 95th Infantry Division in the California Desert" (Comstock 3055). McPherson had attended Marshall, but received his B.A. degree from West Virginia University in 1942. He later did graduate work at Columbia University. Knopf published his novel, Goodbye Rosie, in 1965. Consider each day a gift. Use each for who knows when we shall no longer be able to do so. James R COTTRILL. Laura; I hope this is Laura! Are you familiar with where the Library is? If so then go past the Library to the stop light and get in the Left lane and turn left towards the Fire Dept. and go straight between the Fire Dept. and the Caperton Center. THE CAPERTON CENTER Parking lot is behind on the right! If you aren't familiar then from 79 get off at the Bridgeport exit (I think it is 119 exit) turn left and go toward Clarksburg and it will be the 4th turnoff (I think it is Chestnut exit) and go straight to the 2nd street and turn left and one block turn right and that is the Fire Dept. and Caperton Center on right. Turn between the Fire Dept. and the Caperton Center and parking is behind the Caperton Center! I hope that is good enough directions! Lee, Just saw your Robinson Search message - I thought I would throw this in: In doing research for our Summit Park community history book, I found an early settler named BENJAMIN ROBINSON, who had purchased 99 1/2 acres in 1795, from William and Joyce Murphy on Murphy's Run. This was one of the first settlements in our community. ("Summit Park - It All Began On Murphy's Run", p. 193-194 - Mary Virginia Sprouse & S. Bramhall). "Murphy's Run, branch of Elk Creek, beginning at the corner of Black's line running south to a red oak...to a black gum..red oak bush on John Black's line. Thence, with the meanders of the same to the beginning - the whole of the land is on the south of the said Black's land and adjoining lands of Benjamin Coplin, which the said Murphy now lives on, containing 99 1/2 acres, more or less, with all profits and commodies." (Harrison County WV Deeds 2:141) Note for out of towners: Summit Park is just east of Clarksburg, off old Rt. 50, and John Black's land was called "Black's Hollow" - also known as "Columbia Hollow" where Columbia Mines operated. (Two sets of my great-grandparents lived there.) The rows of coal company houses are now gone and a medical disposal facility occupies this land. Hope this helps put another piece in the puzzle!
