    3. Linda, John, listers all...   We can't do a two-day trip without quite a bit of planning, and for this year's trip it's too late to change the design.  As for the cost, I'd like to keep it low, but without making the society take too bit a hit.  And frankly, it would be nice to break even.   If we had 40 riders at $40 dollars each we would pay for the bus and have a little left over for parking fees.  At the other end of the the scale, if we had 30 riders at $30 each the society would be subsidizing the trip to the tune of more than $600--and at that point someone would surely object.   But the best way to have a low price is to fill up the bus.  It seats 47.  If we can get that many commitments (or nearly) we can lower the price to $35 and the trip will still pay for itself.  If we fall a little short, the subsidy will still be small and no one would object.  So let's put some names on a list.   David H.   --- On Sat, 7/31/10, [email protected] <[email protected]> wrote: From: [email protected] <[email protected]> Subject: Re: [HCGS] DC Trip To: [email protected] Date: Saturday, July 31, 2010, 2:37 PM Just thinking: A tour of D. 1. Re: [HCGS] [HCPD] Revolutionary War--questions, need help
    2. How do you find some one who was said to have fought in the Revolutionary War who may have died in the war? Especially when you have no information such as correct spelling of the name or exact location? This is lengthy so please bear with me. According to family notes my 3rd great grandfather came from Germany and was in America in time to have fathered a son, born according to 1850 census records, in 1769 near Hagerstown, MD. and to have fought "under Washington." The family "after Penn made a treaty with the Indians, located near Gettysburg. Later came across Braddock's old road to around Morgantown." Not sure of the sequence of the events. Brothers George (my ggg grandfather) and Frederick STEORTS / STORTS / STEORTZ / STOTZ / STOTS / STURTZ, etc came from Germany together. I always thought they arrived in Philadelphia but lately found a note that said they came into New York. George was a carpenter and Frederick was a machinist. This seems to be one of the more difficult German names. But there was enough specific information in the partial notes I have that I feel they are true. His son George STEORTS / STORTS / STOTS shows up on land purchases in 1816 at the Lewis / Harrison County border along what is now Rt. 19 just north of Jane Lew, WV. In 1827 he married Eunice Bailey Stalnaker, widow of John Whitman Stalnaker by whom she had five children. She was the daughter of Minter Bailey, Sr. who bought land next door in about 1807, the same land where Indians earlier killed Thomas Hughes and a Lowther. George and Eunice had six children, three girls and three sons, one died in the Civil War. George was 58 and Eunice (poor woman!) was 36 when they married. So George may have had another family earlier that I have not found either. In Mary Jackson's mother's journal (she was a connection through the Cookman family) she notes that the parents of "Jane Lew" George were Frederick and Ann. ???? There was a Frederick STORTS who died in 1783 in Bedford / Fulton Co. PA who was a Lt. in the PA militia during the war. He appears to not have had children but had a stepson Peter Swartzwelder (sp??) who married Mary STORTS. In Frederick's will he leaves items to his nephew George STORTS and niece Charlotte, children of an unnamed brother. I'm only guessing that George may have died in the war. If this Frederick STORTS was the brother then it makes since that he would leave something to his brother's children for whom he may have served as a guardian. I started a STORTS DNA Project but so far only two STAATS cousins have found each other and did not show a connection to the STEORTS / STORTS family. The tombstone of Eunice Bailey Stalnaker Steorts in Broad Run Cemetery says STEORTS one of two surviving sons who went to Missouri in the 1850s used STORTS. So many questions!! Any help appreciated. 3. I have German roots and am wondering if you've seen the name with an umlaut over the O (the two dots)? If so, when they Americanized the name they took away the two dots and added an E after the O. So it would be spelled Stoerts. Another spelling for you to check! 3. This is an excerpt from the following: http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~kyfloyd/Mis_files/penion_james_fraley.htm NATIONAL ARCHIVES, REVOLUTIONARY WAR PENSION APPLICATIONS; RECORD 3736 JAMES FRALEY STATE OF KENTUCKY COUNTY OF FLOYD On this day of June 1834 personally appeared before the undersigned one of the Commonwealth, Justice of the Peace, for said County, James Fraley, resident of Lawrence County, Kentucky. Aged 75 years of age who being first duly sworn according to law doth on his oath make the following declaration in order to obtain the benefit of the Act of Congress passed June 7, 1832. That he entered the service of the United States and served under the following named officers; Colonel William Camel, Captain Snody, for 9 months as an Indian Spy in the County of Washington, and the State of Virginia then was the 3rd of March 1779. His employment was as a Scout and Spy. He served with no Continental Officers of Militia Regiment during the period of his tour, and traveled and spied during that year on the frontier of the state bordering on the Clinch River Settlement in the County of Washington. The Spies did not go all together, by twos and by fours, chiefly by two. He marched and spied during the months of April, May, and June, not far from the fort on the Clinch River known by Moores Fort situated about a mile from the Clinch River. In this fort there was constantly about 20 or 25 men besides the Spies. The indians were not so troublesome in the immediate vicinity of Moores Fort, but they were more troublesome lower down on Clinch and Powell's Valley. In August the Wyandots from the north appeared in our vicinity. When out he saw indian sign, 3 persons only were killed in his neighborhood. To wit John English's wife, Molly and two of her little boys. The Indians retreated down Sandy and they were pursued by the Spies as well as the others who remained in the Fort to guard it. They were unable to overtake the Indians. They had stole some horses. These are the particular circumstances that I now recollect of. The Spies had particular sections allotted to them, where the war parties of the indian sign passed, and some time we would not return unless indian sign was seen, for a month. That in August and September the indians were always most troublesome in stealing, murdering, and burning. The Spies before had a running fight with the indians and they retreated. This was with the lower squads. He received his discharge sometime about the 10th of December, 1779 for 9 months served, he thinks it was a kind of recommendation and stated his service to get his pay. He has never seen it since. The man who spied with him this year was Lazarus Damron. In April, the date has escaped him, 1780 he enlisted for one year in the County of Washington and state of Virginia as an indian spy under Colonel Camel, Captain Snody again, and Lieutenant Cowan to spy in the same section. The Spies were to be recollected to find themselves. They lived on venison and bear meat. Early in June the indians made their appearance in his quarter of Washington County. They first stole two girls, to wit, Ann and Mary Bush, and made off for Canada. They succeeded in getting down on the waters of Sandy with them as far as Jurney's Creek in Floyd County, about 12 miles from the court house.

    3. Paul, This is just a one day trip and no one stays overnight. We leave from behind the Clarksburg Library at 5:00 a.m. Stop over in Maryland for breakfast and get in DC about 10:00 a.m. Stops are made at the DAR, Archives and the Library of Congress. You are free to do and go whatever/wherever you want until 5:00 P.M. when the bus leaves at the Archives. It is each person's responsibility to be at the Archives at 5:00. Stop for supper/dinner on the way home and get back into Clarksburg about 1:00 A.M. The last two times the trip has been taken they did keep the bus for some to do sight seeing. Hope this has been an answer to your question.
