We want to welcome another member to our HCGS members only list. Virginia Berdish [email protected] Virginia has been a member for sometime. Her surnames should be in the December, 2009 newsletter. Ruby Casto Membership Chairman of HCGS
The Harrison County Genealogical Society held their regular monthly meeting this date with the new president, Ted Wolfe, presiding. There were 12 persons in attendance and one of them became a new member. It was also good to see John Nuzum, vice president. Betty Waugh did take the scholarship applications to each of the high schools and Dick Wilt wrote up the article for the newspaper and it has already been in the paper. Diana Johnson has been checking with some of the festivals which are held in the area and we voted to see about attending three of them. The Scottish Heritage Festival is held in Bridgeport, WV on April 30-May 2nd, the Black Heritage Festival is held in September and the Apple Butter Festival is held in Salem, WV sometime in October. We would like to participate in all three of them and we do have volunteers to work them. Diana Johnson, Betty Waugh, Dick Wilt, Darla Everly and Bertha Webb. If anyone else would like to help, please contact Diana Johnson. David Houchin, librarian, has been getting some of our publications reprinted and in the Simpson District Cemetery book pages 312-315 are missing and he will make copies of them for the books as they are being sold. He is also going over the list of material that Hacker's Creek Pioneer Descendants have for sale to see if we need any of their publications. We also received the book from Ethel Nielsen, on the Ash-Davis-and Hammond lines. June Conrad said she will need volunteers to help read the scholarship genealogies and the following committee was set up: Betty Waugh, June Conrad, David Houchin and Ted Wolfe. They will meet in early May. There was a discussion about giving out more scholarships, which we can't do this year and one thing that was mentioned, might be to take the profits from one of our publications and set it aside for scholarships. The applications for the scholarships needs to be postmarked by the 15th of April. A person is wanting to donate an old family Bible to the society which belonged to the West family. David said he could copy the births, marriages and death records for the files and then store the Bible. Betty Waugh said there will be a memorial service for Darrell on the 23rd of May at 2:00 p.m. at the Heavener Cemetery in Buckhannon to inter his ashes. Bertha Webb was wondering how people could remove persons buried in the Point Pleasant Cemetery from a list when they are buried in the cemetery and have a stone. They aren't planning on removing the bodies from the cemetery, just removing them from a list. Diana Johnson said that the March newsletter is almost assembled but she is going to hold off sending it out until the end of the month, that way more people will have an opportunity to renew their memberships, if they wish to do so. Dick Wilt took a group picture today and it should be on the webpage. I hope I haven't missed anything as we had a very productive meeting today. Ruby Casto Membership Chairman of HCGS

Ruby: Please welcome Mr. Wolfe on behalf of the Lynch family of Ashtabula, Ohio. Hope to meet him when we get back to Ohio from Florida, & make a trip to Clarksburg sometime soon after the 15th of April. FYI, we are doing a family history tour (in early August) to introduce our grandchildren to their WV ancestors. First day will be a "Smith/Hacker/Swisher Day" in Upshur and Webster Counties. Second day will be a "Ritter, Lynch, Morris, Sommerville and Smith Day" in Harrison County. The third day will be a "Kelley/Bee/Lambert" day in Doddridge & Ritchie Counties. The script is about complete. The script will introduce the grandchildren to the likes of George Morris, Nancy Sommerville, Hiram Lynch Jr.or Elmer Smith For instance, the children should meet Nancy Sommerville in Good Hope; Elmer Smith in front of his wholesale on N. 4th St. (Glen Elk); Hiram Lynch at the Twin Houses, Capt. John Michael Ritter on Grass Run at Ritter Hill, and George Morris either at Katy Lick or "Turkeyfoot" (Wolf Summit). This tour is still a bit tentative but looks like Harrison County Day will be August 13th. Again, the tour is for the benefit of children ranging in age from about 7 to 14. Hiram W. Thanks for taking over this site. I am looking forward to going to it. You and I met many years ago and I know you are thorugh and will do a good job. Sorry I am unable to help you. My health has been a big problem for me in recent years - I'm 70 now with limited mobility. If I ever see a question that I think I can help with, I will let you know. Barbara, Thank you for your support and encouragement I appreciate your watching over things as well that is comforting to know someone cares like that Anything that you can provide, small snippets, thumbnail sketches of your families - one liners, one paragraphs once a week , once a month once a year are always welcome... I already have people emailign me with thumbnail sketches of their family lines, There is small irntry ont eh Home page aboutr a future goal of wrokign towards a Genalogial index. There are soem technical things I need to learn to do what I want. I have heard of spammer problems in the past for things like this but so far none. I ahope to make a page that people can do this. I am humbled by your remembrance, and wish you the favor of the Lord, My warmest regards Paul ----- Original Message ----- From: Barbara Wolfe To: Paul Pettit ; [email protected] Sent: Sunday, February 21, 2010 10:04 AM Subject: Re: [HCGS] Monongalia Co WVGenWeb Site Update Thanks for taking over this site. Hello to the list I have taken over the volunteer responsibilty to coordinate the Monongalia County WVGenWeb site. 1. The pages have been updated and format changed after a dormant period. 2. Some of the Look Up Volunteer email addresses are not active ( http://www.wvgenweb.org/monongalia/lookups.htm ). Replacements are needed unless these folks are monitoring this list and can get back to me. If you know them or are able to do lookups yourself, please let me know. Nonactive emails include those for: Jonni Longstaffe Betty B. Card Cindy Crawford Billie Lovett, Kathleen Rogers Lovett Norris Taylor Anyone with addtional resources who can volunteer to help others out are invited to let me know. 3. There is an interactive calendar on the website on which you can post reunions workshops and other such events for anyting having to do with WV Family History. 4. I would like to work towards having a team approach to Monongalia Website which is one of the most important and also one of the hardest hit by the loss of early records. If you have any skills or knowledge relevant to Monongalia County people and history such as one particular district or township or historical era and can volunteer some time to compile information about that area, please let me know as well. I must admit as well that I have collateral and distant lines from Monongalia County; but my direct liens were mostly from other counties to the south. All of our successes will be greater if we share inforamtion about connections and when we research a source of information and can provide information found there of other families, then we can all easliy add free information online to help each other out, a little at time or more. Remember Monongalia County does not have a genealogial Society, we are it. Best regards Paul Pettit Monongalia Co WVGenWeb Coordinator
