The HARRISON COUNTY GENEALOGICAL SOCIETY Web Site has been updated with Ruby's notes and the Birthday Boy's pictures for September 11, 2010. Membership pictures also updated. Web Master Dick http://www.wvhcgs.com
The Harrison County Genealogical Society held their regular monthly meeting this date with seven members in attendance. We had one of our new members, John Carney, in attendance and it is always good to meet our out of town members. Due to the absence of the President, Ted Wolfe, Diana Johnson, Vice President conducted the meeting. She is very efficient as she had an itinerary printed out for each one of us. Due to the absence of the treasurer, David, read both the minutes and the treasurer's report. David had gotten several books since last meeting and I did not get the names of all of them, but here are a few; Mining Disasters 1830-2000; Life at Lynchburg by Paul E. Maxwell; Index to Westmoreland County, Pa. wills 1773-1896 and the Yesteryear books by Bill Adler of Lewis County, WV for years 1986, 1987, 1988, 1989, 1990 and 1991. The September newsletter was printed and after the meeting we all stayed and got it ready to mail. Our little 5 year old Jacob was a great help in taking them to the next person for labels. Thanks Jacob. We told the new member John about our scholarship fund and that we present two $500.00 scholarships each year to a graduating senior. We also had a discussion on our picnic last month and even though it was hot everyone had a good time and plenty of food. The trip to Washington, DC was discussed and anyone that is planning on going needs to contact David and give him your phone number and assurance you are going. The DAR was meeting downstairs and David told them he needs to have a total number going by next Saturday. He will make plans for a pickup coming back home to be made at Constitutional Hall instead of making them walk back to the Archives, as that would be a long walk for many of them. [email protected] The Pedigree charts was discussed and Ethel has the indexing up to date and if you have not sent yours in yet and want to , please send them to Diana asap as she would like to have them in by the end of December. She wants to have them ready for printing by April 2011. [email protected] We had a discussion on our Christmas dinner and no plans have been made yet and we named several restaurants that we can have it: Parkette, FOP in Nutter Fort, Raymon's, Ryan's, Village Square, Applebees and EatNPark. What day would you like to have it and give us some idea of which restaurant you would like. We need this info by the October meeting. I volunteered to take care of this but I will need a response from you if you plan on [email protected] We also discussed a place for our annual picnic next year. Watter's Smith Park and the new picnic grounds at the 4-H Center was named. Diana Johnson is going to take care of this. We also need to know which place you would rather go or if you have someplace in mind. [email protected] One thing we didn't mention was if we were going to work the Apple Butter Festival in Salem this year. Today was David's birthday so we had a birthday cake for him and hope he has had a very nice birthday. Once again thanks for all who helped get the newsletter ready for mailing. Our first order of business tomorrow is our State Regent is going to install our new officers she has to go to Morgantown after that. Maybe we could come up after our meeting or we could be called and take a short adjournment and come up. David, I will try to get that list for you and others. I'm going up to Clarksburg tomorrow. I will be stopping along the way in Weston and Buckannon to check out some family cemeteries. They are having a Pig Roast this Sunday at St. Bernard's church in Loveberry . I have never been to this outing. It's my understanding this is the 100th year for this outing. I found a man by the name of Luke White who going to let be borrow his records of the McDermott cemetery, it is located in Upshur Co. I'm sure I will run into some of my ( DOTS as I call them ) .I will spend some time at these cemeteries the other one is located in Heater W.Va., it is called Little Kanawha Memorial Gardens, a man by the name of Terry Crislit is going to meet me there and once again give me some old records of St. Michael's cemetery which has been relocated to this site. Must get back in Clarksburg tomorrow night to watch the WVU game. Mary what is your great grandmothers name and her dates would be helpful as well. The more information you can give on a person the better someone else can help. Mary, I Googled "R.L. Cunningham, undertaker" & got the pension records of a WV Union veteran named John Mort who died in 1905. The widow's residence was Fairmont and the P.O. was listed as Palatine, Marion Co. The subject was his undertaker. My experience with birth and death records in Marion Co. has been very good as far as access and ease of seeing them, but I did all of that in person. Since I got all I needed/wanted while I was there, I have not tried to access them online. God Bless the USA! Congratulations on your wonderful find! My great-grandmother, Concetta Pellegrini, died in 1920 and R.L. Cunningham was listed on her death record also. Concetta lived in Monongah and her funeral was probably held in the Italian church in Monongah but she was buried in Holy Cross Cemetery in Fairmont.
